Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

If 700 is even remotely close then maybe it’s rampant through nursing homes? Many of them. The issue with Princess Cruises was that they were swapping crew around during the outset as per normal practise. And nursing homes have repeated this trend with staff it seems. Even after Newmarch.

Society is soft on these folks and they will probably get away scot free.
There is a glaring source of Covid spread across Au ...but I am not permitted to utter it…..
I don’t think so. AP is furious. Sydney Siders will be furious. And they travelled on a flight from Syd likely positive.

There almost needs a Federal law where it occurs across boundaries.

The collective “we” will be lucky to get this virus under control with movements as high as this:

“ More than 600,000 people have crossed NSW-Victoria border since closure
By Mary Ward
More than 600,000 people have crossed the NSW-Victoria border since it was closed on July 8.

In a statement this morning, NSW Police said they had issued just three Penalty Infringement Notices for breaching public health orders at the border.”

Just one person has been charged at the border: a 34-year-old Barnawartha man who allegedly attempted to cross the NSW/Victoria border near Corowa without a valid permit on July 8.

“Another person has been charged after breaching the restrictions: COVID-19 conspiracy theorist Simeon Cassar who allegedly left locked-down Melbourne and crossed the NSW border blockade to protest the border closures in Canberra, where he was arrested and charged earlier this month”.

And, another idiot:

“ Victoria Police have caught a man driving 100km/h over the speed limit on Melbourne's fringe as he attempted to avoid a lockdown checkpoint.

In a statement, Victoria Police said a Holden Commodore was spotted heading towards the city on the Princes Freeway travelling at 110km/h and in a 100 km/h zone about 2am this morning.

The car then accelerated as it approached the checkpoint.

"The car drove past police and sped up to 200km/h," the statement said.”

I flew into BNE on Friday from SYD.
The process is as you describe. There was no checking of my mobile phone though and did not see any of the other passengers having theirs checked.
Thanks PF.That makes it more curious.it is said they travelled under assumed names so how did that tally with their ID.If they didn't have ID surely a bit more checking should have been done.If it turns out they have fake ID as well then I am sure the police will be looking long and hard at their escapades. They appear to have gone to a lot of businesses in their 8 days since arrival.how is that financed?

I guess they probably state they came from Sydney, not Melbourne. That was the definite lie.

edit: a line from news.com.au article

On Wednesday night, the teens were issued with a hefty fine after allegedly lying to authorities about where they had been and failing to quarantine.

With such large numbers wish it was broken down into aged care vs non aged care so we can understand community transition better.
I think yesterday the Vic CHO indicated community transmission was about 55 Per day.

edit from yesterday’s abc Covid blog 12:39 (noting community transmission is defined as acquisition and source unknown)

Community transmission in Victoria roughly 50 per day

Brett Sutton:

About 50 community transmission cases each day. Now, that doesn't sound like a lot, but we were at a point a month or so ago where we had single figures for community transmission, so that ongoing, you know, tireless work to follow them up on their close contacts needs to continue.

They manage to apparently shop lift handbags from high end boutiques with security everywhere then they can access fake ID. I suspect we are looking at organised crime here and not two teens going shopping.

Indeed. So they are really stupid. If they had been honest and done their quarantine it would have cost them less than the fines and their nefarious activities would have gone undiscovered.
PS-The Australian reports that police have now seized their phones.

Maybe they don't want the general public to know community transfer (easily) that to make sure they are suitably scared to follow restrictions....?

Though if the number is that high its probably pointing to a much sadder tale in aged care.

Three women, not two, involved in returning to BNE from MEL. On-going police investigation.

" Queensland's Deputy Police Commissioner says three women returned to Queensland from Victoria and are involved in an ongoing police investigation with one of the women now fined and two of them testing positive for coronavirus …"

I’m surprised there were no checks in Sydney when the plane arrived from Melbourne.
Sounds like there was some organising behind it as 2 19 year olds wouldn’t be that clever.

723 ouch

Queensland records three new coronavirus cases

There are three new COVID-19 cases in Queensland overnight, but none are connected to the two teenagers who returned to Brisbane from Melbourne and sparked a public health alert on Wednesday after they tested positive.

Queensland Deputy Premier & Health Minister Steven Miles said a man aged in his 20s returned from the United States and has tested positive for COVID-19 in hotel quarantine.

The other two new cases are a Brisbane couple who ate at The Apollo Restaurant in Potts Point in Sydney. The venue has been identified as a known virus hotspot.

You mean the unofficial number that hasn't even been released by authorities yet?

In Singapore recently they flushed out a government worker who was leaking numbers to the press before the relevant agencies could by giving them BS numbers. I hope the Victorian govt do the same. No value added by leaking numbers without context to get views. I hope whoever keeps doing it loses their job, it is highly inappropriate for a public servant to leak privileged information without qualification.

Inmate at Sydney jail tests positive for COVID-19 as spread continues

A jail in Sydney's north-west has been placed in lockdown after an inmate tested positive for COVID-19.

The inmate arrived at Parklea Correctional Centre on July 26 after he was refused bail for driving offences.

"Preliminary contact tracing with staff and inmates has confirmed the inmate has not had any close contacts in custody, on being transported, or at Parklea Correctional Centre since his arrival, in accordance with the isolation protocols," a Corrective Services NSW spokesperson said.

To get a picture of Victoria as at yesterday

In Victoria at the current time:
  • 1418 cases may indicate community transmission
  • 4839 cases are currently active in Victoria
  • 307 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including 41 in intensive care
  • 4123 people have recovered from the virus
  • Of the total cases, 8632 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 500 are from regional Victoria
  • Total cases include 4625 men and 4593 women
  • More than 1,554,000 tests have been processed
  • Total number of healthcare workers: 884, active cases: 502
  • There are 804 active cases relating to outbreaks across aged care facilities

The only hope is that it’s reflective of the record number of tests 4 days ago (26/7) .........but I think unlikely........sigh.
I think I heard 45k tests

Apparently one of the positive cases in QLD is refusing to cooperate with contact tracers and won’t reveal their whereabouts and contacts over the previous 8 days.
Surely they go into the slammer until they cooperate

One of the Qld women is refusing to provide details of her travel in Brisbane since returning.

Unbelievable.
