Agree, however the airline think otherwise and have downgraded people before and IMO found it reasonable to do so. Further I suspect that the other carrier option comes a distant last behind the downgrade from the airline's POV
Yeah, the airlines definitely consider it reasonable. I'm fairly sure AJ would consider it perfectly reasonable to cancel the flight and not refund anyone.
Maybe one day we'll have some passenger protections/actual penalties for airlines like the EU.
 
Why does QF have so many broken J seats on their 787s? The only other airline I could find googling with multiple J seats broken on their 787s was Air India.
But there the regulator will not let them sell a broken seat.

There were a couple of reports of United having unserviceable J seats on their 787s but if it was a widespread problem you would expect many more reports in view of them being a US airline.

There was an article on broken J seats on BA's A380s but it also mentioned Qantas having the same problems.

But personal experience with one of the QF 717s flying into MCY. The window shade at 6A has an automatic shutting mechanism. looked up my flights and we reported it 5 years ago. But same plane last Sunday night and the same seat with the window shade still coming down at 6A.
 
In my time as a P1 I have been called to the service desk more times to be asked if I am willing to be moved to accommodate seat moves what I assume was last minute upgrades to let people sit together. I would suggest that 99% of the time I have just agreed and it was not like that the lounge agent was asking me to shift from 1C to 3F it was more like 1C or D to 1 A or F. Similar in Y usually ask would I switch from the C side to D side in R4. Internationally I have been asked would I trade seats and again often the answer was yes. There has been times when I had a shadow that disappeared but when boarding there was no one next to me and the other side was full, I didn't ask for this to happen and can only assume the bot or manual intervention made this happen.
This is the way this should be handled though. Interestingly I've NEVER been paged and asked for any move. Sometimes the pax themselves on board, and sometimes I notice an obvious pair of companions (ie couple) seated apart and offer myself if it suits, but I can't remember being paged and asked.. but if staff are going to aim to move people around to try and make nie, then asking up front is appropriate.

I was more discussing the situation that some seem to allege is a thing of uber entitled P1's (or CL) who ask to be in a specific seat even if it is taken - and I was just commenting I was never aware of such a thing in my experience.. and that most P1's I know (like you :) ) wouldn't be the type to do that.

I have no problem with being asked to help out on a flight - but that's the key there - being asked rather than it just happening either due to an agent deciding for me (like "oh he's a solo P1 we can move him so that couple can sit together") or, worse imo, someone demanding pax to be moved out of a preallocated seat to suit themselves.

Can it happen? sure. Has it probably happened? sure.. but hopefully very rarely.

I just feel some may have a perception that self entitlement comes with P1 status... perhaps to some, but imo not to any I know.

Probably because the fleet is so stretched there isn't time for maintenance for fixing stuff like this.

I guess my comment was a bit broad brush, sorry, and I probably might have said CLs rather than P1s.

But I've recounted my anecdote before, and the prominent sports administrator in question was then identified by others here as ALSO occupying their assigned seat 1A and the AFFer being bumped. I think before P1 was invented, and I'd think unquestionably CL.

Now, it would certainly take some effrontery for anyone to ask on-check-in "I've been busy; can I have my usual 1A, please? (unspoken - No matter whose there already)". More likely to have been requested by PA or offered by Qantas and the CL bod maybe unaware that the earth is shifting around them.

<<Aside. I used to work with a very well known Aust sports star/Australian captain. Lovely, unassuming bloke. Doors opened for him, CEOs cleared their schedule to have lunch or arrange meetings with exec staff, the PM invited him to dinner etc etc. As I said, lovely bloke, but I'm sure he never realised all the activity going on around him for his benefit because it was 'normal'. Always getting preferred seat on a plane, arranged by someone, may not be noticed as out of the ordinary with some CL types, I guess.>>

It seems to be a part of QF's wider maintenance problem with its widebody fleet. Perhaps closing their own maintenance facilities, cutting the engineering workforce to the bone and continuing to draw down the inventory of spare parts wasn't such a good idea after all.

If they are now having to hold multiple J seats on long-haul flights, they're creating a not insignificant revenue problem for themselves.
 
For QF, I am not surprised you mentioned it.
I wanted a window seat, AKL - BNE, always have window in my profile.
Even when I made the booking.
In my case, just because I was in AKL and too slow to do OLCI, after it opened, even by about 15/20 mins, my window seat disappeared, and I got an aisle in the middle instead, it was an A330, so even in the middle, wasn't an end, but still, I did not agree to be moved.
QF does not care, its in the terms, that seats are not guaranteed, and can be changed for operational and safety reasons.
Meanwhile flying KLM J last year, my flights got cancelled and rebooked several times (including aircraft swaps). Despite all of this, I remained in my initially chosen seat (1A) which by the way is the best on any aircraft!

Very subject comment regarding 1A and not always the case imo, but I'll let others comment further should they wish :)

At least there is a 1A on most aircraft, which helps when there is an aircraft change.
Like the Asian airlines who tend to start J at say row 11, even if it is the top cabin on the aircraft (but that does make some sense actually when it does come to swaps.. sometimes) or an airline like AA, when some aircraft would have F start at Row 1, and others at Row 3. I recall a flight a few years ago on a 737-800 from ATL-MIA where I'd selected row 3 (totally forgetting about this thing) to avoid the bulkhead.. there was a plane swap at some point that I didn't notice and voila.. I woumd up in the bulkhead. lol
 
Out of curiosity, given that the J seats are apparently the same on the A330's as on the 789's, has anyone noticed any similar occurrences on the A330's? I myself have not noticed any signs of such a thing over the last 12 months.

On the outside they might look the same, but the internals are different with the 787. They have less and different parts to make it lighter.

An opinion delivered as an absolute. :rolleyes: .

I never choose 1A (or any row 1, or 2, given the choice) for international flights as 1) Very commonly close to the galley and toilets and 2) Ditto to the bassinets , both inviting noise. Even on Australian domestic B737s I choose row 2C as first choice, the seat is wider than row 1 plus easier access to the aisle.

Does this abundance of broken seats explain why the mini cabin is blocked for seat selection on A380 flights atm? I was surprised I could get a seat there, but the rest of J was wide open.
Unlikely. It’s otherwise known as ‘Emerald City’… I don’t think you can select seats here in advance of T-80 unless you are WP or higher
