Qld reports 3 new cases - one lives at Forest Lake, 2 live at the Gold Coast - linked to Corrections training centre / Academy, which in turn is linked to the youth detention centre cluster.

effectively schoolies is cancelled - no organised events

restrictions are getting extendedthrough Logan etc down to Gold Coast (eg aged case, hospital, disability, non-covidsafe plan gathering limits).
Queensland now looks very similar to NSW.

I empathise with your worry, but at the moment it’s 20 active cases in Qld.

Nsw had 20 new cases per day at some stages, and the superspreader at Crossroad.

re-introduced Qld restrictions feel much different to NSW

its too early yet to say it’s similar.

Unborn baby dies after mum refused entry to Qld

A NSW mother is grieving the loss of her unborn child after she was refused entry to to Queensland to receive emergency surgery.
The mum, who is based in Ballina, was forced to fly to Sydney to recieve emergency treatment for her unborn twins after not being granted an emergency exemption to seek treatment in Brisbane.
Allan Watt, the father of the woman, told The Courier Mail his daughter had to wait 16 hours before she could get a care flight to Sydney and then another "six or seven" hours before the emergency surgery.
“They found out yesterday and went for a scan and the baby was deceased," Mr Watt told the publication.
“I’m not blaming the Health System in Queensland, the same thing could’ve happened if they could’ve gone to the Brisbane Hospital with what’s happened to them now, but the fact is it could have made a difference.”
The tragic news comes more than a week after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk was criticised for for saying Queensland hospitals were "for our people only" after a question about the NSW woman being refused entry to Brisbane.
"People living in NSW they have NSW hospitals. In Queensland we have Queensland hospitals for our people," she said.

I don't think there is any need to be worried anymore we have to be practical, it appears that community transmission is now bedding itself in SE QLD and do you know what, we just have to buckle down and live it it. Like NSW and soon to be joined by VIC when they emerge from stage 4.

We have multiple strains, several mystery cases and not all can be genomicly linked - which means it is going to bubble away now. But thats ok, we just have to manage it the best we can and operate as safely as possible.

Qld CHO comments this morning following the infant's death was towing the same line - suggesting if you don't have an existing relationship with Doctor in Qld you should seek treatment in your own state - as if in an emergency you have a relationship ahead of time with the treating doctor, an emergency by definition is unexpected and not planned for. I imagine surgeons will skills to operate on babies in utero is a specialty only found in capital cities.

Dr Young neglected to acknowledge that you can drive from Ballina to Brisbane in just over 2 hours, but to get a flight to Sydney CBD added another 14 hour delay. Ballina doesn't have any active cases (whereas Brisbane does) and if the Qld CHO is the only person who grants border exemptions for medical reasons this one sits squarely on her shoulders. Cant see why an ambulance couldn't have transported the woman directly to the hospital in Brisbane - they could have easily had the treating staff where N95 masks etc.

The national rules/definitions for hotspot declaration was meant to be released today - will be interesting if they indicate that the Qld border shouldn't be closed to regional areas.

Absolutely devastating for the poor family.

And unfortunately for Anna a huge wake up call after her ongoing divisive commentary that being populist to try and get yourself elected doesn't make you a real leader.

Our QLD CHO needs to really look at herself hard in the mirror because a lot of this rhetoric we suspect coming from her too.

Wow I just saw their responses....
Unbelievable..... I hope they don't write that on the condolences card to the family.

Ms Palaszczuk said the death was an “absolute tragedy” but she stood by the decision of her health authorities.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said they did not comment on individual cases, but said generally that people should seek medical care in the state where they live.

I am thankful that these new community cases have not be attributed to NSW border breaches, it will hopefully force AP and Dr JY to reexamine the lack of need for closed borders other than to Vic at this time.

hopefully sa and nsw borders open to regional vic Soon beyond the Current bubbles announced....yesterday regional vic was less than 200 active cases I believe, mainly in Geelong, Bendigo and maybe ballarat

From ABC News website:

Breakdown of NSW's figures from today
  • 3,830 total cases in the state
  • 30,2832 tests recorded in the 24-hour reporting period
  • Of the 13 cases, one is a returned traveller in hotel quarantine
  • Six cases are linked to the Sydney CBD cluster
  • Four are locally acquired with their source still under investigation
  • Two are close contacts of previously reported cases which have not been linked to known clusters

Dr Kerry Chant said:
"Further investigations have found that anyone who attended the Sydney Tattersalls club on Monday the 24 August from 8:00am to 2:00pm is now deemed a close contact and must get tested immediately and isolate for 14 days and remain in isolation even if that test comes back as negative. This cluster has grown significantly, and we have received additional cases linked to this cluster overnight."

My God. I've criticised the CMO in Tasmania, but he's a saint compared to the QLD lot. I think Tasmania has a formal agreement (pre COVID) for treatment of Tas patients in Victoria, reflecting a) fewer specialists in Tas and b) a burgeoning waiting list.

EDIT: Ok, it might be a bit more complicated for the NSW-QLD transfer, but obviously it wasn't as straightforward as the QLD authorities now implying, else the case would have gone straight in.

That community transmission (unknown source) should be increasing in today’s figures.

Does Qld get any Federal money for its hospitals? If so, they are for all.

The "I'm right, Jack" attitude that has spread through the various states is appalling.

A Queensland friend is currently holidaying on the mid Qld coast. The images she's been putting up, of total lack of distancing, etc, shows that they are well and truly set up for a big resurgence. I wonder when NSW and Vic will be closing the border in the other direction.

In regional Victoria, 198 active cases as of yesterday. Of these 134 were in five LGA's - Geelong, Bendigo, Mitchell, Shepparton & Moorabool (which lies between Melbourne and Ballarat). Most of the rest within the "commute zone" about 150km around Melbourne - notable exceptions being 6 cases in Warrnambool and 6 in the eastern part of Gippsland (East Gippsland + Wellington shires) and then a few other shires outside the commute zone with 1 each.

NSW total community transmission since before Crossroads is a new high of 32

Some new Phase 2 and 1 alerts in the media release

One of today’s cases attended Anytime Fitness gym in Marrickville on Monday 24 August from 7pm to 8pm. Anyone at the gym at this time is considered a close contact and is required to immediately get tested for COVID-19 and self-isolate for 14 days until 8 September.

People who have attended the following venues are considered casual contacts and advised to monitor for symptoms, and immediately isolate and get tested for COVID-19 should symptoms develop:
  • The Matterhorn, Turramurra - Saturday 22 August 6pm-8pm (NSW Health has identified and contacted close contacts)
  • Parish of Holy Name, Wahroonga - Sunday 23 August 9.30am-10.15am
  • Liquorland, Marrickville - Sunday 23 August 5.15pm-5.30pm
  • Eat Fuh, Marrickville - Sunday 23 August 5.20pm-5.40pm
  • Metro Petroleum - Hurlstone Park - Monday 24 August 10.20am-10.30am
Following diagnosis of COVID-19 in a person who lives in Victoria, two NSW residents are in isolation for 14 days from the date of last contact with this case. Murrumbidgee LHD contacted these two people and are continuing to monitor them while they remain in isolation.

Thanks for the better information/correction.

i was remembering this from yesterday ...lol (original bolding by abc COVID blog)

Regional Victorian numbers are in 'a much better position than a few weeks ago'

There are 3,308 active cases across the state, Premier Daniel Andrews said.

"Those numbers continue to fall, which is good news.

"There are now 198 active cases in regional local government areas under stage three.

"To give you an example, across a number of key regional communities that we've been speaking about, the greater Geelong area has 71 active cases, greater Bendigo, 16, and Ballarat has six active cases.

"That's a much better position than a few weeks ago. Those numbers are falling. But there should be no sense of complacency in those communities or any community."

A case in a Victorian who frequently crossed into NSW as a resident of the Albury-Wodonga border community has brought two NSW residents into self-isolation, Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant told reporters on Friday.

I would say this may delay further easing of restrictions for Vic NSW border communities.

Some comments coming out right now as predicted yesterday which are heartening to hear some leadership finally on this issue:

Scott Morrison is at a bush summit in Cooma discussing border bans, calling on premiers to set aside their differences and come up with workable solutions that allow movement without compromising health.
Morrison invoked federation:

Australia was not built to have internal borders. That was the point of Australia. That was plan A - I’m for plan A. He clarified that he wasn’t calling for “no restrictions” but that restrictions shouldn’t impinge on people moving from one covid-free area to another.

Morrison then issued a warning to state premiers that national cabinet needs to come up with a definition of “hotspot”. This was a plan developed on 21 August, and is clearly a play to show up states like Queensland that have declared jurisdictions with no community transmission (and in the case of the ACT, no active cases) hotspots.

Morrison warned: There will be a commonwealth definition of a hotspot – come rain, hail or shine. I hope it is a national cabinet one.
If national cabinet disagrees, or state definitions vary - the commonwealth definition will force premiers to explain their own policies.
