AMEX not accepted or surcharge

Went to centrecom sunshine today and found charge 2% surcharge for VISA/MC and a whooping 4% for AMEX.

In some industries, it would be a USP (or close enough)! This used to be on one of the wide advertising displays in BNE domestic:

Of course they wouldn't. With a price increase of 27% in one hit from Lumo last July the credit card fees are nicely covered.

I was just looking at a Short Course @ Holmesglen and I noticed on their website it clearly states "Amex not accepted"

Oh well, guess I won't be going there then !

A total outright LIE

When places try that rubbish on me, I either walk out, or offer to pay 1% which is the likely difference between accepting VI/MC and Amex

If they then don't accept my 1% I will walk out and let them lose the sale

If they don't accept Amex, they don't accept Amex. Even if you offered them 100% they would have to first be an Amex merchant to charge the card.

True. I have a reserved car spot that I pay $224 a month for and it kinda hurts to have to use VISA instead of AMEX :(

I recently went to Sydney for the weekend and did not encounter one place that did not accept AMEX. Canberra on the other hand is another story.

ONA Coffee in Fyshwick do not accept AMEX and will not be having any of my business in future.

Wiffens Groccers at the Fyshwick markets DO accept AMEX and I will continue to shop there each week. :)

Momentum Energy (Victoria and Tasmania?) accept Amex without surcharge if you use their Westpac online portal.

As do Saasu (cloud accounting).

I did a Swan Valley "speed grazing" tour a couple of weeks ago with Taste Bud Tours and was amazed to see their flyer lists a 2% surcharge for Visa/Mastercard but no surcharge for Amex! It would be nice to see that a bit more.

Noted this on a menu today in London ... (and they don't accept Amex, but thought it was interesting)

"Our waiters receive all cash tips. For credit card tips, an 8% charge is deducted to cover processing costs. xx_xx_xx does not profit from this charge".

The uk recently enacted similar surcharge rules to Australia. Doubt this would stand up...

My local indian restaurant has stopped accepting Amex.

They have the stickers all over the door welcoming Amex still....But seem to have changed to St George bank for their EFTPOS, and I have found most places that do not accept Amex use St George.....

I spoke to the owner and he just rambled on about high fees and not many people used it etc etc.........

I got the bi-annual invite to sign up for a Platinum card today.

I seldom read them but this one caught my eye.

For Telcos, Australia Post, Utility companies etc, for the Plat card one earns only HALF a point.

Maybe that is the case for years on all cards - I have no idea.

But I spent over $10,000 this week with Australia Post and assumed that was 10,000 points minimum.

Anyone know if this is old news?

How long has that been the case for does anyone recall?

I am better off using Visa than Amex then

Better to have a bank co branded AMEX for these now. They (well ANZ) earn a flat 1.5pts/$1.

I had both but will cancel the Plat AMEX soon. I figured 80k points and a flight PER-MEL was ok for the $900. The bonus points earned when spending on travel/dining (we don't do much here but a couple of last minute work trips helped) added to the value. However not enough to justify it minus the 80k points for year 2.
