Thats precisely the problem - as I said in a previous post, loose the cloak and dagger and get some transparency!

munitalP,

I find your comments rather harsh and totally unnecessary. If you do not like it then feel free to not attend.

ps that is the polite version :!:

The beauty of this forum Bill, is that we can speak our minds as you have just done.

PS and that too is the polite version

General thoughts..:
  • Why not have the dinner at Vapiano on the Saturday night, and find somewhere that will take a reservation for the Friday night? I can assure you that the chances of getting a table for ~20 people on a Friday night is non-existent if we just show up somewhere..
  • Teppanyaki sounds interesting; maybe that would make a good Friday night event? Could someone please confirm that vegetarians can be accommodated at the same table as meatatarians? If not, I'm personally happy to skip Friday night and catch up with folk for after-dinner drinks (but can't speak for other vego's, if any)
  • Another resto suggestion - Watt Modern Dining @ the Powerhouse. Accessible by City Cat, prices seem quite reasonable, location lends itself to pre and post drinkies etc..
  • Stradbroke/Moreton Bay etc. I have no personal interest in. Getting to Sirromet is a bit of a pain in the cough, but it could be fun all the same. If people want a river cruise, I know someone that could give us a reasonable price.
  • Drinking Saturday night and Golf on Sunday morning for those inclined and without hangovers (which definitely counts me out ), followed by a late lunch at the Brekkie Creek sounds very good
  • As for venues of liquid refreshment, I'm biased and will want to be somewhere with decent gin and maybe a nice coughtail list. There's a nice place or two in West End, but most of the places I like are in the Valley. If people want somewhere quieter, recommend aiming for a decent lobby bar at a hotel -- Rydges for the discounts, one of the city hotels on the river for a view and Emporium for somewhere a little closer to the action :p

Agreed. Three of us tried the other night and lucky we were admitted and further found a table - the entire process took 10 minutes. With 20 of us with no reservation - better chance of flying Concorde.

I'll make some enquiries to see how flexible Vapiano can be. If Saturday night might suit, then why not. (Except some may not view that venue as "premium" enough for our "main event").

Once again - I shall ask and see about the veggos. The problem might be that the one chef may have to remember you're the veggo and thus have to remember one show for the meatos and one for the veggos. Also, would he use the same cooking plate/plate area (and would that be a problem)...

Not bad. Prices as expected for the retro New Farm area, but a fair concession if the ambience and view match.

Finding a place of interest (no tarmac tours, people!) was a real problem for us. In a sizable number of cases, transport will need to be organised.

Other ideas I had were Mt Tambourine, but I'm guessing no one is up for hiking or the like. Plus, you would really benefit here if we had cars, not a coach.

Has anyone ever played golf drunk before?

Then again, I guess the course manager might not be happy.

For the golfers on this forum, please give suggestions for venue. Please don't say Royal Pines, or you may just have a walloping time getting there and back let alone with the game.

You need to go to somewhere pretty much upmarket or a hotel to even get a chance of finding a place with good spirits selections. (Most just have the market standard, which I agree is not satisfactory (e.g. Smirnoff Red vodka - yeesh.)) Hotel bars were pretty much out of the question with the possible exception of Rydges. The Valley was sworn off by (at least?) one of the members of the panel; West End similar if only for accessibility (no one seems keen to bus it, let alone walk it).

In any case, did you have the names of the bars handy. Right now the more ideas in the melting pot, the better.

Did anybody breath test Tiger Woods this weekend gone

As far as other golf courses besides Victoria Park, Nudgee is the obvious one.

Nudgee's quite a good course, although Sunday morning might be tough. I played there a few times before flying home to MEL.

They have two courses so there is less of a chance you will get squeezed by members.

Bars I rate in West End:
  • Sling Lounge
  • Lychee Lounge
  • Rumpus Room
The Melbourne Hotel is supposed to be good, but I've never been there so I don't know.

Other than that ... swearing off the Valley is kinda cutting off your nose to spite your face, though it's definitely much more bogan-filled than it used to be 5-10 years ago. As for the city, I'm yet to find a bar in the CBD that I actually like (and the bogan/white trash to normal person ratio is alarmingly high).

I was actually going to say that the bogan/white trash ratio in the Valley was higher than that in CBD.

Pockets of said high ratio establishments are finding their way into the CBD; perhaps in some cases the said bogans/white trash manifest themselves as suits!

Gah....someone give me classy... that's all I want...

I'm surprised by that assessment. The valley had an active campaign against bogans throughout the 1990s that seemed to have continued whenever I've been there since then. I'd be surprised if they've let that go.

I've stayed in the Valley a few times for extended periods (max 2 weeks) and found that there seemed to be a higher number of junkies than anything else. As usual, the simple math applies - looks rough it prob will be rough.

I don't know that the valley is any worse than anywhere else - it also has a highly recommended Chinese restaurant I particularity like ;)

Certainly many of the people that used to drag me out to the valley I would consider to be junkies. Maybe not your traditional junkie, but pill poppers nevertheless. (1 or 2 might be ok but when it takes 4+ to "enjoy" the night....). I must say I enjoyed the valley most when it was not much more than The Beat, china town and a real Irish bar.

I've had some great Chinese there.

I'm trying to think of a classy bar and I can't get much.

Are we talking about bogans of old, or new-age bogans?

I guess when I said bogan/white trash ratio is high, I forgot the junkies and to qualify the exact ratios of bogans/white trash.

The Chinese isn't as good as what it used to be many years ago - the cooking has 'adapted' to the influx of the masses. I am a bit biased because I know of a much better place for Chinese food, and it isn't my kitchen (I wish!) or in the city.
