Yes the reserve will be a separate credit check.

Most people have no issues but I remember there being a post on AFF where one member was approved for the charge and rejected for the reserve. Amex shouldn't let this happen but not everything works to 'logic'.

The AMEX operator I spoke to implied it was a "sure" thing (getting the Reserve companion that is) if you already have the Charge. Take that as you feel fit!

Generally speaking, I think they would be quite confident that if you get approved for the Plat Charge, you'd also easily qualify for the Reserve.

But yes, there's definitely been 1 case (note not 'cases') that I've seen here where that wasn't the case. Should be able to find that thread with some searching.

Ah alright. More concerned about having an additional check on my credit file, as I'm planning on refinancing (and also half tempted to get the NAB Velocity Premium for an easy 60,000 Feb next year).

Hi,
I have my Platinum card and my 120,000 points, which is great, but unfortunately I misunderstood it all a bit and thought that 1 Amex Point = 1 Aadvantage mile. As you all probably know, by transferring through Starwood PG it equates to 1 Amex Point = 1/2 Aadvantage mile.

So I may not use Aadvantage, as I want to get 2 of us back from Europe next year and need 120,000 Aadvantage miles for this.

As the Amex points are very flexible when it comes to transferring to various FF schemes, is there a scheme I should be looking a that can get 2 of us to Europe and back in business ? I don't like Malaysian, so that is out.

thanks

Well - it you could get 2 x return tickets to Europe business class with a $1200 outlay that would be a bit too good to be true, right?

Best I can think of is Singapore Airlines - one way to Europe would be 68k to 80.25k depending on the destination, so realistically 120k points won't even be sufficient for a return ticket in business class...

Yep, there is a saying about things that are too good to be true.

The good thing about United and Americans FF schemes is that you can buy points at a reasonable price when they have bonuses. That is how we are going over to Europe on Thai with some purhased United Points

So 68k x 2 = 136k pts. If Krisflyer is 1:1 with Amex then i am nearly there, or close enough to buy pts to to up if i can do this.

Keep in mind 68k is only good for some of the EU destinations (e.g. Amsterdam, Rome, Athens). For London, Paris and most of the other destinations you'll need 80,250 points.

Look at the SAVER awards - if you book online you get a 15% "discount" - also keep in mind taxes & surcharges on Singapore Airlines are much higher than UA & AA

Something interesting has happened. I had two separate points balances - 150000 Ascent and 121000 Ascent Premium points up until this morning when I logged in. Now my Ascent points balance says "view points balance under card x91004" (my Plat Charge card) but when I click on that card, it only shows me the 121000 Ascent Premium points. I hope the 150000 points will show up soon - either back in my Ascent account, or better yet, in my Ascent Premium...

Activated my card tonight on the phone, and whilst signing up for other items, enquired about Plat Edge as companion card. "No problems sir, will send the form right out to you now as your companion card".

I've not had an AMEX card since 2010 (and it was USA AMEX)... Will see..

Anyone heard of Amex comping another card (not Edge) as the companion card?

Wow, I'd be really keen to here if you actually get the Edge as your companion card. I rang up twice to try and get it, but was told both times only the Reserve could be had a companion now. Perhaps AMEX has changed their policy in the last few months (we can but hope). If you wouldn't mind keeping us updated that would be great, I for one would be keen to find out how you go.

Yep, everyone recently seems to be being offered the Platinum Reserve as the companion card. It comes with a free return flight too, although unlike the Edge, NZ is included in the Reserves list of destinations. AMEX no longer offers the Reserve via its website, only as a companion, so it can be a little tricky to find info on it. Points earn profile is the same as the Plat Charge (no bonus supermarket earn) and if you are looking for the free flight destinations, check the post linked from my signature. Apart from the free flight it doesn't offer a Plat Charge card holder any benefits that the Charge doesn't already include.

Update: my Ascent points got merged with my Ascent Premium points! Nice surprise!

Still waiting on the paper work for Plat Edge, called up the other night and was told it was sent, but will take 7 biz days, and that they will send another form just incase for the companion plat edge...seems like a 'thing' anyhow, proof is in the card, not the phone calls...

Good outcome, and much better than the points are deleted for ever option!

Agreed!! :)

When I called up to follow up on the application form, the guy on the phone said he'd personally print the form and mail it to me himself. That was last Friday; I'll keep you guys posted. I asked him to email it to me but he preferred to mail it out. I might insist on an emailed form if it doesn't arrive this week.

Hey guys, this has probably been the only ridiculous customer service i've experienced from them, it took 6 weeks and 8 or so phone calls to finally get someone competent enough to email me a PDF. Everyone else has said 'we don't have pdf's' blah blah...

Anyway I've uploaded the PDF onto a public dropbox link, please feel free to use.
