AFF Gathering #4, Brisbane, October 22-24, 2010

Some great looking bars and restos listed there, but given I know nothing about Brisbane (only 1 brief visit so far), happy to go with the places suggested by the Organising Committee and Brisbane Insiders. ;)

Not too fussed RE other activities. Will turn up to as many as feasible, unless OMG o'clock wake up calls are required.

My +1 is now coming so I have to behave...unfortunately, we are on different QF flights back (1/2 hour apart) as I could not get the cheap fare on the same flight I booked a while back. We will almost certainly attend the formal dinners / lunches but will wait to see the final venues before confirming. I just saw the Hilton Brisbane had a prepay rate of $196 per night, and as I still have a "Member for Stay" card left which will bring it down to $157 per night, we might stay here:idea:.

I will not be attending as I will be attending a conference in Las Vegas then another 2 days after I get home in Sydney

Enjoy everyone

One of our regulars at Brisbane drinks night is MAX_1 who is a member of Brisbane Golf Club at Yerongpilly and it would appear that this would be our golf venue for Sunday morning 24 October 2010.

Approximate costs would be ~$70-$80 including golf game and a cart. Our projected tee-off time would be ~6:30-7:00am as we are looking at a ~4:30 round and really need to be out of there by ~11:00-11:30am to make way for the Sunday morning members comp and also to head off to Breakfast Creek for lunch.

One of the conditions of the proposed booking is that we know exactly how many people would be interested in playing golf on Sunday. Please post in this thread of your desire to play golf that weekend. Hackers and professionals are all welcome except if you are professional the bribe would need to be higher.

Personally if we can secure this game of golf would be fantastic at it is a private golf course (rated in the top 2 or 3 in Brisbane) and as MAX_1 is going away on a golf trip to Townsville (or is it Rockhampton) that weekend it makes it even harder.

Anyway I am excited and MAX_1 will hopefully post the positive details over the next few days....

Puts hand up!

Count me in for the Golf.

OK. So far we have a 3 ball for golf.

I got a call from MAX_1 earlier and all the signs are positive that we will be playing at Brisbane Golf Club and he is just trying to tie up some loose ends with the secretary of the golf club. Hit-off will be around 7:00am-7:30am as there is a social club hitting off at 6:30am.

Very nice. My cousin had her wedding reception there and I purchased my golf clubs from them as well. Great investment as I've scored a century every time I've used them.

Relax. The guys have done a great job and have got the schedule mapped out quite nicely. You will not be disappointed.

I believe Anat0l will be posting the update.

As long as its not a reprise of the Adelaide Ambush:!:

As long as its not a reprise of the Adelaide Ambush:!:
I can assure you that is not going to happen because the people organising this event are down to earth people and do not believe the world revolves around them.

The whole weekend has been mapped out a lot better than Ozfest at Adelaide, no prepayment required and you will enjoy the variety on offer.

And if for some reason you don't like what has been organised then you are more than welcome to visit me at the Mill for a drink or two and something to eat.

The Program

Here is the program as it stands. There may be intentions later to shift this program to a more convenient place, especially as it updates.

As usual, we are open to reasonable, open and honest debate about the options. At this moment, notwithstanding any operational or exceptional problems, we will be pursuing to organise these activities, liaise with companies, book tables, etc.

You can click on the locations to read more information at the relevant websites.

Here is a Google Map with all locations noted

Friday 22 October

Pre-Dinner Drinks 5.00 pm - 7.30 pm
Bar Soma

4/22 Constance St, Fortitude Valley, QLD 4006

Dinner 7.30 pm onwards
Oyama Japanese Restaurant
(no official website)
115 Wickham St, Fortitude Valley, QLD 4006

Here we will most likely enjoy a Teppanyaki dinner. For those not entirely willing to endure a show of flying food, a la carte should be able to be arranged. Vegetarians can be accommodated.

Exact menu to be advised.

Saturday 23 October

Day Activity 10.00 am - 3.00 pm
Koala and River Cruise by Mirimar Cruises

Cast off: Cultural Centre Pontoon, outside Queensland State Library

Cruise down the Brisbane River on the Mirimar II to Lone Pine Sanctuary to cuddle a koala. Family and kids friendly.

Itinerary
  • Boarding commences: 9.30 am
  • Cast off from Cultural Centre: 10.00 am
  • Arrive Lone Pine: 11.15 am
  • Depart Lone Pine: 1.45 pm (i.e. 2.5 hours at Lone Pine Sanctuary)
  • Arrive Cultural Centre: 3.00 pm

Cost: $55 / adult; $50 / concession (pensioner, senior, student); $33 / child (age 3 - 13)
Includes cruise ticket and entry to Lone Pine Sanctuary

Note that lunch is not included in the costs. There is reportedly a licensed restaurant on site. Other than that, any Brisbanites willing to bring a huge picnic basket of home made sandwiches for everyone? :p

Pre-Dinner Drinks 5.00 pm - 7.30 pm
The Groove Train

King George Square
100 Adelaide Street, Brisbane, QLD 4000

Dinner 7.30 pm onwards
Vapiano

Albert Lane, off the Queen Street Mall
191 Albert Street, Brisbane, QLD 4000

It's all Italian - order whatever you want. Split bills are very simple here thanks to their touch card billing system.

Sunday 24 October

Day Activity 6.30 am - 11.30 am
The AFF #4 Golf Challenge

The Brisbane Golf Club
Tennyson Memorial Avenue, Yeerongpilly, QLD 4105

Whether your blade of choice is pitch, iron or wood - or all of them - a call to the challenge is issued to you! Spectators, caddies or walking enthusiasts are welcome.

There will be a prize for the winner (prizes gratefully supplied by munitalP and Lindsay Wilson).

Organisation thanks to MAX_1 and JohnK.

Cost: $70 - $80 per player including golf game and cart
The cost might be less per person (do we all need one cart each?). Costs assumed exclusive of club hire (for those that may need it). I'm not sure of the costs for those not playing but on the course - it may just be the same cost as a player. Perhaps I might need to retract my statement of "spectators, caddies or walking enthusiasts are welcome".

Lunch 12.30 pm onwards
The Breakfast Creek Hotel

2 Kingsford Smith Drive, Albion, QLD 4010

In my opinion :) still one of the best places in Brisbane to get a great steak at a decent price.

Unfortunately for vegetarians, your options will be limited here (I saw a veggie stack on the menu... :-|)

Sounds good anat0l.

Count me in for Friday drinks and a probable for dinner.

Saturday (Lone Pine) I won't be able to attend, but having just been there ~3 weeks ago, I can answer some questions.

If using Miramar, check out this page. Other pages there for details on access by bus (which terminates at the Sanctuary) or car.

Yes, there is the Riverside Cafe on the LHS of the entrance, not sure whether it is licenced (walked past, didn't go there). Decent cafe menu with light meals, coffees, cakes etc.

Shows and activities timetable here and a map is supplied on entry. An absolute must is the 11:45 session "Bird of Prey Flight Show & Photos". I'd go straight there on arrival as seating is limited and the area closed when all seats taken. Lunch with the kangaroos and emu's on the hill was good, but watch out for excretement. My parents live nearby, but don't know if they will do sandwiches for all and deliver :o

I'm in for golf on Sunday - I love the course. Motorised buggies take 2 pax and their clubs. You may need to retract your statement, as non-players are not insured and therefore may not be allowed.

Thanks for the update Anat0l. Good variety there for everyone.

There may not be a problem if visitors come along. MAX_1 will update with some details down the track but I believe green fees are $50-$60 per person and carts are $20-$30 per cart which is the members price.

I do not know the rules of Brisbane Golf Club (if walkers are excluded) but it should be possible to pay for green fees for one person and hire a cart and have a visitor with you in that cart. I have done this at many golf courses in Australia.

P.S we have a 4 ball for the challenge now. Any other hackers want a game at a great golf course?

To the organisers.

This sounds like a great plan. Well done from me.

I can now confirm that I will be attending, though I'm not sure yet if that is a yes for one or two :!:
