I have been to many AFF related functions, but never yet a "gathering" so I have no intention of working at one!

penegal seemed to manage just fine this year ;)

Can I suggest the runner up location be the location for AFF Gathering #11 in 2017? :)

Way ahead of you... with such a tight contest I think that's a given! :)

I don't seem to be able to vote, however DRW would be good, I haven't been there.

You need to have a certain "minimum" number of posts to vote. It's probably 10, but could be 5.

There is a Hyatt in Perth which isn't going anywhere, so less of a consideration for me.

At least my accommodation would be sorted then!

Plenty were older than penegal though.
You just don't know what you are missing :D!

Are we still talking about work + gathering....or just drinks + gathering? (if it's the former, you can keep it, the later I can manage it ;))

I went for PER because of the proximity to Margaret River and the Swan Valley. This has nothing to do with wine ;)

If PER is successful, I would suggest a pre-do or post-do in Margaret River. It is far enough away (277km from Perth CBD to MR township) that you really need to go for a couple of days to make it worthwhile.

I have heard horror stories of day trips where the bus ride is double the time spent at wineries.

MR is huge, no chance to do it in one day.
Been there recently for three days and felt even that was not enough. Although going with bus means we could probably get up to 5 wineries per day so two days can work well.

I rarely visit every winery in a region when I visit (otherwise a visit would last weeks!). Hence I keep revisiting the same regions, but try to focus on different producers (and re-visit favourites).

For MR I find that a 2-3-4 day trip with a few wineries per day is a good formula. Anything more than 3 or 4 days is a bit of a marathon effort.

I recently went to the trouble of logging in and posting a considered answer to this thread, only to have it lost by the system - which claimed I wasn't logged in - when I tried to post it.

I am not prepared to re-write it, but perhaps a moderator could be so kind as to look into why this happened.

It does that from time to time if you don't check the box which says something like "keep me logged in". Quite annoying when it happens.

I am not sure why this happened, particularly as you were able to post the above. Perhaps your login timed out due to inactivity?

As swanning_it suggested it is important to tick that pesky little box. Once ticked you should never be logged out.

Yes, but he's younger than I and (it would appear) far more adept at getting out of bed the morning after!
I think you will find the participants of the bus trip from Alice Springs to Uluru last year will not agree with your assessment! :p

Definitely agree with having multiple days for MR. Even if we make it a 12-hour day trip, we would still spend more time on the bus than at the wineries. Failing that, a day trip to Swan Valley might work. And away from the alcohol, perhaps a day trip to Rottnest Island as well but we might need to book early if we want the bus tour (or something similar), otherwise we would need to rely on our own peddle power.
