A couple of questions from an AAdvantage newbie

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I have just put a SYD-NRT JL J *2 On Hold, using my 90K miles purchased last year. Now this is the first time I used AA miles for redemption, but US call centre said that they cannot use my Aussie Visa card for ticketing, but instead put the seats On Hold and I need to call 07-33296060 (Australian number) to get it ticketed? Would I need to pay another fee as they are charging me $79+25=$104USD per person on tax. Would Australian call centre charge me additional money for getting it ticketed in Australia centre?

Yes. You will get charged an additional AUD80 for the privilege of using the Australian (actually Fijian, I think) call centre. I've had success in calling back AA in the US and just providing the credit card details. I seem to recall success with suggesting they out a leading zero on the post code.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

You can try online payment (if that choice shows up in your account). Otherwise keep trying calls to the US office. It seems quite random as to whether or not staff can process Australian cards but I did ask for a supervisor (in the US) to process charges for my last award and still got hit with an $80 fee. I phoned back and no other staff member had ever heard of this charge but I have had no luck in getting a refund.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Just give them your postcode with a leading 0 and it will process fine. Don't even tell them that it is an Australian credit card. eg my postcode is 7005 so I told them 07005 and they said some US city and I just said yes that is fine and the payment worked perfectly.

The US call centre is open 24 hours a day so can call anytime.

Dale.

Thank you. I will try to call them later tonight with this trick.

By adding a zero to the post code the result needs to be valid US post code for this to work.

If so, why not remember and use one post code that is familiar to you.

For example, 90001 for Los Angeles

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I managed to pay online just fine with my Aussie credit card. Can't remember if I did anything special with the postcode or not. May have put a 0.

Me too, and I have a PO Box as my billing address which I used with no problems.

I've now completed my 12 AA flights (and back in Australia) and no problems at all.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

OK, I have my flights ticketed using my Australian credit card via US call centre wiht zip code somewhere in Boston (added 0 to my post code). However, I noticed that AA charged me 50USD per person for Telephone ticketing service fee. I always thought it is 25USD per person.

American Airlines | Customer Service | AA.com Australia

I am missing something or I should call AA again to get the extra service fees refunded?

I've previously paid US$60 so would've been less upset with US$50.

I paid for my recent trips on the internet with no booking fee.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I read the first couple of pages but couldn't find an answer.

Would I be correct in assuming I can book a PER-SYD-LAX-MIA in Business for 125,000 AA Miles Return?

Yes, can stopover at LAX on both entry and exit

Might have to buy some miles and give it a go then. I was afraid PER-MEL/SYD would be counted as a separate award flight and LAX-MIA would be another.

At 125,000 miles it's actually pretty good value. Now just have to find the optimum time/price at which to buy AA ,miles.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

No its zone based, so anywhere in Oz to anywhere in the North America for those miles... Only problems is if you don't fly transpac direct and go via Asia then they start splitting it up into two awards South Pacific-Asia and Asia-North America....

Your only problem now will be getting those 125,000 miles in any quick way as even the best offers (tending to be near the start or the finish of the year) are 60,000 + 30,000 bonus (a 50% buy promo) and that is your annual limit of 60,000 miles purchased reached... You might be able to wait until the next one of those 50% bonus offers comes along and you buy one set of miles for one flight and get someone else to buy a set of miles and book your return, although often the intervening offers are only something like 40,000 + 15,000 which won't even get you your one way flight...

There is also an offer for swapping some points via hotels isn't there...

If I have two accounts, say one for me and one for Mrs Rok then technically couldn't I buy 60,000 + 30,000 bonus in my account which is 90,000, then from her account buy say 25,000 + 50% bonus = 37,500 and then share her miles with me?

I know there is a limit on buying/gifting miles of 60,000 per year, but is there a limit on sharing miles? Couldn't I share her miles with me?

It's pretty expensive to share miles.
It would be much better to buy miles in each of your accounts and get Mrs Rok to book the return trip in your name.

I will have plenty of time to plan and book this particular trip and need to get it right. Ill be using QF miles to book one of us and AA to ooh the other but I see what your saying, get my return ticket booked from Mrs Rok's account using her miles. Good think bat woman…
