Why no “Nu” or “Xi”?

Been reported widely that Nu could too easily be confused with New and that Xi was avoided for political reasons given the name of the leader of the world's most populous country (not even pronounced the same).

What you do do see is that most of the previous variants became a non event.

The AMA is not really the Doctor's Union anymore.more a quasi political society.
They are not the cause of doctor shortages. That honour belongs to some of our Royal Colleges, lack of Government foresight and incompetent health bureaucracies.

I pay next to no heed of their utterances but the local medical societies are valuable in getting to know all your area colleagues.
Not a member but I would guess aside from the politics they are looking to serve their members interests by ensuring that usual hospital business such as elective operations/procedures carry on as uninterrupted by covid as possible. Personal experience of (Sydney) colleagues is that most are pragmatic about reopening

Omicron is out the bottle
There have been 12 previous variants of interest/concerns (plus the related subvariants. No previous variant has been kept in the bottle. Assume all Covid has been circulating before it was detected.

The other important feature of O is that it is occurring in areas with very low vaccinations. South Africa probably only 25% 2Jab.

Today's coronacast covered it quite well: Hello Omicron. Goodbye Delta?

Yes - I read that too!
It is an indictment of the times we live in that even the Greek alphabet can be politicised despite merely being used to serially name evolving viral variants☹️ When the last letter is reached a certain watch company may have to sue for copyright infringement…

If only Mary McLaws would follow suit
She's not the worst but I think maybe she has taken over from Raina who seems to have fallen off the radar. They seem to be using another woman in Melb - I'm awful with names - and she too is currently taking a more considered approach.

Hopefully the more balanced approach becomes the dominant strain, displacing the doomer variant.

No Raina was on ABC again last night blathering on, negatively as usual.

The "expert" with the most balanced commentary yesterday seemed to be Catherine Bennett, Swan seemed to be taking his lead from her.

This is why we don't watch ABC after 7.15 pm.

Ah it was Catherine Bennett I was referring to and who makes a lot of sense.

The person I take heed of is Prof.Peter Collignon a real clinical expert. However he is far too optimistic so the media dropped him early on. I follow him on Twitter.
He is interviewed a couple of times a week in Adelaide. Excellent. I suspect he's done a lot to influence older South Aussies to get vaccinated.

I uninstalled that vile app. My mental health took an immediate turn for the better I think.

Being optimistic is akin to a crime both in the broadcast media in this country and social media too. I sometimes wonder if there is a big agenda at play here, mostly because surely most don't but this rubbish shoved in to their eyeballs...

He’s had a few doozies including “covid isn’t airborne” from February this year. C505CA44-5426-47D8-AD4D-FBEDA290FA9B.jpeg

I think there was a unconscious cognitive bias going on. We had unsatisfactory PPE and quarantine with iffy ventilation. Gives one a tendency to believe theories which suit one's circumstances. Collignon was with the majority on this at the time

PS Interestingly Renato was less wrong than we thought at the time (though my own disagreement with him was to do with flouting restrictions that interfered with his activities)

Reactions: tgh
Collignon was saying that Rona could also be transmitted through touching contaminated surfaces rather than predominant aerosol. At that time it was thought to be predominantly droplets - basically same transmission as influenza and other respiratory illnesses.

Even now places undergo “deep clean” if a Covid outbreak occurred.
And along with mask mandates and social distancing, these 3 policies really only mitigate the droplet theory. If aerosol only, then who could possibly think that hotel quarantine is a viable quarantine method?

The HongKong SARS apartment building superspreader event could only have been an aerosol event because patient zero was not living on the top floor. And increasingly influenza is thought to have aerosol transmission as well.

Science is about being skeptical rather than blindly/dutifully following the consensus - which is what I believe Collignon was doing.
