Thoughts ?

I've heard..2 refitted 330s will come online in DEC2014 (sorry don't know exact dates)...1 will do SYD-PER (I assume an a332)...1 will do SYD-SIN (I assume an a333)... there are 30 a/c to be refitted, with a current completion time of EOFY2016... 2 a/c to be refitted every 4-6weeks fits into this time line.. (as 2 a/c are able to 'fit into' the a330 Brisbane hanger simultaneously...during this refit period, QF will need to send other aircraft requiring scheduled maintenance, offshore (SIN I think)...

This is what I've heard...happy to be corrected...please don't shoot the messenger:lol:

Sounds a reasonable "ballpark" but somewhat surprised one of the first will be deployed on SYD-PER rather than international routings.

They still may some competition on the coast to Coast routes ...

Their product is further behind on the medium haul international (IMO).

They seem to be doing ok domestically with their Y+ offering.

Of course I agree. Difficult not to.

I just can't resist having a go at EK whenever I can re the 7 across lol because I just think it's a joke and they seemingly haven't even got plans to refurbish them. Haven't tried it and not in a hurry to lol but perhaps its not as bad as it seems. Until you're the middle guy

I've done EK in J on the 777. The 7 across is fine.

The whole EK 77W J product is extremely poor and the quality Asian airlines removed the 2-3-2 J sloped seating years ago (long haul).

The biggest positive of not going for P1 next year is that I will not need to fly on the EK 77W out of PER (for the 2700 QFSC).

Fresh from the rumour mill... The BNE workshops are yet to be tooled up for the refurb. It is possible that the work may go offshore - depends on what happens with the Qantas Sale Act.

As I said - rumour mill, but I am comfortable with the source.

Re: Airbus A330 flights expected to include the introduction of lie-flat seats in bus

So long as it happens, don't really care where it happens.. After all the planes weren't originally built and kitted out in Australia

Given that MNL did the A380 reconfig, I don't see why they can't do the A330 as well?

Very interesting, though with ~4-5 months till refurbs are likely to start I wonder if this is normal practice (ie.not tooling up far in advance).

Pretty easy to debunk that rumor, BNE did the 767 refurb, any tooling needed would be the same. And of course they are doing the JQ conversions as we speak.

Now that is something I don't understand. Why aren't they taking a bird back from JQ and refitting at the same time as painting it QF colours and doing whatever else they are doing to it to convert it to QF?

Why convert once and then a few months later refit? That is not a sensible decision taken by a company that is trying to save money and save its reputation!

Qantas need to get the seats approved after testing etc, so in reality they had no choice since they are not going with a standard seat.

Apparently the 330s require some frames to be made that are fairly significant structures, and the BNE staff are wondering why they haven't started working on them due to the lead time needed.

Why does that stop them doing the conversion and refit in one hit? Surely the seat would have been tested by it manufacturer and approval sought before the announcement!

Because the seat is a Qantas rework (by Marc Newson) of a standard design , requiring it to go through the approval process again. The JQ conversions have been going on for a year now, which is why the changes are not simultaneous.

Fair enough. There should come a point then when they can combine the operations.

Let's hope, if it's going to take them 2 years to do the refit, that any apparent problems manifest themselves early on. Like seat droop.

How hard is it to provide a product fit for purpose?

Now that this thread from September 2012 has been bumped up, has anyone else noticed the "lay flight" in the thread title? I'm assuming this really means "lie-flat".
