I have a couple of family friends who swear by the use of daily tickets... Although you miss out on the savings offered by passes, this strategy means that you don't pay for skiing when things go wrong (injuries, bad weather, a change of plans, etc).
I have heard horror stories of people buying a season pass and injuring themselves on opening weekend, and being told no more skiing for the season. No refund
FWIW, I jump between season passes, value passes and daily tickets.
This year I bought a value pass and was about $50 worse off because I was in Singapore on weekend, so missed skiing that weekend. My sister purchased the same value pass and was about $150 better off.
A few years ago, I did a week at Mt Hotham, and employed the daily tickets strategy. The weather was cough, and I had a conference call to dial into, so I didn't ski one day. In this case I was slightly better off than I would have been had I bought the pass on offer at the time.
You win some, you lose some...
