I was pointed to this thread today and have read with interest the 7.5 pages of comments from a range of members.
Personally, I'm ambivalent to any changes, as I don't need a title to stroke my ego. Yes, I'm a moderator, but there are plenty of members here that know more than I do about FF/FG programs who aren't Moderators. Moderator simply means I have an active role to play in keeping posts & threads within the rules of AFF. I'm also not one of the highest post totals any more, but I can live with that :-|
I agree that numbers of posts (in isolation) is not the best way to decide a members' value to a Forum. There needs be be both a quantitative level, but perhaps a qualitative overlay. What that overlay could be I haven't given a lot of thought
straitman, but any system is open to abuses (positive and negative) as has been outlined.
Many members judge others on the value in their posts (as outlined well by
rwatts) and to me, that is the strength of a community. It's not what elite status levels we hold, or how many miles we've flown that makes a scintilla of difference to another member - they simply show a level of experience (but not an ability to impart that knowledge gained). It should be the value of our replies to questions posed.
I can't go past
JDiver's description of the FT community (from the AAdvantage Forum), which echoes my thoughts of AFF:

The great thing about FlyerTalk is there is a large amount of combined expertise - a recorded "brain trust" of knowledge and experience, putting together many facets of them. If I or Ajohn or anyone else don't know an answer, I can be sure another member will, and that even if I reply incorrectly (we try to avoid that, but it occasionally does happen,) others will jump in to correct misinformation.
