Advice on champagne

In other news, our friend Mr Riedel advises that champagne flutes are passé and that champagne is best consumed from a wine glass. Old style champagne bowls (which I love based on the retro factor) also sub-optimal he says. Of course he has released an appropriate specimen which I'm yet to try. Apparently the science is around the nose of the wine being stifled by a small opening in a flute, and loss of aroma due to a large opening in the old style bowl or martini glass. Apparent this glass is just perfect for this, but for we kids playing at home, a standard white wine glass is apparently perfect.

I find the whole wine to glass pairing a little wanky TBH, but the science makes sense so seems a good excuse to open another Taittinger to test the theory! ;)

You are not kidding!!! Different glasses for different varietals is just a joke and designed to make people with more money than sense part with cash (in the case of Riedel, lots of cash).

Preaching to the converted here... already posted the picture of the champagne "wine tools" somewhere... but in case you missed it...

The caution made me laugh!

My Taittinger tasted great in the Champagne Wine Tool.. the nose was really emphasised :)
But yes... seriously wanky..

Oh I just stumbled upon the thread. Unfortunately sunny MEL not possible next week - far too busy and important (the latter may be a stretch...)

Interesting that the stated alcohol is 12.5% yet on the regular Taittinger and the World Cup one, it is listed as 12%

Interesting... Rounding error?

The reviews look like a copy-paste job, so it seems very likely to be Taittinger, but as always - no warranty or guarantee offered by me.

I'm hosting a Champagne blind tasting party in a couple of weeks time and I'm planning to be cheeky by sneaking in a blanc de blanc from oz or nz. What do you guys think?

I'm late responding but agree with the other posts here about a vintage Arras or Chandon. When we were in NZ we had some gorgeous blanc de blancs. Our favourite was No 1 Family Estate, the No 1 Cuvee. It is hard to find in Australia though.

The champagne masterclass at last year's Qantas wine show included the 2004 Arras.

This is fabulous. Mr AirKat has decided the world cup Taitt is better than regular NV (don't get me started). Hoping for world cup bottles!

The label looks better ;)

Although theoretically the same wine, it is likely the FIFA bottles are from an earlier disgorgement.

There is a lot of conjecture about ageing NV Champagnes, however some critics claim a year or two extra after disgorgement can improve things. Of course this could also be explained by the small variations between batches. Perhaps I should conduct some more research...

glug glug glug.
