Abbott in Government

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

So how else would she attain the leadership of the party? Nobody willingly gives up the prime ministership. If somebody had had the guts to take on Howard in the dying days of his reign the Liberals might have gotten another term.

I reckon sexism is still rearing its ugly head regarding how Julia Gillard attained the prime ministership.

It takes us back to the old days when women were expected to know their place and not interfere with men's business. You only have to look at how the incumbent prime minister was referred to by Tony Abbott. When Julia Gillard was the incumbent he always referred to her by her first name.

When Kevin Rudd resumed the role it was Mr Rudd or the prime minister. Nor was Kevin Rudd anymore respectful towards Julia Gillard.

Still things are back to normal now, a man is in charge and the girlies are banished for a few more years. How sad that Australia is missing out on different ideas and ways of doing things.

What different ideas to Julia Gillard bring to politics? She lied, manipulated and backstabbed her way to the top. Just another example of a typical politician from either side really.

if she is unfit to do her job 100% effectively it is little more than pointless cost cutting for political gain. She needs to move past cheap political point scoring and realise that she now has a job to do for all Australians.

Oh but nice little pre-election murdoch attack story that says nothing about costs.

The government has come in with a mandate to end the waste of the past six years. This is one way of doing it. Sure, a few thousand dollars here and there might not seem like much initially. But even from this trip, the savings from flying Business Class vs. First Class, and staying in a hotel room at a third of the cost, will add up to the tens of thousands, and possibly over $100k. If multiplied across all government trips, this will make a huge dent in paying down debt and balancing the budget again. Over time, it will pay the salaries of tens if not hundreds of construction workers as part of building the new infrastructure Australia needs.

Families balance the books. Most businesses balance the books. It's about time government does the same, and I applaud Julie Bishop in leading by example.

They also have a mandate to DO THE JOB they were elected to do to the best of their ability. They are not going to save $100k of bishops hotel room, which is the only expense I have mentioned. If she is incapable of doing her job on behalf of the tax payers then it is a false economy.

As for your balancing the books comments. I'm glad you mentioned that, because besides balancing the books. Most families living in their own house run debt. Those households sure don't balance the books in the year/s they incur that debt. For example I'm running debt at 200% of household income. Companies, business, also run debt and have a target debt range. By those standards it is perfectly reasonable for governments to run debt, very low debt by comparison in fact.

I always have to laugh at people holding up households and businesses as gold standards who don't understand that debt is not bad. It's like they are economically illiterate.

This is just a silly discussion now. The electorate will decide if they do the job, just as it decided that labor didn't.

As far as debt goes, there is debt needed to build infrastructure and build an economy and then there is debt simply to pay the rent. To say that living on debt is a good thing is just simplistic. And if you are a company and you are doing the latter, then the annual returns you are required to sign each year means that you are committing corporate fraud.

What is being discussed is how they do the job, not if they do the job.

I did not say debt is good and I did not say anything about trading while insolvent or committing fraud. If my post is silly then you misrepresentation of it is even sillier.

The Government didn't come in with any kind of mandate - 55% of Australians voted for someone else.

If they were able to attempt any mandate, it would simply to be "not Labor", as the substantial shift of votes away from the major parties - especially in the Senate - shows.

Families balance the books. Most businesses balance the books. It's about time government does the same, and I applaud Julie Bishop in leading by example.
Would you define any family or business in debt as not "balancing the books" ?

No ABC rubbish please. Myself and Tony can think for ourselves.

That's debatable since you clearly don't even understand my point. The point has nothing to do with the ABC, just the situation of the bloke in the story. (like the news paper story that required reading 3 words, you only have to watch the first bit to find out about his bio) You liberals think it's just a matter of hard work. If you have any courage to your conviction do you have the courage to find out about a bloke in a rubbish situation and then tell me how he can escape by working hard. (I doubt it)

Good to see a nice civilised discussion on politics.

Not! There is a lot of similarity in these political threads to discussions between one-eyed Liverpool fans and one-eyed Manchester United fans.
