Pressers go to town on this stuff at the moment. As a former commissioned ARA Officer the words 'no-fly zone' has a very different meaning to me. As far as I am aware SLMs and SMTs are not a big or credible threat in AU.COVID has turned the world upside down but even so hearing the words Melbourne and no-fly zone in the same sentence marks a new level of surrealism.

Oh it’s going to be much bigger than that
I don't know. In this country, often trials are like formalities that have to be done when the actual decision has already been made. Kind of like the charades of opening up internal job applications when the higher ups have already decided on an external person.Well I guess the aim of any trial is to test things before expanding.
I am not in Vic but what is going on there? Has Dan shutdown construction because there was an unauthorised protest? Or because the protest got out of hand? Or because of health orders - most weren’t masked? Perhaps someone in Vic can explain.
Does the punishment fit the crime? Would he have shutdown public transport for 2 weeks if the protesters had been train drivers? Or closed grocery shops if they were Coles or Woollies workers? This does not seem anyway to run a state.
Just asking. No doubt I will be flamed.
Excellent summation. ThanksThe construction industry was not shut down due to the protest that escalated on that day. The wheels were already in motion.
The initial recommendation to close the construction industry was put up to the Vic Gov before the worst of protest had occurred.
The day prior the Vic Government, Unions and major employers were all in discussions about various measures including possibly shutting the construction industry down and word had got out.
The shutdown was due to cases rising and spreading through constructions sites and then out into the community and regions, that many sites have workers/suppliers coming and going (Unlike an abattoir where you mainly have the one workforce) a lack of compliance and seemingly little will to change and evidently insufficient momentum on getting vaccinated which was a requirement that had recently been adopted due to the previously mentioned factors.
Note too that it was the whole construction industry that was closed. Large projects and civil sites tend to be very unionised, whereas domestic construction sites are largely not unionised at all. Spread had been happening through all types of construction sites/projects.
With the protesters there seems to be a significant % who are not actually construction workers.
Of note too is that the the initial main protest that escalated was against the CFMEU, in part a minority of its own members but also from many who have been agitating at the the various protests for some time.
The CFMEU represents over 30,000 construction workers in both Vic and Tas. So of the 300,000 odd construction workers in Vic they only represent a slice. And of that slice it is a minority who are agitating.
One suspects too that the current turmoil is just not about construction workers being required to get vaccinated, but also that some internal power jostling within the CFMEU is occurring.
Building worker sacked, allegedly under union pressure, for attending protest
A building worker has said the construction union pressured his employer to sack him after he attended Monday’s violent protest at the union’s office.www.theage.com.au
The CFMEU has always been shall we say a colorful union with factions and often militant actions.
Decades back I went to their offices for a meeting on implementing improved construction techniques and safety practices on new construction methods/materials that were at that time becoming dominant on building constructions sites in Australia. As I arrived a blacked out vehicle arrived, two guys jumped out waving baseball bats at someone else accessing the building before speeding off.
We purchased an off plan apartment where the CFMEU placed the Eureka flag on all the buildings during construction. Our block was the first of three to be completed and settled, meaning I had access while the others were still under construction. Must have been the first person to visit it because as I drove up the new road I was told to stop and leave. By a group of burly workers. I said I had a legal right to enter and they could not stop me. Damn, they thought. She isn't scared of us. And I continued driving through. Slowly. Next thing the foreman arrived and said the same. I showed my keys and suggested he let me through before I called the police. He made some phone calls while I parked and got out of my car to enter. He didn't stop me again. The construction industry was not shut down due to the protest that escalated on that day. The wheels were already in motion.

I still feel the testing numbers are a bit low in Vic given the number of infections.
Its got nothing to do with schools really and as such the school trial is not really a ‘trial’ for broader use. Anyway I can’t say anything more I’ll get in trouble . Very soon will be announced.
It’s so distressing to watch what is currently happening in our city including ’protesters’ now interfering with health workers vaccinating vulnerable people in CBD ie asylum seekers/homeless. They have closed that facility until Monday. I’m actually feeling quite tearful and can’t watch any more….We purchased an off plan apartment where the CFMEU placed the Eureka flag on all the buildings during construction. SA health just making sure everyone knows they are still in the game.SA Health is going into overdrive with the latest transport worker who crossed SA into WA declaring people visiting Level 1 must quarantine with their families for 14 days. All remote sites. WA on the other hand, consider it a low risk even though they were there for longer.
Well WA could hardly compare it high risk with a football game to be played there this weekend,SA Health is going into overdrive with the latest transport worker who crossed SA into WA declaring people visiting Level 1 must quarantine with their families for 14 days. All remote sites. WA on the other hand, consider it a low risk even though they were there for longer.
