A couple of questions from an AAdvantage newbie

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

With the eight SWUs afforded to Platinums, presumably there needs to be availability in a particular fare bucket in order to execute. What is the fare bucket that needs to be available in First in order to use a SWU?

No, read the link in it ...

Sorry, on small device now so can't be more specific (although it's C for economy to business upgrade).

DoH! It's A for first, much easier to get than C ...

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Does anyone know the re-ticketing rules for award tickets?
Hypothetically: I book an award ticket on Jan 1, 2013 for travel in September 2013. I then ring up in August 2013 to change the flights for travel in May 2014. The new ticket but same PNR shows as being ticketed successfully in August 2013. What is the furthest date that I can make any subsequent changes to travel?

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I would refer to industry standard and that would be 330 days (being SABRE) after 1 year after the original ticketing date.

In that example it would be sometime late November 2014.

I have come across a few reports of extensions beyong that 23 months but that would be more like something slipping through the cracks (agent not undertaking due diligence) rather than something to be relied upon.

AA in my experience allows you to retool up to one year from original ticketing date, not travel.

I ended having to pay redeposit fees

Further to this issue, could you cancel an AAward flight and get your miles / fees back (like MASA) ?

Thanks in advance

The ticket is valid for 12 months from the original date of issue. You can make date/time changes as often as you like, so long as the Origin/Destination remains the same. This includes re-routing via different intermediate points and can also include change of class. Obviously the miles required and any taxes will be re-evaluated each time you make a change and the miles/taxes costs at the time the change is made will apply. Any reduction in taxes as a result of the change will be refunded.

The furthest out you make any booking is 330 days from the booking date, but it must be within 12 months of the original issue date of the award.

If you want to change the origin/destination ports or to cancel the reservation, there is a fee of US$150 to have the miles reinstated to your account (this fee is not charged to EXP members). This includes any miles difference if changing the booking to a lower cabin/class.

Thanks, so how does that fit in line with serfty's post #648 with the 1 year + 330 day rule?

FWIW I have recently been successful in changing dates for both award and revenue tickets beyond 1 year from ticketing. It's taken a few rounds of the good ol' HUACA though... baffling as to why some agents can do it with no problem and others strictly adhere to the 1 year deadline.

Oh, for the person asking about mileage reinstatement fees and details, the link for more info is here:

Thanks, so how does that fit in line with serfty's post #648 with the 1 year + 330 day rule?
All I have to go by is my own personal experience. I had an AAdvantage award booked for my son and his plans changed and he needed to travel about 2 months earlier than the original date. So rather then cancel the ticket and pay the US$150 to have the miles returned to my account, I chose to just push out the date in the hope that perhaps maybe I might possible achieve the impossible and make EXP and then the fee would be waived (didn't happen). I was told at the time that I could push out the date to 12 months from the original ticket date.

Now this may be slightly different for different types of tickets. My example was a one-way ticket. Its possible that for a return ticket the return leg may be able to be pushed out to 330 days beyond 12 months from initial ticket issue.

Fare rules can change the defaults - it was those I was indicating - if an AAward may only be changed to a date up to one year from original ticketing, then so be it.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I have an F award on a CX 744 (HKG-SFO) for late September, shortly before CX stop their US 747 services in October and replace them with 777s (some 3 class configs without F cabins, but a lot still have an F service).
It is the one mentioned in this thread:

http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ntage/150-change-fee-when-changing-55311.html

Prior to this afternoon, it was HKG-SFO-LAX-SAN with the dom sectors on AA. F all the way through.
I get an email saying I need to contact AA because there has been a change in my booking.

Turns out the CX 747 service is being cut short earlier than planned and my flight is now operated by a 777 with no F cabin.
I ring up and talk about the alternatives, there is a HKG-LAX with an F cabin at a comparable time that gives me plenty of time to connect to the same LAX-SAN leg.

The problem is that it cannot be ticketed over the phone because travel does not originate in the US. Huh?!!!!

I get told I need to ring the HK desk and I have 7 days to do it (the new itinerary has been held but not ticketed).
I tell them that the original ticket and subsequent change was all done over the phone (had to be due to CX not being available online).
Funnily enough, I checked BA.com prior to calling and could not find any F availability on that day on any route.

Has anyone experienced this before??? I'll ring in 3-4 days when it is not as busy - with the HUACA method at my disposal.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Friends

Recently I picked up AA Plat from the challenge (costing some $$ with the registration fee).

I am thinking of using this new status to apply for a status match with Aerolineas (SkyTeam) which does not recognise my QF WP application, but does accept AA Plat / EXP.

One of their requirements is a copy of the AA card "which shows the Platinum status".

Q is therefore: would AA send me any card showing the Plat status after the challenge ?

Thanks

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

They do send a card after the status change but usually a while before it arrives in Australia.often several weeks.
Should have an email confirming your plat status.

When you log into your account you can print a copy of your current card which will show your platinum status - should do fine for faxing/email.
