AIR - A Qantas Magazine

I only ever received issue one. When issue two came out just before the GFC induced Y only travel rules (Oct08), I didn't get it and haven't received one since. I suspect that my company's QF rep was told of the new travel restrictions thus all of the top tier travelers in my company got yanked from the AIR distribution list.

It's just a theory, but it's odd that the same month my travel changed to all Y (while I was still WP PG (for more than 8 months left in that membership year), I stopped getting AIR.

While WP PG may be an indicator it is not an exclusive criteria; I've had that for several years and no sign of Air in my mailbox.

Yeah I have read that before. Most of my SCs have been on QF in J which might be a factor. I wonder when AIr 7 came out to see what has changed in my status since then...

I received my 1st copy of Air today. I don't know how long it had been in my Post Office box for as I hadn't checked it for some time.

I'm thinkink that the cabin you fly in may HELP determine whether or not you get it. I know many of you on here fly waaaaay more sectors than me each year. Maybe it is Status Credits too?? I am thinking I will end at around 4000 if I don't fly EK at all. (Year ends in September)

I can confirm that cabin is not a requisite for receiving Air.

I only fly Y, generally e-deal/super-saver out and flexi-saver/full flex return. Last year have seen only QF metal and only domestic, previously had some CX in the loop. Qualified WP 2 years ago with approx 1500 SC's, requalled with 1400, currently on 900, and looking at between 1200 and 1400 this year.

Surname starts with M, so maybe they start at A, and run down the alphabet until they reach the number limit? Otherwise not sure why I get it while others (being J flyers and 3000+ SC's) dont.

From anecdotes posted, I believe there is a strong indication that in qualifying for Air there is a significant correlation between that and the number of SC's earned flying QF specifically - not oneworld or any other carrier.

FWIW, Last year I earned over 2600 SC's on QFF of which less than 1400 were earned on QF flights.

That could well be the case. ALL my SC's have been earned on Qantas metal OR Qantas Code Share flights.

I think you could be onto something there!

I earned 2,300 SC's last year - 95% of SC's earned flying economy on QF/JQi. I have earned 2,460 SC's so far this year - all but 350 SC's (AA) earned on QF/JQi.

Interestingly I had just turned WP PG when I got my first copy of AIR. I now have 2570 SCs but of those only 1350 are from QF flights. The balance being CX,BA and AA primarily.

Obviously we don't have access to the algorithms but there have to be a number of factors in play:

Totals SCs
SCs on QF
Cabin class SCs earned

Now looking at my stats. Of my 2570 SCs, 2,170 were earned in J/F international cabins...

I have received all the AIR magazines; I am a relatively "low level" Plat (typically 1200 - 1600 SC's/year), but that is almost all QF and almost all international J.

Air is provided to those that meet the following criteria:

Qantas elite 15,000 Chairmans Lounge Members 25,000 top echelon Platinum Frequent Flyers.

So if you are in the top 25K of WP's, your on the list! How that top 25 is ranked, be it by SCs or revenue I am not sure.

Definitely not specifically all earned SC's, considering I have had over 6800 'expire' over the last two years and have a current "year" to date figure of over 2000.

I am in the same situation as you, whughes - international J and F, 99% on QF, and self-funded flyer.

I have been receiving AIR ever since being borderline Gold to Platinum a while back (yes, was still a Gold FF when I started receiving it, so those who see it only as Platinium etc are a little off in their calculations) - so look forward to having AIR block up my mail-box for a while yet.

I am in exactly the same category as you. Shrek who doesn't receive Air generally has more SC than me, flys J to more exotic locations and uses a variety of OW airlines.

Well, it seems like I've hit the threshold:

My travel is 99% on QF or QF flight number (what's not on QF is an AA number in F), domestic travelling being a mix of Y (flexi-saver or fully flex) and J with international travel being all PE or J. Probably 50/50 work/personal funded.

Haven't read any of it yet.

:)

Yes i just received my copy of it. I personally think the amount of QF flights you take plays a large part in it as well as being WP/CL or they note you are doing a lot of travel and on threshold of WP. I missed one edition as in that time I was doing a lot of JQ * class flights to Thailand only, but as soon as I reverted back to QF I started to get AIR again. This edition is not a bad read compared to others.

Thanks for the update; I wonder if I will qualify, unlikely but will be interesting to see if I make the cut.

I got mine the other day and joins the other 8. The years are defined by a different coloured box surrounding the edition number I just noticed - Blue edition 1 & 2 (2008), Gold 3, 4, 5 & 6 (2009) and now Red for 7, 8 & 9 (2010)

For all the moans and groans from people saying its a waste of time etc, I'm still enjoying one of the final bastions of the class system - Qantas ;)
