AFR's Joe Aston goes BAM!

Actually the ABC article previously quoted gives a reason for the abolishing of the CL or at least not allowing politicians to be members.
Towards the end of the article there was a comment on Clive Palmer who this week said that the CL should be abolished. He was rubbished by the ABC as you would expect but there reason for rubbishing him lends wait to his call.
And like many of the dishes on offer in this debate, this menu item's feature protein was Ancient Beef — Mr Palmer was dis-invited from the Chairman's Lounge 10 years ago when he used his Senate vote to block a bill lifting Qantas's foreign ownership restrictions.

So voting on a bill in a way that QF didn't want led him to be disinvited from the CL.

Obviously QF has a very different interpretation of corruption to most ordinary folk.

first line "offer, give or receive bribes, in any form, to or from any person..."

Chocolates to cabin crew are definately a bribe to solicit or hope for better service than those aroujnd you no matter what some say. Should never be done.
May not always be a bribe, especially if presented at the end of the flight as a "Thank You" recognition for good service that has been delivered. But I do believe presenting a gift before service has been provided would likely fall under the bribe category as is likely intended to influence behaviour or outcome. This is similar to presenting a tip to a bar tender as or before ordering. Leaving the trip after the service is complete is showing appreciation (gratitude) for the service already provided.

As I am often reminded, and often too late, timing is important.

What we could all do is run down to our local Dympcks and purchase JAs book “The Chairman’s Lounge” and read it and digest it

I want to see who knocked back the free upgrades

From the article...

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton sought to intensify pressure on the prime minister by demanding answers to questions about whether he called Joyce to request the upgrades.

A spokeswoman for the prime minister responded to that demand late on Wednesday by issuing a statement that ruled out any calls to Joyce.

“The prime minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade,” the spokeswoman said.

“All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.”

The statement came after days of work inside the prime minister’s office to check travel and office records over more than a decade, but the prime minister’s office did not elaborate on whether the statement included texts and emails.

Very loose use of words. I guess he could then go down the path of ‘someone else did it for me but I don’t know who that was’

Then again, I wonder if other politicians are doing something similar? I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

The best way is to completely ban CL access for all politicians.

Indeed. And I suspect the Prime Minister's office would only have records for official government travel - where the PM would quite rightly already be booked in the highest cabin of the aircraft, and I have no issue with that for official government business.

But there would be no reason for the PM's office to have any official records of his private travel arrangements for personal/leisure/family travel, which would be the only times he might perceive the desire to call upon a favour from a mate. The PM's office is not really in a position to make any categorical claims about such trips - only the PM himself can address that. And of course this is the same for any government official, regardless of being a member of parliament from either side of politics or any Public Servant.

No doubt. I see some political parties are keeping quiet over this.
And in further developments today all of the senior commissioners of … checks notes … the National Anti Corruption Commission have also been given memberships.

The amount of attention on the CL right now is starting to become problematic for QF who have been strangely silent.
