And here is where I have issues with codeshare/partnership arrangements as opposed to alliances.

There is no way I want to travel to Europe on a middle eastern carrier.

I'm willing to give 'em a go.

==BUT==

Each to their own but no way I want to travel to europe via london!

VA + Partners don't fly to Berlin or Budapest, so why leave QF + OW for VA+partners?

Did anyone here go to the airport to get the match then obtain whatever else was the "additional treat" for presenting yourself there in person?

I did (go to the airport) and I didn't get anything special (other than my temp plat card).

You will be able to choose between just points, or points and SC's.
No transfer as such, more pooling the points or SC's into the one account.

In your example Swanning_it , if you were to travel overseas with the family, you could "pool" your kids SC's that they earn flying with us, into your account. Thereby you hit your membership levels much quicker.

Question from left field (and a serious one at that).

Do you also get to pool the "eligible sectors flown"?

sorry, am i missing something? What's wrong with middle eastern carriers?

A Virgin Australia flight to europe only needs one stop with Etihad.

Fair enough if that's where you're headed. I just booked a flight to Istanbul so that example was front and centre of my mind.

I'd be quite interested in giving Etihad J a go

It's not bad. Love the middle eastern meal options. Hard product on their older A332s is a little ordinary these days, but still comfortable enough for me to get some proper shut eye. Haven't been in J on any of their newer planes, which I understand is something of an upgrade..

From my perspective the service wasn't as personable as I've come to expect on VA, but it was still fairly reasonable. :)

777, the new alliance with SQ will also be interesting. I think that SQ fly to A380 to Zurich, so l could always jump back from Zurich instead of going through LHR.

Well, this has certainly tipped me into the "buy virgin" camp now.

I've been QF Gold for years. I don't fly enough to get Gold in two programs, and I like my benefits, which is what always stops me from buying the Virgin seat. As I often say, no point in having status and not using it.

Sometimes I even fly enough to get to Virgin Platinum but not quite enough to get QF Plat....

Good work, Virgin. :)

I'm locked into QFF currently with stacks of spend points but with 4 trips coming up this deal looking good, if they bump me up from Q SG to V Plat its a done deal.
You want to be comped Velocity Platinum with only QF Gold?

Me too - no more ****star out of NTL for me anymore!

It is the benefits that make me choose qantas/OW over other choices, even when not always the most convenient, so I am VERY glad I did my status run to get WP, cos now it gets me the benefits on virgin, which I actually think are a bit better than the QF platinum program anyway...

Go virgin, very happy with this!

I still fly VA to MEL from NTL, but unfortunately i have to fly with ****star to OOL from NTL since VA pulled out on April.

Just hope it comes back soon, it is torture on these ****star planes!

I'm going to say something bold here (and maybe a bit harsh & selfish)

As a current Virgin Gold and Qantas Gold (Ex QF Platinum who now flies both to get both status) I find it a little unfair that a not yet so loyal Platinums are given the status over somebody like me who is a Gold (By flying the miles and probably won't make platinum).
I don't think you are being selfish and I would tend to agree with you.

I would also be extremely disappointed if QF offered VA Golds/Platinums a status match when they have not shown any loyalty.

But at the end of the day I think the number of people who will actually keep that status when it expires will be lower than expected.

Arrived at the VA lounge in MEL today with gold card in hand. They asked whether I had status on any other program they could match... And totally missed the fact I had turned plat myself today... Teething I assume :)
