as far as high surcharging on credit cards goes the
RBA says that
"We don't have the power to directly regulate those corporate entities.

"I don't like it but we (the RBA) don't seem to have the power to change it."

"I don't think it would be us (the RBA), it might be the ACCC," he said.
carnt post links but its on insidertrailing site and is dated 25/02/2013

so it looks like it might be going to the ACCC.

Has anyone had any success with reporting companies who surcharge to Amex? Has it ever actually achieved a reduction in the surcharge? Annoying that iiNet levy a surcharge on accepting amex.

It won't make any difference to there being a surcharge. They are within their rights to charge one. But it might make a difference to the amount. If they are charging well over what Amex is charging them and as a result it is impacting how Amex is viewed in the market I would imagine Amex would want to look out for its own best interests and talk to the supplier about why they are profiting from overcharging and blaming Amex for it.

I report almost every chain and stand-alone business that I find doesn't accept it (I haven't sent in any reports for a few months as I usually shop where Amex is accepted in the first place).

Some of the successes I've had (where I've received the ~"thank-you for your lead, this merchant now accepts the card" (or the similar one for having removed their surcharge)) are:

*Diva Jewellery (no surcharge)
*South Bank car park (Brisbane - no surcharge)
*South Bank Surf Club (3% surcharged removed)
*Roses Only (2/3% surcharge removed)
*McDonalds (a lot of us reported that one... perhaps Amex finally cut them a good deal)
*Garmin AU website (GPS maps)
*Tarocash/Connor (surcharge removed)
*Local coffee shop (since closed down lol)

Just a small list there, but if you give them good enough tips, they do seem to try to sign the businesses up (or to make Amex acceptance the same as Visa/MC - where there are no surcharges, or where the surcharges are the same for all card types? :)

Have you got a link to report a business? Trying to find a link on Amex...

I have put forth NRMA, who no longer accept Amex. But no luck. They almost lost my business over not taking Amex but I renewed for another year.

I never had a surcharge at McDonald's since they first started accepting Amex. This is in Vic.

The thing that gives me the extreme irrits is when a restaurant or hotel has the blue 'Amex Welcome Here' sticker on the door or near the register and then still charges a surcharge. I think that's a bit sneaky.

Report that motel that charges 5%.

Amex will advise them to reduce it, or they will cancel the merchant agreement.

I just went to the "united" service station and was informed they charge a 2.2% surcharge on Amex !!

I had success many moons ago having the surcharges included (ie not added as extra $$) in a car purchase. Wasn't a VW specific dealership though.

I was talking servicing.

Also, everything is neogtiable when purchasing - depends on how desperate they are to make the sale / how much they've made on the purchase price.

In some industries, it would be a USP (or close enough)! This used to be on one of the wide advertising displays in BNE domestic:
