They've always insisted you have a legitimate reason to have an ABN. People who get ABN's for discounts on trade or Aquire type deals alone, should not have an ABN.ATO wants to cancel my ABN!
Long story...
Was an employee cleaner years ago, then made to become an ABN holder cleaner.
Still have a paying identity/entity so I am not the most downline cleaner.
BEWARE that the ATO now wants proof you deserve an ABN.
You might get a letter from the ATO if you were once an employee but made a subbie ABN holder.
Lucky for most of you, but some will be in my position.
I didn't join Aquire for the reason, and its come back to bite if I had joined.

I got pulled up last year as well as my ABN had been inactive. A link to a website, a copy of my business card and an invoice to a client, BRN and proof of domain ownership was all they needed, which any business should have. I was fortunate in that I had actually just resumed activities so had an invoice to show them, which they were very insistant about (The other items were optional).
ATO randomly pulls people up, but they appear to have been on a bit of a crusade the last 18 months (know of many people getting the 'please explain' phone call).
Not all ABN holders are registered for GST (I'm not, it's a side business that makes very very little). I'm sure they'll be ensuring i'm declaring income in my regular tax return now thoughI imagine they want to make sure people actively trading with ABNs are actually completing BASs

I'm not a taxation guru but I was under the impression some small businesses didn't have to declare income as it's classed as a hobby (ie hobby farms which wouldn't stand on their own two feet if not for the owners non-financial interests). I could be wrong however.
I was under the impression that you simply declared it in your own personal tax income (when my account asks 'any other income?' I need to tell them). I'd rather you were right of course, but I suspect the taxman is greedyI'm not a taxation guru but I was under the impression some small businesses didn't have to declare income as it's classed as a hobby (ie hobby farms which wouldn't stand on their own two feet if not for the owners non-financial interests). Drewbles, income from ABN cannot be added to general work income, or the ATO will make it even harder.
That is what I did when I was first put onto ABN, prior to my first visit to a registered tax agent, ABN income has to be added to a separate column of income.
That was then, but now seeing my ABN is going to be cancelled unless I can provide due evidence, which is hard in the sense I can't give the places I clean an invoice, I have to give the invoice to my payer, which is not the place I clean, so am not sure where to put it.
But my accountant should/would be able to tell me.
All up I made maybe $35k.
Not much but I am not chasing work, if I were, I could make maybe $60k running from one cleaning assignment to another.
Ok, will go into read mode.
Thanks again.
As a sole trader you're responsible for your own super arrangements and any staff you employ. The key features of a sole trader business structure are that you:
- use your individual Tax File Number (TFN) when lodging your income tax return
https://www.ato.gov.au/Business/Sta...Choosing-your-business-structure/Sole-trader/
It's "other income" on your personal tax return. They wanted an invoice, they didn't care who it was to, stating my ABN, my trading name and services rendered. The ATO won't care if it's a company or a client, as long as it's an invoice with the appropriate details.
Some of mine have also but there must be more coming as it was for flights until 30th April.
In the past I only ever remember getting them (bonus points) all post at the on time - or am I mistaken?
