A couple of questions from an AAdvantage newbie

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

Are you aware that travelling to the US via HKG means you have to have 2 awards as transit through HKG is not allowed.
You will love CX J though.
You may get a brief window of opportunity when AA's own route of LAX-SYD comes online to book that routing as AA is very stingy with saver awards on their own metal.
Dale.

Or simply slum it to BKK/SIN/DPS/HKG with cash and use the (single) AA award to get to the USA from there.

I did the same trick with LM a couple of times, cheapy cash flight to go to Jakarta and Sin to start a few very cheap tricked city routes....

And for just a few dollars more (12,000 points) you can fly CX F for the trans-pac. It's probably one of the cheapest and best use of points.

If you can find availability... from my own searching and from reading reports, CX F availability is becoming harder and harder to find.

Likely true, but if you really want F, book J and start checking about two weeks before the flight for F availability. The upgrade with AA only costs the additional miles. And CX seems to offer seats close in if not sold.

Currently on hold to AA trying to process payment on an award booking with my Australia Citibank card however it's not going through, any tips?

Thinking I just put it on hold and try again? I've used the same card in the past no problem...

It's something about zip codes, they need to either omit it altogether or add a zero at the end or something like that. Or ring the Fiji call centre and they will process it for you but might want to try charging you $80 service fee, to which you tell them that they should know the rule that if a booking can't be done online no fee is charged and they will waive it

After about 20 minutes on hold the agent came back and said all good. No explanation but not too concerned.

Booked SGN-KUL-MEL on MH J for this Saturday.

Cathay is a class product and is great for flying out of Perth. The loss of seat availability will be a great loss to the AA programme in my opinion.

I had the opportunity to check out the up graded The Pier lounge which is now a first class only lounge. It has just re opened and in the 5 hours connection at HK airport, the lounge was virtually deserted.
It has all the service, facilities and décor that you would expect and the head, neck, shoulders and feet massage was much appreciated after a long US flight. One of the best lounges I have experienced.

...

While I agree on the first sentence, if CX limits F class availability, flights to/from Australia have no issues at the moment. There are no F seats.

My understanding is that Cathay intend to limit F class availability everywhere for partners. Whilst this does not effect to/from Australia, from Hong Kong Cathay provide F to many destinations and has had reasonable J class availability to HK from Perth.
There are no F class anywhere out of Perth, but J to HK is both convenient and comfortable. AND then there are the Cathay lounges.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

There's been speculation for a while that CX F will go in the way of LH F.. limited (or even no) partner availability. (ie LX F)
Doesn't help that the 747s with the larger F cabins have been retired...

Asia miles remains a viable option for Aussies so all is not lost.

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

How do you go about transferring miles?

In my case Westpac Altitude & Citi Prestige both allow for that option.

Booked CDG SYD (CX J) once within 7 days of departure - so pleasurable !

I think Citi Sig and AmEx Plat Edge also transfer to AsiaMiles. If all fails, there is always SPG :-)

Re: Couple of AAdvantage questions from a newbie to it

I'm sure Citi Sig does not; Plat Edge does.

Yep you're right; I just checked, Citi Sig does not but Plat Edge does. Citi Sig does not transfer to SPG either :-( On the other hand, I am mostly interested in Velocity and KrisFlyer anyway (well, and AA).
