I'm in the lounge in CTS international after my 11 days on snow at the Hilton Niseko Village. Not sure if I could suffer the ice and dust that are the Aussie ski fields. Got around 35cm on the peak overnight on my last day.

I went to Japan two years ago for the first time.

Completely ruined skiing for me in Aus and NZ.

Loved it.

I ended up forking out for a full day private lesson and it was one of the best things I ever did.

Did you go outside any of the gates?

It is possible to transfer from Falls Creek to Mt Hotham by helicopter.

Doing that trip by road doesn't work so well as you basically have to drive down the mountain and then back up again... You wouldn't have much change from 3-4hrs in the car.

2.5 hours door-to-door

As long as no vehicles go "tech" ;)

Gates 7 and 9 and Strawberry gate in hanazono (not an official gate).

Wasn't going to do any proper backcountry gates without avalanche gear, especially with the weather there lately. There's been layer after layer with warm weather then dumps, perfect conditions for cracks and slides to form. Likely going to get some snow shoes, probes, shovels and mammut barryvoxs before heading out next year.

Did a back country tour and had some amazing powder off the summit. Bluebird day, post dump, untouched snow as the top lifts and gondolas had been closed about 3 days running.

It'll be 13 years since I've been to Falls Creek so I hope I'll be lucky enough to be there!

I happened to have some spare time this weekend so I've made a cancellable booking at the Ibis Melbourne Airport on 24 July in case this ski trip goes ahead and departure from MEL is early the next morning...

Don't have to worry about the Hotham helicopter anymore, with no more flights... :(

Really? I haven't heard anything about it being discontinued?

I can't imagine it was making any money given the prevalence of "white out" days, but it is still listed on both websites.

It was mentioned when they had their financial routes I'm pretty sure.

Edit: Qantas Fact Sheet

ahhh, I thought you meant the helicopter itself, not the QLink flight...

FWIW, to fly to MHU then get a taxi to the village and get the chopper to Falls would be fairly risky (and expensive). The helicopter often doesn't operate due to weather.

I suggest you fly to MEL and join the road trip... If the weather is good we can investigate the heli taxi to Hotham for a day.

I have previously investigated flying from YLIL to YHOT (MHU) with some friends, but the cost of a charter was borderline given the limited time saved.

I'll save it for when I win the lotto...

Sorry to drag this one up again but I have just received the season pass for the UXB chariot :)
Any updates anyone?
Cheers Danger UXB

Thanks for the nudge. This was actually on my list of things to do tonight - no, really!

Dates: Friday 25th to Monday 28th July.
Cost: $50 per person, per night.
Location: Maisonettes, Falls Creek.

I will be heading from Melbourne to Falls Creek at about 8am Friday and can swing past Tullamarine Airport at 8.30am for anyone arriving that morning. My car seats four in comfort, with room for luggage and skis. I will be staying until Monday, and depending on the weather will either head home in the morning or afternoon. At this stage Heleigh and tuapekastar have indicated they would like a lift, so there is room for one more. The apartment is a 10 minute walk from the car park, unless the village road is clear, in which case I can park within 100 metres. An accommodation transfer service is available, but you thought airport prices were dear!

Anyone wishing to come for part of the weekend can also use Falls Creek Coaches, which also calls past MEL.

The apartment sleeps 7; 3 in one bunk room, and 4 in the other. There is a full kitchen, lounge and dining room as well - so plenty of room. There is a supermarket in Falls which has a good range of products, and there are a multitude of restaurants in the village as well. There are two ski hire outlets close by which avoids the need to hire in the city and then transport up the hill.

I can't guarantee the snow or weather, however I will be going up anyway, so I can guarantee good company.

Disclaimer: I have been able to get the price as low as possible, bearing in mind it is peak season and would normally let for $1500-2000. The apartment is 50% owned by my mother, and any monies collected will go to her and the other partner to cover their expenses. This means that I will indirectly benefit. Admin is aware of this.

Hi Jessica, would I be able to book a seat on Friday morning? I'm small so I should be able to squeeze in...

And I'll be skiing on the other side of the border that weekend :D.
Sounds like your trip will be a hoot!
