interesting - not that much cheaper really?

how bout the vintage?

The prestige cuvees are generally better priced. Got Cuvee Louise 1999 for EUR90 at a place opposite the Cathedral in Reims.

Also the real bargains are to be had with the smaller lesser known producers. EUR22 for Cuvee Sienna by Bertrand Devavry as opposed to over $100 here.

Don't forget to do a champagne degustation at Au36 on rue Dom Perignon. They usually have some amazing drops from grower/producers. You can also buy champagne there for cellar door pricing.

Keith or anybody else happen to ship a couple of doz from various houses back home? Complicated?

We enquired at the small producers we visited but none of them had an established process and you also had to pay ~EUR200 in postage for a case. Mine you these are tiny, family-run places. The bigger houses may have a better system. We simply drank all our purchases prior to flying home.

Hmmmm ................ interesting - I would not have prob with the freight - I would expense that without a prob - need to work on logistics here - would be wanting to send 4 doz or so back home - now that would be my ideal notion of 'souvenirs'!

I had to go for a walk for that. It's Sunday and a public holiday (Joan of Arc day) but found a bottle shop. We also had a great lunch

Veuve Clicquot 2004 56
Lanson 1999 56
Bollinger 2002 89

Hmmm...Pol Roger 2000...was that the Winston Churchill? Otherwise talk about a rip-off! In fact those prices are comparable to Australia for the most part.

Some more non vintage prices from one of the shops near the cathedral (could be Keith009's store)

EUR

Veuve Clicquot Brut 37.50
Pommery Cuvee 98
Taittinger Brut 36.50
Taittinger Cuvee 32
Taittinger Rose 43.50
Perrier Jouet 31
Bollinger Cuvee 36.90

We'll be in Istanbul in 6 weeks time. We were supposed to go last year then delayed when all the riots were happening. Spoke to someone who was there at the time and said it was fine and just to be watchful.

Nothing is putting us off going to Istanbul in July this year.

Shame we aren't visiting France this time. I know so much more about champagne after reading this thread. But still like my Moët despite the comments here. ;)

Me too - and that is all that counts - you are welcome to drop into our home anytime Pushka and we will enjoy a bottle together - and giggle at the same time at those were not invited to join us.

Thanks for the re-assurance on Istanbul - we are booked June 30 to July 7 - will still monitor situation over next couple weeks.
