Alastair Cook is a clone of my younger son. The likeness is incredible.

Nussar Hussein lived across the road from us when he played cricket for our local cricket team. Before he captained Test cricket obviously.

Eight matches without winning - they drew the last Test, remember? And deserved to win it. But a draw is as good as not losing I guess.

A draw is not a win, so to say eight matches without winning is correct (in this context, "not win" does not necessarily imply "loss"). In any case, a draw doesn't count either way; it's as good as not on the record (except that it has to be in order to avoid "holes" in accounting for when tests were played).

Australian players are the highest paid players in the world , go figure

I thought most of that is bolstered by their off-season T20 activity, but then again maybe I'm not actually surprised.

Think sponsors will start to retreat after they realise what a bunch of chumps they are putting their brand behind?

His father umpired for Nasser Hussain's brother team. (In the sense that he raised his finger whenever Nasser Hussain's brother appealed.*)

*Spoken from experience as someone given out LBW after smashing a ball to deep square leg! Unfortuantely the new AFF terms and conditions do not allow me to describe in detail the actual event.

Here's a question we should have over the BBQ, but which Australian players would make it into the current English team? Clarke, Ryan and maybe Haddin for me.

You'd only pick Haddin because Prior has batted rather badly in this series. I would have thought Prior kept better.

They've said the Aussies have bowled well and yet Harris is the only one you'd pick? Fair enough, hard to pick Lyon over Swann. Siddle vs Anderson? Anderson won the first Test but hasn't fired since. Broad had one good Test (and what a good Test!) so it's hard to say. Starc has been dropped when he's done okay and kept when he's played badly in the past.

Rogers would have to be picked I guess. The problem is that Bell is so far ahead of any other batsman in this series - you'd be hard pressed to pick Cook or Trott on their form in this series though. But who else would you pick? Pietersen picks himself I guess. Root has had one score and Bairstow hasn't done anything.

So a bit of competition for the bowling places but not much for the batting.

?, Rogers, Clarke, Pietersen, Bell, ?, Prior (keeping), Broad, Swann, Siddle/Anderson, Harris.

Can't really pick the ? spots. Warner vs Cook/Root? Number 6? Smith? Hardly.

So I thought I would turn on the TV and see how the cricket is going.

Why did I bother?

Warner lasted 11 balls and Australia is 31/1 after winning toss and batting....

Taxi radio just said 18 runs from the over. Wtf and where was this a month ago?

No real pressure now and 2 new bowlers in English side.

Still Watson playing well and hope he goes on to get 100.

I didn't know he played in the SACA comp, which club did he represent?

Thanks for the reminder - on a long night shift, so just tunes in on the radio. 137/2 - Watson 92

Watson has just scored 127, his highest Test score as Australia goes past 200.

Smith 25. 3/206

Bedtime for me over in Perth. Looking forward to seeing what the score finished when I wake up

Great innings from Watson with a touch of luck as you usually need. The pity is it came when it doesn't matter. The other bad thing is that it will probably delay his "retirement".

Watson summed it up: pity it wasn't in the first four matches.

Great innings (congrats to him) but it was in a fairly meaningless test against a semi-second string bowling lineup.

The Watson haters will no doubt say he gets the runs when he needs them, not when the team does.

Having said that, I guess he keeps (should keep) #3 for a while - which in Aus will mean less exposure to spinners but at least a short rest between innings. No-one else is bashing the door down for the #3 slot in any event. Could work.

He had 45 innings between 100s....

Nice to wake up and we aren't all out :o

Watson 176, so that will do everybody's confidence the world of good. Seems to be a good batting strip, so I can't see us bowling out England twice - but hopefully famous last words.

Smith 66 n.o. and Siddle 18, 4/307 at stumps. I smiled when I saw the partnership was 18 off 2.5 overs and all of them to Siddle. :D
