ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Well Serfty we endured XFA,XFB and the Embraer 190 I think it was (the one where the flight attendant read a book).
I would battle to get Mrscove onboard again but I am a devil for punishment so I go with them domestically when it suits me.
I still have 2 commas in the Velocity account and I am holding on tightly to my RED status.
The ATO thread has given our taxpaying citizens choices so thank you js once again.
Being in Perth we generally go on SQ but this month we are doing a QF run to LAX.
Hi cove, I would not consider using either Velocity nor QFF points on a coast to coast flight ... Different strokes for different folks.

Having posted that, bother XFA and XFB have gone to "meet their maker" or some aeronautical variation of that. (Not that I minded them in the early days.) E190's are fine for short trips but not transcontinental, similar in that way to 737's.

There are bank branded Amex cards that do still work but watch the earn rates and cap limits on the card you may plan to use.
Amex direct cards are way out of the game.

Re: Credit cards and FF points for ATO transactions

Have a look at the last page on your last statement, you might be lucky and get the message this month if not there

May need to see a psychiatrist as I have just paid my BAS and planning on pre paying a big GST bill middle March well before it's due
Wonder if the ATO receipts will fall if the credit card use drops off or are we the only addicted ones ??

Indeed the AFF folk paying on time or early are a blip on the horizon - make no mistake the ATO just adore people / entities paying on time or early - it costs them far more pursuing late payments than it does copping CC fees.

I thought they had worked it out so they broke even on the fees. Would be very interesting to know if percentage of payments on time has gone up over the last few years since CC pay- for some people/businesses even deferring the payment by a month might seem attractive

I would think the trial of CC payment just magically became permanent would suggest pretty strongly it is working for them.

Anyone with experience with successful points on BankMECU or Qantas Credit Union? Seemingly the only 1:1 uncapped Visa/MC left...

My application for a QCU card is not to pay ATO but just to pay household bills where a Qantas point a dollar can be harvested without a capping limit.
The choice of which card to use for ATO is generally driven by the desire to have points/ miles for redemptions.
Don't forget to pay early if you can afford it on any card where the rules are changing for the worse based on an announced date. With the Westpac Kris Flyer Platinum paying 3 days early will get you an extra 0.25 miles per dollar on their Amex between March 31st and April 3rd.
The earn rate changes on April 1st on that one.

As an aside I value velocity points at least double that of QFF points.

Can I ask your reason?

More than an aside to me! Im similar in that I don't value QFF at much and traditionally have preferred SQ cards as I value SQ at at least 1.5 QF. However SQ becoming increasingly hard, maybe I should be thinking laterally and looking at VA.

An example may help - Over the last three weeks I have redeemed two business class one way awards between MEL and LAX for Christmas/New Year.

MEL-LAX using QF cost 96K QFF points and $513 in +++.

LAX-xBNE-xSYD-MEL with VA cost 94K Velocity points and $68 in +++.

Moreover, there has generally been far better Premium cabin availability on VA than that for Qantas.

OK, it does cost $55 to depart Australia ...

I came to to a similar opinion as serfty in the last year or so...whilst I still accumulate Qf points (using them selectively, incl. Plat award requests/ releases)...my main aim is to accumulate non QF pts (in partic. Sq and Va) as my 1st preference...I am very interested that serfty values them at 2:1 but I tend to agree. The main issue with redeeming Qf awards is the huge surcharges but these are very little on EY as well (redeeming VA points). Currently, I don't have a good card to pay the ATO that earns Va / Sq points after the recent devaluation of the Westpac Altitude Black for ATO payments :(

Surcharges have just dropped significantly on QF.

Where?

I still see $409.87 in +++ for a MEL-LAX economy reward. QFF are still charging $340/$390 in YQ.

(I do expect them to drop eventually ...)

Y awards have always been terrible value IMHO, but the taxes on that route are high excluding the fuel surcharges.
