AIR - A Qantas Magazine

I've received it from the outset. I just thought all Platinum flyers received it. It's kind of interesting to see the assumptions that Qantas make about their readers. There's stuff on museums and art that I like. Luxury cars, cigars and ultra-exclusive resorts don't grab me: I love my station wagon. I'm not over 50, I'm not into limited-edition Swiss watches, fancy wine, expensive chalets or jewellery. I regularly lash out on top-end restaurants but couldn't give a cough about expensive cognac. On the other hand, I would rather get a bespoke suit than shop at any of the places that advertise in it. It's all a little bizarre... and it quickly gets binned.

I think you are exactly the target market. No-one (except the ultra rich) is going to tick every box in the magazine but you have hit three of them at least. A pretty god ratio I think.

It's curious your impression is that I fit the magazine's demographic. I read their profiling as relatively one-dimensional and socially conservative, which is a huge turn-off.

Where did you get the "socially conservative" reference? I have received the last five copies and I consider myself economically and socially liberal.

As has been mentioned in the thread several times previously, just because someone has WP does not mean they have money. This can be especially true for company funded travelers that reach WP this way.

Interesting point!

Approx 90% of my QF flights would be work related and the rest is self funded.

It would be easy for QF to figure out business/personal expenditure as all business bookings are via Amex Travel and the latter is booked directly.

Additionally - my personal WBC Earth Card earns more FF points per month than flying - so they would be aware of my disposable income.

These factors may be taken into account to decide which WP's get the magazine.

With all the added ways to get "points" in the QFF scheme, maybe they data mine the WP database and look for people earning points from Flowers (disposable income) and Restaurants.

Just an out there thought.

With the advent of Direct Earn cards - they can very easily figure out an individuals disposable income.

I am of the that the credit card points coming into the account contributes on the decision on whether or not to send out air magazine.

In fact, they probably go out to potential advertisers ie LandRover, Leading hotels of the World, Franck Muller watches etc on the basis that their magazine is distributed to high spend individuals.

I may go some way towards disproving that theory:

- 99% of my qualifying flights are booked by work - either through Qantas Business Travel, or more recently AMEX Travel.
- The only contribution to my points balance is from flights or thrifty hire cars - 90%+ flights. I don't have any credit cards or other loyalty cards that earn points (I am thinking about joining the Woolworths one though)

Sifting through a pile of old paperwork today I actually found the previous edition of AIR unopened, so it looks like I may have been getting it for longer than I thought :)

Oh true, but as evidenced by this thread, lots get it that just scrape through too ;)
I try and scrape through to Platinum everytime. I got the first AIR magazine, and possibly the second one, but nothing since.

As has been mentioned in the thread several times previously, just because someone has WP does not mean they have money. This can be especially true for company funded travelers that reach WP this way.
And also self funded travellers who live in one state and work in another state.

I have seen a copy of it,was in 1A on a flight from ABX to SYD a few months ago and a previous passenger had left it in the seat pocket, along with his boarding pass (He was Platinum FF,and yes I tore the BP into little pieces and disposed of them securely),the magazine itself didn't impress me that much, nothing to write home about really,I do remember reading somewhere when it was launched that QF were targeting the top 1% of their FF's and that Qantas apparently considered that sort of person had a net worth of $2,000,000+.
As for the magazine I actually think the inflight mag has more interesting articles,so much so that if I don't fly for a couple of months I resort to reading the online version on the QF website.
Qantas could make some more money out of me if the offered the chance to subscribe to The Australian Way for those times when I don't fly.

I received edition 8 today. Some interesting articles on Marilyn, a Pooch & Sinatra, people living in Hotels and brewing boutique beer.

Interesting thought. Anyone ever asked if they'd consider offering a subscription?

Got my first issue today. Not sure if it coincided with my new WP PG status. Looks fairly interesting so far...

I got my copy of Air today as well, mind you Shrek's not talking to me as despite being WP for longer than me he has never received it!

While WP PG may be an indicator it is not an exclusive criteria; I've had that for several years and no sign of Air in my mailbox.

LOL!

OT
I did notice that in the "Qantas The Australia Way" magazine, the Qantas network route has also been redone (just better colours and whatnot). Is there anyway l can download a PDF version from somewhere?
