Angry about proposed travel ban exemption for footballers

Wasnt Gil in Melbourne yesterday......

In the morning yes. He entered a 14 day quarantine in Qld yesterday as part of a group 400 officials, players, partners, physios, journalists etc.

The quarantine is paid for by the AFL and I would assume that the hotel, employees and downstream suppliers there are delighted for the business.

LOL oh it was most definitely covered way way way upthread and all the way down it too 😂

We are so very pleased here in QLD a key plank of Anna's election campaign the AFL grand final has been secured and happy its been such a priority for our government

Well if Qld has a CV19 Outbreak it will be in SA instead.

I saw him doing a media interview presumably today. Weird quarantine.

On hands and knees praying that Qld keeps it under control 😂

Amusing drivel. The pregnant woman was never denied a border pass. It was NSW health who advised incorrectly.
You have been told several times that her doctor at Lismore talked to the doctors at the Mater.Nothing to do with NSW Health.
This is the way all medical transfers should be initiated first by doctor to doctor discussion.

NSW health advised sending to Sydney. And nothing to do with Qld health or QLD government. The medical staff stuffed up. If she was put in ambulance and sent to Brisbane, no problem. She would not have been prevented from crossing the border.

It would seem very odd that footy fans would be allowed to fly to Qld without going through quarantine. (Well as of today..who knows what will be the case on 24 Oct).

I am Melbourne based and so I did not see the Byron Bay Edition of CH9 news.

I did watch the Melbourne CH9 story and it did not reference allowing 100s of AFL officials and fans to fly from Melbourne to Brisbane for AFL grand final without needing to quarantine. It did reference as part of the Grand Final announcement story the 400 officials and their families who landed on the Gold Coast late yesterday including Gil McLachlan the AFL CEO, who brought with him the premiership cup with him. All 400 of these people entered a special 14 day quarantine, which is why the footage of Gil today was from the quarantine site.

I have since read a number of reports on the Grand Final announcement and none that I yet read have that AP is allowing 100s of AFL officials and fans to fly from Melbourne to Brisbane for AFL grand final without needing to quarantine.

It may be that either CH9 Byron misreported. Or then again it may actually be so in which case I assume that it will eventually show up in a news report that someone can link.
The new trick is for the Vics to go to NT to quarantine because NT hasnt banned them unlike Qld then they can go to Qld unimpeded. Be a damn shame if your team lost the preliminary final 😂

Well optimistically we will be at zero cases within three weeks and off the Do Not Admit list everywhere ;)

What are odd's I can attend an AFL match at the MCG next year?

Well 3 days can be a long time in this Covid19 world, let alone by next year.

Caveat is I don't know where you reside. But let us assume in Australia. Vaccines are not yet widely available till mid season, but that quarantine still applies to international arrivals. Interstate border controls are gone. While vaccine is not yet out, treatments have advanced and Victoria in particular (as have all states) has improved its contract tracing so that hotpot control is more easily achieved. Testing is now also more easily quickly achieved.

Now when Vic might actually achieve zero community cases is uknown. It could be weeks, it could be months, or sadly even never. However the first wave and strain was eliminated in Victoria and I see no reason why it cannot be the same for the second wave. The next three weeks should give a strong indication if it is achievable, or whether it is only a pipe dream. Also note that as in New Zealand that a new outbreak could occur anywhere in Australia at anytime as we have aircraft and ships coming and going and sooner or later that or hotel quarantine will have another breach.

My presumption would be there will be AFL Games at the MCG with crowds in 2021, and anyone in Australia would be able to attend. By March crowd capacities at venues should be hopefully excellent.

I would also be quite confident that there will be a Boxing Day Test this year at the MCG and that most likely anyone in Australia will be able to attend. However Boxing Day might have tight crowd limits still and so getting a ticket for Day 1 may be difficult.

Actual crowd capacities will be strongly influenced by how often new outbreaks pop up after a run of zero days. The more often they occur, the tighter the crowd limits. Though having said that the various games so far with crowds have gone well.

Now that is a clever loophole, but are there even flights to Darwin from Vic or from overseas that can beused that way?

Id say so. There are still flights from Victoria for those who are exempted. And NT didnt ban Vics outright. Just pay for ISO.

My biggest concern, as a Queenslander, is not the risk imposed by the 400 or so AFL officials who will (I assume) follow appropriate Covid-Safe quarantine procedures, but the risk of non-official footy zealots who may see attendance at the game or associated activities as their "right" and falsify border declarations just so they can be in the vicinity of the big game. We know from the actions of some dishonest Queenslanders and other states' residents that some people feel it is their right to be dishonest if they think they can get away with it. How many interstate visitors will now be looking at "creative" ways to get into Queensland during October?

Did anyone see AP's AFL Linkedin post / election launch post ? is BLOWING up on talk back up here..... will try and find, apparently its deleted now....

EDIT: Here it is...

Whilst it a relief they will be isolated for 14 days, being able to hold a press conference hardly seems to be the hotel quarantine others have to do, still seems like unnecessary travel, and unfair exemption. The cup could have ben couriered, given the players and refs already mostly in Qld, doesnt seem like these new arrivals were essential.

The more hypocrisy i see from AP, cowtowing to AFL to secure votes from a minority of Queenslanders who give a toss about it (Queensland is foremost a Rugby League state, and then Rugby Union) whilst keeping NSW and ACT locked out, the less inclined i am to spend any of my tourist dollars there when it does eventually reopen.

I would say that the QLD government is handling these exemptions poorly, but that would emphasise the complete ineptitude of the ACT government who cannot or will not introduce a bubble with it's border towns, or even easier, control airport departures.

The QLD gov think its safer to let at-risk Victorians into an oft-breached bubble, despite there being no guarantee they're not bringing COVID into that bubble, than it is to let in an ACTerritorian where there hasn't been a whiff of COVID in two months.
