Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Interesting watching Andrews and Berejiklian side to side. There’s clearly a sense of optimism in NSW which will flow through to the public. This is helping NSW accept that “cases” happen and as do deaths. Andrews seems to be sticking with his somber approach. Might be time for a shift in Victoria’s messaging.
This is an example of optimistic messaging:

From the ABC: Andrews to hold a meeting with the PM tonight

"I’ve got a meeting with the Prime Minister tonight to talk about what does the whole passport thing look like. What does an economy for the vaccinated look like? Once we’ve avoided a catostrophic pandemic of the unvaccinated at scale?"

Is this some sort of joke? They are only now starting to have discussions on covid passports and what a vaccinated economy looks like

I have heard of some instances of multi-generational family disagreements, some vaccinating and some not. I guess some family gatherings won't quite be whole.
It'll be a tricky one, that - given how hard it would be to police it in the first place (home gatherings), I suspect that they will just open this one up for all at whatever point. Maybe that's 80%, maybe sooner.

The restrictions that are more readily enforced, will be those like getting into venues without your QR code lighting up a green tick on both yours, and the venue's check-in screen.

It is shifting, but it has to be really carefully managed - that's how the Victorian government do things. Not a criticism, but it is how it's done down here. Brett Sutton said "my advice has changed...it's a recognition that things have changed with Delta"

We got there in the end, and the stories of the lockdowns north of the border being lacking, or compliance being poor, are finally behind us.

Get vaccinated.
Its day 1. Need to go through the stages of depression - give it a few more days and when Vic hits 60% or 65% first dose, seeing first dose appointment bookings way in advance, then some optimism might creep in.

There’s a working group of NatCab asked to work on this - Vic, Tas and NT if I remember correctly.

The Morrison government did a great job securing vaccine
Truly I think there is certainly some blame for the Gov.

However how the information about AZ was pushed around by media / socialmedia I think should not be understated. The ability to produce a very good vaccine that the vast majority of my friends in the UK took was an absolute GIFT to Australians and it was (arguably still is being) squandered.

It's very easy to point blame upwards but nearly every death in NSW in the last 2 months could have had 2 shots of Astrazenca quite some time ago. I dont mean that to sound cold.

The NSW Premier said today that picnics outdoors, or family dinners in restaurants could be allowed before visits to other people's homes. The reason being that it is fairly safe in the open, and there will be QR codes at clubs/restaurants, but hard to have the equivalent in homes.

Not really - if NSW is now pulling the brakes off at 80% (ie letting unvaccinated out at 80%), Vic will need some insight as to whether Vic can hold off longer or not. Of course there won;t be a direct answer from the PM, but the PM/Treassurer indicating how long financial assistance will be there for, will give some guide.

I know the national plan is there, but getting way above 80% is better than being just at 80%.

One can never take for granted that once unvaccinated are released - vaccine appointments won't start getting cancelled unless you are in some mandatory class of worker that must have a vaccine.

I've read some US articles where vaccinated parents of kids have unvaccinated relatives who eventually get covid and pass it on to their own kids. So I'm guessing this might be the type of personal issue for some that I've spoken to. eg Family restaurant dinner won't be covid-safe when everyone is at the same table sitting next to each other. Its going to be problematic.

And don't forget those choosing to not get vaccinated will be quite righteous about it. Imagine the righteous indignity for not getting an invite to a family gathering - family whatsapp groups etc blowing up

It's more carefully managed wording. These discussion would've been happening at the lower levels and the detail is probably already worked out. I would suggest this is more of a discussion about the when, and the where in terms of what other state leaders are saying.

More of these sideline chats are probably a good idea and a place where the PM could likely have a significant role to play. It is pretty clear that National Cabinet is useless at decision making - time for a different approach.

Crossed my mind today as well. No problem with that, it will also gain momentum for the economic recovery ahead.

It has been publicly stated for a while now that the Vic Gov supports, and was actively working towards, the National Plan to transition Australia’s National COVID-19 Response which it helped draft. The living with covid plan. So that has not changed, as it was already the agreed plan and the direction.

ie Progressively opening up at 70% and then further so at 80% (adults fully vaxxed) and then further again beyond that at Stage D. The caveat being that hopitilastions etc have to remain under control.

What changed today was accepting that cases would not now get back to zero, or very low, again everywhere in Victoria before the 70% fully vaxxed adult level. So sadly that means more restrictions for longer till the 70% level is reached in order to keep hospitalisations etc at acceptable levels. Then progressively less and less restrictions over time. At this stage it looks like apart from Shepparton and Greater Melbourne the state wide lockdown will end, or at least pause, next week. Shepparton most likely not longer after.

The National Plan to transition Australia’s National COVID-19 Response remains what Vic is working towards. It is just going to be more painful getting to the 70% and 80% activation now that we would all have liked.

However yes individual tactics will still be used from state to state. Though who knows what WA will do.

To be fair it’s a journey and you need to adjust your language to where you are at on that journey in bringing the public on the journey. So you really need to be comparing Dan to what Gladys was saying a month ago, not what she is saying now.

On that measure yes, Dan is a bit behind but somewhat less than if you are comparing both as at today.

There was a sub committee set up at National Cabinet to look into this, involving VIC, TAS & NT.

I would assume this meeting is Dan Andrews back briefing the PM on the findings prior to National Cabinet on Friday.

Sorry, but I cannot imagine such righteous indignation in my family - they are all on board with saving their and our lives by being vaxxed.

Morrison doesn’t want to have that discussion because he knows the only way to get it through the parliament is with labour support and some of the headbangers may be willing to torpedo the government and force an early election over it.

Politics getting in the way of sensible solutions. (And in the way of systems we can link with other countries)

Not in my family, but I can certainly imagine righteous indignation - happens quite often in public, youtube, protests ...

It’s not cold. It’s just a fact. When people drive 160 km/h on the pacific highway and fly into a tree, we quite rightly say that they contributed to their own death. Not getting vaccinated, when eligible, in the middle of a global pandemic is no different.

The difference is that we don’t have politicians expressing their sadness at the tragedy of the vehicle death in daily press conferences.
