Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

Thanks Doc.

The news article on Cricinfo I read mentioned that George Bailey said "We are going to break your hand" and Clarke said "We are going to break your f...... arm". Now we have Shane Warne telling us he heard James Anderson bully George Bailey and Michael Clarke come to his rescue.

My question is why would James Anderson sledge/bully when they are losing? Are we sure George Bailey did not start it and James Anderson retalliate?

Anyway situation was handled poorly by Australia and I hope it does not continue for the rest of the series. Worst of all would be sledging and including comments about Jonathon Trott in the sledge.

JohnK. Cricketers sledge when they are winning. Cricketers sledge when they are losing. They sledge when they have just been hit for four. They sledge when they've hit a six. They just sledge. Because they are out there for hours on end. It breaks up the boredom. It impacts on others concentration.

No one is condoning any sledging that deals with family members and health issues. But there are a couple of rather funny sledges about girlfriends/mothers and biscuits. And Mars bars.

Cricketers just sledge.

Thanks for explaining sledging.

"Dont miss that short putt"
"That putt is breaking up hill, not towards the creek"
"Did you notice there is water in front of the tee"
"That greenside bunker looks a little deep"
"That green is small"

That's the clever sledge indeed. :)

I think today that maybe some of the cricketers aren't clever enough for subtle sledging like they did in "the old days". So it comes out all wrong.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

As someone who played a decent level of cricket for a long time I can tell you that sledging is not about offending the person it's about breaking their concentration pure and simple. If I could have a remote controlled blowfly that would certainly save time coming up with more witty retorts .

Sledging also keeps you entertained on the field, as a player in a highly unsuccessful team the repertoire we have in the slips cordon makes the day very enjoyable.

Our slips cordon once consisted of a QC a heart surgeon and a garbage truck driver. Unquestionably one of the finest days of sledging I've ever been involvement in, including the QC convincing a batsman that there was instructions on how to use the bat written on the back of his bat!

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

I was also disheartened to hear of what Clarke said. We'll never know if Anderson also made a similar threat (not a sledge) unless there's audio of that to prove it, but I'm not against sledging... Threats to break arms though should be dealt with by the police. It's completely out of line and out of keeping with the sport. Things do get heated, but when you start making threats, you've gone too far.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

I was watching one of those sports panel shows on Fox Sports last night (360?) and the panel pretty much supported Clarke in that they thought it was a change for him to show a bit of 'mongrel' instead of metrosexual or words to that effect.

All of the Aus captains from Chappelli to Ponting were sledgers with the exception of Taylor apparently. Taylor said he didn't sledge because he couldn't think of anything to say.

I think everyone is getting worked up over pretty much nothing. If the microphone hadn't picked it up we never would have known. The umpires didn't report it.
Broad says sledging is what he expects on the field. It's the off the field stuff they take exception to, and rightly so I guess.

He has made up for it since!

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

I found Ian Chappell's take on sledging interesting. He is widely regarded as a sledger of the First Division but he was fairly scathing of what happens these days, saying that sledging certainly occurred in his playing days, but was spur of the moment on the field and had none of the pre-planned 'mental disintegration' aspect associated with it.
He reckons it'll get physical if allowed to continue as is.

I will stick to my original prediction of England 2-1 and retain the Ashes.
Revised prediction is Australia 3-0.

Australia very impressive and England is shell shocked after being in a good position on Day 1.

Good to see John , if Australia can bat well I am confident that the English will struggle against Johnson and co.
I am looking forward toThursday ,nothing better than the first day of a Test match at Adelaide Oval. :D

It is a sad reflection of the state of Australian cricket if Johnson is back in the team. In saying that he will probably prove me wrong and be man of the series.

Not sure how you did this but it worked!

Glad I could help.

With England coasting at 2/81 and Johnson 0/32 after 6 overs I was thinking what a dumb selection. And then he was gifted a wicket before lunch and we all saw how the English collapsed from there.

I heard him say it could end up with a punch-up on the field.

That made me recall Time Lane (or Drew Morphett) saying a way back in 1981-82 after DK Lillee booted Javed Miandad up the date that before too long we'd see an all-in brawl! Thirty years on we're still waiting. And wasn't that a much worse incident than anything verbal?

Funny how we have been trying out the younger players for years and they have consistently failed (Hughes, Marsh, Khawaja et al) but then we've gone back to some 'older' players who fail a bit less and we've stuck with them. It may be paying off at last but of course is no long term option. But a while back we were eyeing England's stocks with envy but now they are talking about their 'ageing' squad and don't seem to have batsmen or bowlers knocking on the door either. Most of their players are the wrong side of 30 now with Cook, Root and Broad the exceptions. Not to say that 30 is old but the sun starts to set by 33 for most players. It will be interesting to see who is left playing for either side in five years.
