Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

A 5 hour exposure time in setting like that was initially very concerning news, and so I am most glad that it turned out to be incorrect.

Exactly, it is great news.

The person is likely a cleaner or security staff, unlikely a passenger would have had to wait that long for a domestic flight, and if a worker at one of the food outlets they would have stated the store i.e. McDonalds or Nandos etc.

Yes I thought last night that they must have been a cleaner or security guard as otherwise they would have named the outlet as they did in Melbourne. ie Cleaners regularly clean in food courts.

But anyway great news that what ever their role is that they were not in the public area with passing foot traffic who would then have jetted off around Australia far and wide, as well as in Sydney.

And unrelated another cafe flouting restrictions has been shut down

Police charge cafe owners over 'irresponsible' refusal to wear face masks

The owners of an organic cafe in a locked-down New South Wales community have been arrested and charged with refusing to comply with public health orders.

Key points:

  • The owners of a Shellharbour cafe have been charged with refusing to impose mandatory mask wearing inside their venue
  • Police say staff and the owners of the Village Fix cafe were not wearing masks on the weekend and again on Monday
  • As part of their strict bail conditions they must follow public health order

All the news sites reporting on what national cabinet is discussing tonight. Not one mentioning national lockdown which is good.

Sounds like a bit of a yawn fest so far if you believe the ‘leaks’
Agreed. It's the leak to manage expectations. Mandatory vaccination for aged care workers is a significant effort which is going to cause some grief to the industry. Necessary yes, easy to implement no. Hence the elongated discussion.

I had a LDH booking in August 2020 that was cancelled and rescheduled to May this year. There were specific orders issued for Lord Howe Island due to the remoteness of the island and high risk if there is spread, requiring air ambulance evacuation.
Hopefully not a dumb question, but how does rescheduling work out for all of this? For instance, I booked my hotels via Hotels.com and the rate is non-refundable. I'm guessing if the restrictions remain in place I should be able to get a refund given this situation is out of my control? Similarly, for my reward flight to LDH can QF simply move me to another date without any change fees or differential in points/fees (I "purchased" the reward tickets back when QF was running the 30% off promo for domestic reward bookings).

As much as it pains me to say it -
This is a second order issue compared to vaccinations and mandatory testing of everyone connected to the international border.

So that’s a .0003% positivity rate. Most international “outbreaks” have seen positivity rates of over 20%.
The quickest rate to get to a positivity rate of 20% is to pretend that a .0003% positivity rate means nothing, just ask Melbourne!

Our experience was that this was a bit of a PITA. The best option was to call both the hotel direct and then QF. From a hotel perspective we paid a supplement to the property to change the date, so from Booking.com perspective, we stayed in August, even though we delayed for 9 months that was arranged direct.

QF were understanding as we booked on the points plane bookings for Aug 2020. You need to have options from your property then call QF and ask if they can get some seats released for you under extenuating circumstances.

Good luck but we did get it to work. Be flexible is the trick. Try to keep the duration the same as well.

You are quite right! If more people were vaccinated, particularly returning travellers and those working in the airports and quarantine system, all of this lockdown and mask-wearing nonsense would've been a thing of the past months ago. In particular, I bring to your attention a tidbit from the NSW Health press conference from earlier today where the Premier mentioned in the West Hoxton superspreader event of the 30 people who attended, 24 were infected. What do you think the 6 who weren't infected had in common? They all got their jab, with 5 being fully vaxed and one receiving their first short. Anyone saying that vaccination isn't our way out of this mess needs to look at the data, there is reason why Europe has reopened their borders to international travel, why Canadians are allowed to return home without having to quarantine, etc.

In terms of second-order issues, I would like to bring to the attention a group of NSW kids who hired a private jet to fly to SA to skip the border checkpoint. Hopefully they throw the book at 'em!

No, not really. Certainly not saying it “means nothing”, it’s in fact a very good result.

Amazing how there only seems to be the “all or nothing” mentality from some 🙄

Fingers crossed that we can nip this outbreak in the bud. Then again, I had travel booked last December for PER and that got cancelled thanks to that small outbreak. At this point booking anything seems to be a roll of the dice. But I don't mind rolling it as I managed to travel to DRW in April (to gain QF Gold status via status match) plus BNE last month for OzFest. Sure beats looking out the same window in SYD every day :p

ABC reports: Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has also flagged she wants to look at temporarily lowering the international passenger caps again.
It is about time she gets off the political soap box, she has been re elected for a few more years so her job and Govt pay rises have been secured. If all our politicians use covid as an election platform we will be in a state of snap lock down for ever and day.

Who else watched the PM's press conference and was left feeling utterly depressed?

Seemed to indicate we'll be in this situation for years with little scope for improvement.

Have to remind myself of the normality other countries are already returning to.

A Sydney cafe has made international news for this hilariously true letter posted in their window, from the Sydney lockdown 😂
And is there is something is wrong with this :p. Our PM is in the 4% who has been vaccinated, traveled to the UK for a work conference he was not a part of, went off on an family tree discovery and met up with some Aussies who cannot get home. Makes perfect sense to me ;):rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: An Aussie saying it as he/ she sees it.

Does anyone on this forum honestly believe QF and VA will survive several more years of flights being cancelled? I'd encourage the PM to talk to the flight attendants and pilots based in Australia and abroad who proudly connect Ozzies to the world and ask them how it feels to be cancelled? What about the many tour operators who have invested heavily in the past several years to serve a growing, international clientele? This is to say nothing of the countless businesses that have been cancelled (albeit temporarily) due to these snap lockdowns.

Yes we need to aim for COVID zero, but we also need to do so without shuttering the tourism sector either. Whilst we are not like SIN and have a domestic travel market, as we have seen in this outbreak those borders can close rapidly and create uncertainty for those wanting to plan future trips domestically. Vaccines are the way out of this mess and it still bothers me how very little work has been done on this front.
