Why couldn't we bowl any.

CricViz has an India win at 71% and draw at 29%.

Median prediction has Australia getting to 185 in he 3rd session, with India chasing it down.

Seems on the optimistic side from an Australian perspective. But I'd be happy to be surprised.

The only way AUST will be batting last is if India push past 600 and we get rolled on a deteriorating pitch for less than 150.

Take a bow...

I see Aus bowled out before lunch with Smith remaining not out. This is almost identical to one of the Eng vs Ind Tests.

India were intent on batting as long as possible and only playing shots on loose balls. David Warner and co could learn something from that strategy.

No prizes for fast run rates.

Some words from Cricinfo. Play starts shortly. Let's hope we have some entertainment until at least 10pm tonight (EDST).

The last time Australia batted out a draw was in 2011, but that match was played at SSC in Colombo, on a pitch that even Sri Lanka played three quicks.

If you are to find a proper back-to-the-walls, over-their-dead-bodies gutsed-out draw, you have to go as far back as the 2005 Ashes for that epic in Manchester

Let's get to the pitch now. Ravi Shastri says that as expected it is a minefield for Jadeja bowling to left-hand batsmen, but he also says there is enough deterioration now for batting to be really difficult

sport is not just about foregone conclusions based on past events. If legends are to be made, they have to start somewhere. If Australia have a little more chance than cinder in snow, it is because of one man, Steven Smith.

I'm almost  to say I got it (half) right so far :o.

Will be a long day out in the middle today for the batsmen. Smith, Renshaw, Handscomb, Maxwell & Wade can be heroes (I'm discounting Marsh and the bowlers because I honest don't think they can). Well, Marsh would need to channel his 1st innings at Bengaluru or his innings against India A:

Hope they were in the ice baths for a long time last night....

Get ready folks. It is going to be a cauldron out there. There is not going to be any breathing space. Ashwin and Jadeja will rattle off quick overs, Umesh and Ishant will draw variable bounce, at the semblance of a partnership Jadeja will go over the wicket and choke the runs, the short legs and silly points will on such a high that everything will stick, and the pitch will play its fifth-day tricks. This is how such situations pan out against India in India. The only way out - and I don't use these words lightly because I love a good old dig-in - will be to keep scoring runs and somehow get in the lead
Out walk Smith and Renshaw. India in their huddle. They can sense a great win

I'll be glued to this Cricinfo tab as I work this afternoon...

Warner is a good batsman but shouldn't be opening but rather at 5 or 6.

With Indian pitches the batsman that does not try and force the pace tends to be rewarded more.

India win at home in part as they stack their 11 with depth in batting and let time work for them and against their opponents.

In this series the Aussies have adjusted much better than they have in the past. However Warner is stil batting like he does in Australia and the selectors have not taken enough notice of the need for a strong batting lineup..guy that probably should have
Having so many left hand batsman does not help. Unfortunately Usman the played is also a lefty.

Patience is what we need now. Patience to not force the pace when batting.

Yep, to quote one of the cricinfo commentator:

Australia easily have enough batting talent to draw this match. This becomes more about attitude and mental application than anything. it's mainly about technique. These are times when your technique saves you. Warner showed poor technique last night: neither forward, nor back

Renshaw looking a little unsure, Smith less so:

8.6
Yadav to Smith, FOUR, driven on the up. Gets close to a wide length ball, Smith opens the face slightly, and Vijay dives over it at cover

Nice to see Smith and Renshaw weathering the early "rolled" wicket and Smith punishing the odd ball:

24.5
Sharma to Smith, FOUR, tires the surprise straight ball but Smith is only pleasantly surprised. He likes it, and clips it through midwicket for four. Deficit under 100 now

2/58, Smith 20, Renshaw 16

The draw had risen to a 50.1% favourite on CricViz till that ball stayed low.

Back to India win at 57% now with median being Australia making 248

Oh dear... Think this might be over quickly now. We've had a habit of losing clumps

Yes really needed Smith to bat most of the day.

India might not even have to bat again now.

PS: Yikes brain fade by Smith...never looks good leaving a ball to be then be clean bowled!

Minimum 68 overs remain and 4 wickets down. What's the weather like?
