Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

The only thing I could think of that might take a little of pup's sledge was whether there was a history from the series in England.
That is not how a captain is supposed to behave regardless of whether there was prior history or not.

If people really think that behaviour is acceptable then we should quickly get it out to all the schools and get the kids ready for test cricket now.

Very low point in Australian cricket. Not to be laughed off either.

JohnK, people including captains have always sledged. The only difference this time is that it was heard through the mike.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

I wonder when sledging really started, my guess the 70's when any light hearted banter that probably used to occur turned into ugly aggro.
The Gabba incident made no attempt at wit and was an outright brutal threat. No wonder the team is being led from off the field.

I agree, in my opinion microphones should be turned off (muted) between play. What happens on field should stay on field, the only taunts that should be penalised are against race, sexual preference anything else, within reason is "acceptable" banter and taunting...

Edit: In regard to the recent comments from Clarke, anybody agree with me that "where there's smoke...there's usually fire...?" what was said to prompt his comment in the first place...?

Newton's 3rd Law : To every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction ;)

YMMV

I think it is more that Clarke isn't a particularly witty kind of guy. Someone else could have made it quite funny and so less offensive. It was certainly well entrenched in the '70's.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

The "you've just dropped the World Cup" was a classic.....even if Waugh didn't actually say it. Who knows - but a classic line for the papers the next day!

That was not sledging. That was unacceptable.

Lets not blame in on the stump microphone.

And David Warner? Does he ever think before he speaks? This is a guy with an average of 39! Wow!

You know what? The only people "alarmed" by Clarke's comments are those who don't play/haven't played much cricket. Did you ever read about the Bradman era and the intimidatory bowling, and what was said about the way Bradman played it? Really, this is just a storm in a teacup. Political correctness gone wrong.

"Sledging is a term used in cricket to describe the practice whereby some players seek to gain an advantage by insulting or verbally intimidating the opposing player. The purpose is to try to weaken the opponent's concentration, thereby causing him to make mistakes or underperform. It can be effective because the batsman stands within hearing range of the bowler and certain close fielders; and vice-versa. The insults may be direct or feature in conversations among fielders designed to be overheard."

And to read the papers this morning Anderson came out to bat and threatened to punch Bailey in the face,he was at a very short distance from the bat.Clarke made his response in defence of his team mate.
Still he should have come up with something a little better.Unfortunately the word he used is commonplace in today's society not just on a sporting field.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

Cricket has so many problems and allowing the level of unsportsmanlike conduct just one of them. Nothing worse than winning a game ugly. Having played the game for close to 10 years as a lefty all rounder, unfortunately have close to zero interest these days.
In contrast, Baseball and NFL/College football has a zero tolerance approach covering not just sledging but even staring down from a distance and celebrating at the opponents expense. Any player breaking the code, both written and unwritten soon ends up with a 90+ mile an hour fastball aimed initially at the body with repeat offenders getting them aimed higher.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

This has taken me back to Paul Kelly's song "Bradman": PAUL KELLY - BRADMAN LYRICS

Those were the days of wisecracks, that were clever and not full of foul language. Gentlemen played the game.

Bill Woodill's comment in the song is pretty close to how I feel abut the whole sordid episode...perhaps "both" could be inserted instead of "one"

They quicker the ICC formulate for cricket a similar code to that mentioned above by DaveB, the better.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

Denis Compton and Keith Miller were fiercely competitive on the field. I suspect there were plenty of words between them when they played against each other. At the end of the game though they would head out on the town together and on more than one occasion turned up at the ground the next day together and still in dinner attire and nursing hangovers. Today they would be called unprofessional and probably be banned for many games.

I know who I'd rather watch. Sport has become so focused on money the entertainment is ebbing away.

If someone was telling me they were going to break my hand I would have threatened to punch them in the face as well.

The language that Clarke used is unacceptable from an Australian cricket captain and to blame it on the stump microphone is childish. The attitude of this team is unbelievable.

They are probably the worst Australian cricket team in over 30 years and then get a win and all of a sudden they are world beaters? Um.... No...

John the break your arm comment came after the punch in the face comment by Anderson.
I have also said in the post you quoted that he could have come up with something better. But certainly should have said something.Although Bailey is an experienced cricketer I believe this was his Ashes debut.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

I used to get sledged big time playing school boy cricket 30 years ago......I had to wait a few months but I always had the last laugh when the Rugby season started:D

Thanks Doc.

The news article on Cricinfo I read mentioned that George Bailey said "We are going to break your hand" and Clarke said "We are going to break your f...... arm". Now we have Shane Warne telling us he heard James Anderson bully George Bailey and Michael Clarke come to his rescue.

My question is why would James Anderson sledge/bully when they are losing? Are we sure George Bailey did not start it and James Anderson retalliate?

Anyway situation was handled poorly by Australia and I hope it does not continue for the rest of the series. Worst of all would be sledging and including comments about Jonathon Trott in the sledge.

Re: First Ashes Test - live TR

Is this the approved list for the second test in Adelaide...?

[h=1]Sledges you can use[/h]I’ve seen better batting in the shower
the only runs he gets is on the toilet
He’s fishing more than Andrew Symonds.
everyone hold on to something, this guy cant drive
I’ve seen better batters in a fish and chip shop
More leaves that a tree
swinging like a rusty gate
swinging like a dunny door on curry night
More blocks than a Lego factory
Like an old lady poking with her umbrella at a wasp’s nest
Beaten like a red-headed step son.
Watching you is making me a worse batsman.
You couldn’t score in a brothel.
if your parents seperated, would they still be brother and sister?
pass me the ball i have to pull all the splinters out of it
He’s bowling so slowly that if he doesn’t like a ball he can run after it and bring it back
