Re: Air Berlin in restructuring talks

Depends if the antitrust regulators decide rail is a competitor

Re: Air Berlin in restructuring talks

I'm reasonably certain my ORD-TXL flight is being canceled imminently. Have contacted QF as it's an Award ticket but they aren't doing anything yet. :(

Re: Air Berlin in restructuring talks

I was flying on an AA award ticket and mrsdrron on a QF paid ticket when Malev went into bankruptcy and ceased flying. We had flown on MA from Moscow to BUD and were due to fly with them BUD-FRA.Both AA and QF thankfully put us on LH-in J as per previous tickets.

Re: Air Berlin in restructuring talks

Unfortunately a lot of air has gone under the wing since then drron :( .

Re: Air Berlin in restructuring talks

lol I wish !! At the moment all I'm hoping is that I don't end up in Y

Airlineroute reported yesterday that TXL-ORD is closed for reservation from 1 October so you may well be fine.

Interestingly, what looks to be all of their long haul routes are only bookable in fully fare Y and J. I would have thought they'd want any old euro they could fine.

Re: Air Berlin in restructuring talks

I wonder if QF has considered buying parts of AB and turning it into a European Jetstar?

Be a guaranteed way to dust money (like Etihad).
German labour laws aren't exactly company friendly.

There is a reason Ryan, easy, Norwegian, Wow, Jet2 etc are growing much quicker than the airlines based in the major euro countries

They would need a local partner to do so. Ownership laws, access to the local traffic rights, etc. With Jetstar Japan, that's JAL. Jetstar Hong Kong was planned to be MU (wonder if it would have gone differently had they partnered with CX). Jetstar Pacific has VN.
Who would they partner with for a Jetstar Euro?

Though, even if they did create a Jetstar Euro, it wouldn't do much for oneworld unless Jetstar as a whole were to become a member in some fashion (affiliate or full).

Re: Air Berlin in restructuring talks

Oh please no, Europe already has enough terrible airlines!

Jetstar would probably rate pretty evenly or better than Ryanair and Easyjet, let alone the swathe of other LCCs. The main thing is only that Jetstar would need to be EU 261 compliant, but only to the degree of any other airline, i.e. do the bare minimum and only settle when brought to court. I suppose you are right though, why add another mediocre airline to the lot, when they could do with a good one for a change...

Intra-Europe is pretty much a mug's game these days. There aren't fantastic airlines amongst both LCCs and legacy carriers.

I wonder if QF has considered buying parts of AB and turning it into a European Jetstar?

...and it's a mug's game on this count, too. As others have chimed in, if EY can't make any good out of AB (even if it were to go more LCC), who is to believe QF has a better chance? QF home base is further away, the partnership and interlining opportunities with any Qantas group would be awkward and likely unwelcome.

Besides, if QF has to parlay its financial advantage in any way, I'm not sure anyone - from this forum to shareholders - would be too thrilled to bet on having a third go at an airline in a shin-slashing market.

Air Berlin now shutting down long haul flights from TXL at the end of Sept...

Air Berlin confirms full longhaul shutdown at Tegel (TXL) - Wandering Aramean

Still worried about where I stand regarding my TXL-MUC flight in mid December. Unsure if I should wait and see, or look at other options. Thoughts?

You won't get any QFF points or SC (although for this flight it's only 5SC). I don't think AirBerlin will exist in mid-December...
LH has direct flights for less than 100 euros and AF and KLM with connections for even less. If I were you I'd book something else. I have 3 AB flights in early October and I rebooked with another airline.

Air Berlin confirms full longhaul shutdown at Tegel (TXL) - Wandering Aramean

Still worried about where I stand regarding my TXL-MUC flight in mid December. Unsure if I should wait and see, or look at other options. Thoughts?

After reading the article, I checked the Air Berlin website and google flights. The award flight I had booked (TXL-JFK) still said confirmed in my booking, but even a paid fare could not be booked on either site past the 25th of September, my flight was for 24th of November. I rang QF who didn't seem very helpful at first but after explaining that the flight is no longer available they changed my booking without the fees. YMMV

My flight from ORD is definitely not going to happen based on the reports of the shutdown dates from TXL. AB have not cancelled the flight on their schedule though, it's still on the GDS and so I am left in limbo as QF won't touch the booking until it's cancelled.
I'm resigned to a mad scramble once that happens.
