Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Note that while no one likes to see 80 cases, that in terms of numbers for infectious in the community cases that 22 and 23 August had higher numbers. So both those days were worse in terms of virus spread risk.

And August 19 and 24 were just slightly less.

Looking at the breakdown, it fairly likely that there was a larger batch of Day 13 Quarantine tests in today's numbers.

Note that some cases have now been removed from Aug 23 and 24 and so presumably there were some false positives on those days.

Sums it up pretty well..

At the moment in Victoria any number than about 5 is going to mean one thing - no opening up and a continuation of the ongoing lockdown.

Feel free @ayebee - it’s a pretty old fashioned word that I learnt from my grandfather in the 1960s. And it is very descriptive!

“a very minor problem - not the end of the world, but the world would be better without it.”

Sounds like we were in Japan at the same time - we were there from third week of January 2020 until 14 February and originally planned t9 come home via Shanghai 😱😱. I always buy masks at the convenience store at the airport whilst we wait for the JR office t9 open to validate JR passes or wait for the bus to the ski field. So we were lucky to have a stock on hand before things got out of hand later as the COVID progressed. We watched news footage of the Diamond Princess alongside at Yokohama - we were all so naive about it all back then.

diverging a bit from the main topic here ... maybe we should start a thread for planning and reminiscing ski holidays.
we arrived Haneda 31 January and needed a quick connection to Chitose, arriving there late. Looked at every shop in the airport and no masks available.
We had a week at Rusutsu, overnight in Sapporo for the ice sculptures, a week in Hakuba (very poor snow), and a week in Kyoto.
Kyoto was blissfully uncrowded. Particularly noticeable there were no Chinese tourists.
Arrived back in Oz 22 Feb.

Great idea for a thread @ayebee! Do you want to start it or will I?

Well I think many of us were concerned about the "Extinction" (should really have been called the "Explode the Cases" ) protests last Saturday and its potential to spike more cases from about +30 hours on.

Whether it is a coincidence or not is unknown, but "unlinked" cases have gone up somewhat in that window. Plus they have been more scattered.

Queensland is building the Wellcamp Quarantine facility unilaterally, without federal support.

Do we need all this extra capacity next year once 80% has been reached and the major markets (US/UK) are in travel bubbles with us? Well, if they're paying, go nuts I guess.

That's why the fed's didn't build quarantine straight away, very well may be massive white elephant.

They may use it for high risk country arrivals or for people to isolate if testing positive to replace medi-hotels/special health accommodation.

All these quarantine facilities are going to be pretty useless once cases leak through the border.

Victoria has essentially been in lockdown for most of the past 2 months and daily case numbers either hover at best, or sadly increase.

These facilities might have made sense at the start of the year or even a few months ago, but surely they're going to be a massive white elephant. Australia will be 80% double vaccinated before this facility is even opened.
Not sure who will quarantine in Toowoomba as the Feds said it was too far from the Int'l airport and hospitals. Only reason why they are building one near BNE. Will this be for interstaters considering Qld still wants Covid zero haha.

Does the PM know? "He does now"
What if they don't approve it? "Build it and they will come".
What if they don't?

So a bit of a risky move. The federal government will want their facility used first, and hopefully not need the second.

She thinks tourists won't mind paying for 2 weeks quarantine.

Queensland Dongas are for Queenslanders 😂

So other than haircuts what are views on what else might be relaxed for fully vaccinated?

My parents would be super happy if they could get a haircut, they have short cuts (no colour or treatments) and are generally in and out in 15mins and would happily wear a mask as previously.

However, they need to give an option for fully vaccinated friends and family to get together, outdoor dining would be the easiest. Has benefit of improved mental health and opening more of the economy.

It is possible that the incentives will be different in metro and regional and even between LGAs based on case numbers and vaccination percentages.

Physios and chiros are open now. I’ve seen both in the last 2 weeks

And dentists are also open, yet the myth that they arent persists on this thread.

About time. Should have been built when first suggested. Feds have failed completely on providing quarantine facilities as is their responsibility. Good to see someone stepping up to the plate and building this.

IMHO: Quarantine facilities will be needed for years to come.

I think we’re going to need quarantine facilities for the next couple of years if not longer. I think it’s most likely we end up with some form of traffic light system for travel and the red list means you can come but you have to go to quarantine first. (I also assume hotels will want to go back to being hotels at some point).

of course a more cynical reading might be that building quarantine camps might make for a self fulfilling prophecy rather than a white elephant, we built them so we might as well use them.

1029. Statewide lockdown extended for 2 weeks.

No haircuts, but outdoor gatherings for 5 people outside the areas of concern, areas of concern get one hour of recreation in addition to exercise.

The site was rejected for a multitude of reasons. As the PM just said, the Premier has had the ability to build and fund that facility with state funding since it was first mooted. But they went sniffing for Commonwealth money instead.

I suspect this is a sideshow to distract from the disaster of hotel quarantine that the state has overseen.
