Advice on champagne

My favourite NV is Billecart-Salmon but at the prices above I'd get the Taittinger.
Feels like I'm in the SYD F Lounge every time I open a bottle ;)
I'm a convert - must have nearly consumed 1½ bottles ...
There's about hour of sips in a glass - only on my 4th as taking it easy as I have a 12+ hours flight coming up (hopefully) in front row Business.

Enough on the pallate to get by in small dosages.

"2000 Billecart-Salmon "Cuvée Nicolas François Billecart" Brut Champagne"

$100 bucks a bottle - not too shabby for that price...

Hopefully this is the right thread for this.
I am after some champagnes to try out in the 50-100$ range. I know this is probably sacrilege given some precious responses in this thread, but i am rather a fan of mumm. Any recommendations you might have would be most appreciated.

You should find a wide selection of NV (non-vintage) in that price range:
- Taittinger brut reserve NV
- Billecart-Salmon brut reserve NV
- Veuve Clicquot NV
- Moët & Chandon NV
- Louis Roederer NV
- Bollinger NV
- Charles Heidsieck NV
- Lanson Black Label NV
- Perrier-Jouët NV
- Pommery NV

Once you've tried all those, do return with tasting notes if you are still able to operate a keyboard ;)

Thanks! have tried various types of moët, never been a huge fan.

Will start working my way down that list! Thanks.

I agree with you on the Moët... Although some of the vintages like the 2002 are pretty good but pricey. That money is best spent elsewhere IMO.

Decisions decisions - intend to use 4 x $50 Coles Myer cards less 4 x $20 credits courtesy recent LL promo at First Choice tomorrow - they will price match Dan's.

So 6bot buy equats to eff disc $13/bot - gotta decide between:

Am leaning Bolly direction - your thoughts?

DM's seemed to have some sort of error going on, got the Bolly for $48.55 per bottle (single bottle price) through Click and Collect. :D

Yes its a good idea to have some cheap bubbles available for a quiet Monday night tipple... sadly my career only allows for champagne a few times a week...

:( I went to Aldi (in a southern CBR suburb) to pick up some Mumm... but they had none. I don't know if that's because it had all been sold... or because they guessed that no-one in the neighbourhood quaffed French bubbly. So I called into Costco on the way home and found the Mumm Cordon Rouge Brut with 2 champagne flutes for $39.59. I bought a couple and was thinking I should go back for more. Beats Aldi's dozen price by about $65.

Well done pw - big tick and elephant stamp for you!

So if you bought a dozen you'd have 2 dozen flutes for the party. Now all you need to let us know is where and when? :)

pw I have not set foot in Cosco since it first opened in Melbourne - what kind of range of Champers and what prices did you notice?

Well... There were all sorts of familiar brands, some under lock and key but most out for the rest of us. I can't remember the prices of the other ones, but there was a home brand (Kirkland) variety that I think was cheaper than the Mumm. The only down side of Costco is that you have to fork out $60 to join them... so add that to the price of your one bottle of bubbly and it spoils the economics a fair bit.

OK so BWS currently running promo Mumm and Lanson Black Label - any 2 for $80 - does not have to be 1 of ea if add reads correctly - can be 2 x Mumm:

And here is Dan's current price Mumm:

Dans Mumm.JPG

So if I use Wish Card to pay Dan's price matched BWS price should give you Mumm at about $37.75bott. Am off to Cosco morrow to do price recon and Cruiserette wants to pick up a doz of the Mumm gift packs with 2 x flutes if still there at the $39.59 price that the pug posted - she will use them for bday gifts throughout year - great time and worry saver.

Am planning to join sometime soon; it's $55 for abn holders.

Looks like the Bolly was popular at $48, can't find a single Dans store with any left in stock. The do have Moët for $44 at the moment which isn't bad. Veuve at $52 as well.

Stock up in OOL. From memory moet is around the $45, veuve and Bolly @ $50

Well that was a fruitless venture - no stock of Mumm gift packs. Cruiserette says she had 2 visits to Costco in one day - her FIRST and her LAST - and she chewed my ear all the way cause she was unable to secure the Mumm gift packs. Staff did check stock situation for me - YES they will be getting more stock in - NO they do not know when - need to call them first on 03 8602 0300 and they will confirm - better than wasting a trip.

Some comparisons I noted in Costco this morn:

Veuve - Costco $52.69 / Dan's $52.75

Moet - Costco $42.38 / Dan's $44.85

Lanson - Costco $39.39 / Dan's $39.85

Dom 2004 - Costco $187.99 / Dan's $199.95

That was about extent of Costco champagnes - they do also normally range Mumm but no stock today.
