ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Hi folks,
I've got a large tax bill coming up soon and i want to maximise the points I'll get for it. This thread is long so I'm hoping someone can point me at a condensed version of the important information.

I currently have QantasCU & Macquarie Plat Visas, so hopefully one of these will work. If I can get a better earn rate from another card I might get that though.

Is there a limit on how much tax you can pay and earn points on via CC?

Cheers,
Pete

Can't get a better earn rate than that (1ppd) for QF. For VA there is Virgin High Flyer at 1.25ppd and for VA/SQ/etc? there is Citibank Select at 1.33ppd.

No ATO limit, as long as you pay it in maximum lots of $50,000. So you could pay a $200k tax bill with four payments, in about 10 minutes.

Your credit card company may have a cap on the number of points you can earn, and some, such as Amex, only give you 1/2 point per $ when paying ATO...

I use Citibank Select (uncapped) for personal ATO and Citibusiness (250k points / $200k spend per annun @ 1.25 pts/$) for my business ATO payments.

Hope this helps.

Cheers for the input guys! I'm focusing on Qantas FF at the moment, perhaps I'll diversify later. =)

How large...? Hint: if its too big for a personal spend, then be careful if using a personal card

Around 90k ish. What is to be wary of? Do the CC companies veto the points or something?

This amount is a lot higher than my CC limit, but I planned on loading the card up with cash and then paying the ATO.

Does anyone know if the Macquaire card earns points for ATO payments? I was planning on shutting down the Qantas card to avoid their annual fee. [Edit : Looks like a no, apparently it excludes "GST and Government charges" =(]

Cheers,
Pete

Um, really the best thing to do is read the whole thread. Sorry, but there is an enormous amount of accumulated knowledge herein and it cannot be passed on in a few replies to your post ;)

(feed a man to fish and all of that)

edit to add: or "teach" but I'm sure you get the drift

Feeding men to fish! You're so evil!

I know there's a lot more then can be conveyed easily but I appreciate the helpful responses I have received. =)

yes, I have half corrected it, but left it intact because it was amusing

Paying my personal tax has to count as personal use surely?

I have been allowed to put my small business GST / PAYG on a $1 per point personal master card which can easily be had for an <$100 annual fee ;), they have shown no concern of me putting sums of $10k & $15k amounts on their card towards the ATO, however I also put lots of transactions on that card as well (at least a hundred or so per month)

Hint is, slowly slowly and make sure there is lots of other spend on the card to hide it a little and you should be fine

Pre pay tax on months prior to when its due will help if using a personal card...

Yes, sure does - personal tax is personal use. Some people come here hoping to pay company tax on personal cards, which usually works, but if they choose to enforce their T&C then some could be in trouble.

OTOH, how do the CC companies know what you are paying to the ATO? Could be personal, could be business...

Sounds like you are all ok to go.
