Oh I see what you did there. :p

Game over today one way or the other. Starc can bat. A lead of 150 is defendable.

The game is now on. Most interesting test to watch. Some proper test cricket.

I'm looking forward to tonight but I may have to not be able to read or comment on AFF at all during the innings depending on score posting...

I think Johnk was talking about the Aussie bowlers.

Gosh! Really :) :)

I also thought Johnson and Lyon had some good overs. As with Anderson in first innings.

Good to see Warner score fastest Australian 50 in Ashes history. At last. Pity about Smith.

ed: as below, correction, equal fastest with Yallop in '81.

Some good overs. Not enough though. Personally I think Lyon was very lucky to get 3 wickets as 2 of them threw their wicket away and the other should have been reviewed.

Warners first innings average is poor. Even poorer is his mandatory waste of a review in almost every match. His second innings average is good but most of those runs have been when Australia had game won on First day and he has come out belting second innings.

Rogers goes in 2 tests after this one. Huge hole. Clarke may also go. Warner will be a liability not an asset because that will put middle order under huge pressure which we've seen how that's handled.

Warners first innings average is poor.

42.49 versus his overall average of 46.66, for about half of his runs (1734 out of 3500) and six of his 12 centuries.

Probably not a statistically important difference, and certainly not one of Australia's bigger problems at present.

His last several innings in matches Australia have lost are 71, 70, 66, 133, 29, 19, 58, 17, 52. He pulls his weight.

I don't have the information handy right now but I saw some statistics on CricInfo regarding Warners Ashes averages.

He has played 17 tests and is averaging something like 21 in first innings and 68 in second innings. That is a huge difference and the majority of those second innings scores were when Australia had the game won on First day.

Need to see if I can find that information again.

Sitting in front of GEM now - wife has friends over so uninterrupted viewing tonight. First two overs have been interesting.

Excellent! ;)

Enjoy the incessant adds. I'll join you after Jonathan Creek.

You'd better hurry up lest the Australian innings be over. A good catch in slips by Joe Root to remove the last batsman.

Not a bad lead. Let's see if the bowlers can get their act together this time,

I thought we were going to just make it to lunch, but we missed by about 10 minutes. I assume they are taking lunch now and won't come back until the normal time. I couldn't bear watching it so I used the Cricinfo text commentary screen and followed it from there while catching up on AFF threads and survey sites, wondering how many QFF points I've missed out on when I didn't get the invites to Qantas Red Planet.

The stats on Cricinfo say that there have been 3 times in recorded history when Australia have won the test match when England were chasing less than 125 runs. I don't like our chances tonight, however I hope our bowlers put up a good fight.

Okay I was wrong. It looks like there will be a few overs before lunch.

Was cleaning my teeth when the Poms lost their first wicket - I ran back to the bedroom TV whooping and gave the carpet a bit of a spray
