Ric,

There is, look to the top RHS of the posting box above the smiles and below your name. There are 4 buttons, the one with the tick and ABC is the spell checker

Reggie, Sorry, should have made myself clearer....

What I mean is to have a auto spellchecker once posted. I noticed that a lot of posters does not use the "ABC" spellchecker so an auto spellcheck on the website (if there can be such a feature) would be great......keep us on our toes on the "King's" English!!

but then, some people may never get to post (and its best not to mention names)

I know I have an extremely low posting count considering the amount of time I've been registered here. I've been too busy learning from others and only post if I think I can really offer useful information.

It didnt take very long at all to learn which posters were the most frequent and which posters to take notice of (and they dont always coincide).

Neither the post count or the join date are essential in my opinion but do sometimes help to put a post in context. Titles for posting levels are unnecessary at all however. Richard.

rwatts says it in a nutshell. I have learned so much from this site, especially about YUP/KUP fares which is now book often, and circule pacific fares. However, I do not possess the knowledge of travel/flights etc that several others clearly display in this forum with their knowledge/experience being clearly evident, and even though I have several hundred posts since 2005 there would be less than 50 concerning flights with others being about credit cards, humour etc. Perhaps a rating system such as novice to expert in lieu of the present system, but the number of post does not indicate knowledge.

In many ways it is impossible to have any sort of rating for individual posters (be it a judgement or simply a crude measure, such as the number of posts), it really depends on the topic being discussed. Some are experts in some areas and others in different areas. For eg, I have absolutely no expertise or knowledge when it comes to AAdvantage, UA Mileage Plus or most non-Aus based FF programs, but do have a reasonable knowledge of QF FF & AirNZ Airpoints. With oneworld I know bu##er all about xONEx fares and Global Explorers, but having done a few Circle Pacifics recently, and made some QF RTW OW award bookings, know a reasonable amount about them. Same with CC's, etc.

In any event, if someone posts a load of rubbish usually other members quickly sort it out and make the necessary corrections!!!

I use Firefox, it comes with an inbuilt (US centric) edit box spell checker. Words are checked as I type.

e.g.
  • colour has a row of red dots (.........) underneath it (trust me ;) )
  • I right click on the word
  • I get a list of options
    • color
    • co lor
    • col or
    • Add to Dictionary
  • I click the latter and colour is no longer highlighted.

Other issues -

* Reputation is open to abuse, so no.

* I agree it's time for change, being a "Posting Freak" is "so 2004" - what, I'd still be one? oh well.

What about the following levels?

AFF Participant 0 - 50
AFF Regular 51 - 200
AFF Enthusiast 201 - 500
AFF Addict 501 - 1000+
AFF Moderator

my 2 cents worth.

Richard.
As one of the longer term members of this forum (& probably also with a proportionately lower number of posts given my time here), the above sums up my thoughts on the matter beautifully:)

Interesting to note that almost 80% of the members that have voted believe that it is time to update!

I agree. There is nothing wrong with changing the description of the posting levels. It does not degrade AFF nor does it degrade any member....

However, there have been 35 votes out of a total membership of more than 7,500. So about half of 1% of members voted. I'd say almost no-one actually cares!

But how many posters are zero or one post posters? That % is almost like including the dead on the lectoral register ;)

Also consider that the poll only has choices of yes or no , so anyone not caring and just wanting to see the results, has to choose one or the other

As I posted earlier, I invite any positive alternate ideas and I/we don't have seeing the results prior to voting as an available option.

I wonder if that principle can be applied to the next federal election? Or to next week's Lotto draw?

Not sure if the election would make any difference but I'm willing to vote for the Lotto draw.

Strange - I just did a test thread and it gave the option of viewing the results without voting. I didnt mean that something was amiss with the poll - just I assumed that people would have that info as that tends to be the default on various forums I have joined over the years.

I would be surprised if more than 120 members, these members have 105 posts or more, are regular active members. So for 35 to vote it is not a bad result.

I still don't see anything wrong with your idea. Whether people care or not about posting level descriptions is irrelevant. It is a clear mandate to update them.

Updating posting level descrtiptions is not going to hurt anyone. Although the 'Get a Life' one does not fit in with the rest of the descriptions.
