Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

Yes, TA, somewhat out of his depth on that lockdown claim, it seems.

Maybe better to concentrate on that job he’s chasing in the UK, sitting on the Cheese Board, or whatever it is? 😉

But to be fair he’s not the only one who’s made the claim. In the spirit of AFF ban on political discussion it’s a shame he was mentioned, but nevertheless it seems to be a good analysis in the context of the lockdown discussion. I do believe though the constant harping on it is detrimental to people’s wellbeing.

I know people who are still quite positive and perhaps they are those who have friends and relatives within 9km or so and can meet up. Also those who realise that police either aren’t going to, or will have difficulty enforcing the 1-2hr limit.

11 cases / 6 local.

NSW absolute cases higher than VIC again. Local cases equal to VIC.

Good to see testing seems to be holding up

They are speeding through the regional VIC testing, results already coming out - literally turning around in hours.

Zero cases from Shepp so far which is great fingers crossed.

Will know more tomorrow. 350 test results so far (ie today's figures) in Shep Region.. Possibly thousands more results may be in by tomorrow's reports.

Having said that they have prioritised the more likely possible transmission contacts and so the more likely will have been within that 350.

Given the discussion not long ago by some on the issue of the (police) checking of people moving from Melbourne Metro to Regional Vic is that the one point to note from the Vic Presser today is that the Vic Gov has requested additional ADF personal to help assist for the current level of checking to be increased.

In explaining this Dan indicated that greater checking was required as they are looking to ease the restrictions further in Regional Victoria to be announced on Sunday and so increased checking is required to allow for a higher degree of relaxation.

So by inference one measure to remain in place from Sunday is no free travel between Melbourne Metro and and Vic Regional Victoria.

For Metro Melbourne the rumours are now that the 5km rule will as a minimum be increased to 20km, and may be greater or even not there at all (apart from no travel to Vic Regional) just depending on how case numbers go now leading up to Sunday.

Obviously the journos have heard the same rumours as that was a question put to Allen Cheng today: Allen Cheng did confirm in the presser today that they were examining the possibility of a 20km limit and that this was part of the modelling leading up to Sunday' restriction announcement.

Am I correct in saying that the possibility of Melbourne being allowed 20km only affects exercise and shopping?

Well it would depend on what all the new rules are.

However if applied to the current rules and the 20km replaces the 5km then there are a number of other things that the 5km applies to including currently permitted Social and Recreation activities.

However I think it is very likely now if new cases stay light till Sunday that there will be other restrictions eased and not just 5km changed to 20km.

A Third Step Light if you will.

From what Dan said at the presser today I doubt we will get in Metro Melbourne from the Step 3 Roadmap Intrastate travel: Allowed across Third Step area (can’t travel to areas with higher restrictions) .

It will be interesting to see if they bring in outdoor dining at cafes etc. This would be vital to many businesses and employees.

I assume too that they will endeavour to get more people back to work generally.

Today's Vic DHHS Report out.

My Comment: Once again the new cases are scattered across different suburbs which has been the recent pattern in Melbourne. The 15 Mystery Cases in the last 14 days have been scattered across 13 different suburbs. So while new cases are now quite low the spread of where they are occurring is probably a factor in Melbourne not fully moving to Step 3 from Sunday.

Part of the report is:
Victoria has recorded six new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 20,315.

The overall total has increased by four due to two cases being reclassified.

There have been no new deaths from COVID-19 reported since yesterday. To date, 816 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

Two of today’s six new cases are linked to known outbreaks and cases. These cases are linked to the Chadstone outbreak and a community outbreak in Elwood. Four cases are provisionally linked to known outbreaks and cases – two are being investigated for links to a case from the Box Hill Hospital outbreak, one is being investigated for links to a single case and one is being investigated for links to a previous case at Woolworths QV. That previous case most recently worked a nightshift while the store was closed to the public.

Of today’s six new cases, there are three in Whitehorse and single cases in Hume, Port Phillip and Glen Eira.

The average number of cases diagnosed in the last 14 days (1 Oct 2020 – 14 Oct 2020) for metropolitan Melbourne is 8.9 and regional Victoria is 0.6. The rolling daily average case number is calculated by averaging out the number of new cases over the past 14 days.

The total number of cases from an unknown source in the last 14 days (29 Sep 2020 – 12 Oct 2020) is 15 for metropolitan Melbourne and zero from regional Victoria. The 14-day period for the source of acquisition data ends 48 hours earlier than the 14-day period used to calculate the new case average due to the time required to fully investigate a case and assign its mode of acquisition.

The 15 mystery cases in the last 14 days (29 Sep 2020 – 12 Oct 2020) are located in the following postcodes, 3025 (two cases) 3027, 3019, 3147, 3184, 3015, 3073 (two cases), 3173, 3024, 3130, 3046, 3175 and 3037.

Any hope for further progress nationally delayed for another fortnight.

Tomorrow's National Cabinet meeting has been called off due to "technical problems" preventing Prime Minister Scott Morrison from returning to Sydney.

The meeting, which brings together the Premiers and Chief Ministers from all eight of Australia’s jurisdictions, was the first in four weeks.

The “technical problems” are reportedly to do with the PM’s RAAF plane.

I am sure he will blame the RAAF plane issues on Queensland too. Not buying it though, he could socially distance with AP in the same room and link in to the VC

I agree - If they really wanted to make it happen they could, so I suspect they are waiting to see what VIC says on Sunday and also WA is under alot of pressure now their CHO has said that it is not his medical advice that their borders remain closed to most of Australia. I suspect Scomo is going to watch that one unravel a bit more, now WA has said they will review all their border arrangements in two weeks time...

Almost certainly more than a fortnight. Do you think there's likely to be a national cabinet meeting in two weeks time, the day before the Qld election?
Yes, there should be...or put one on next week. There was one on 21 August before another similar event.

With respect to Territorians, probably not quite the same as a state election, not as important to either party - and the population of NT is about the same as that of the City of Greater Geelong.

But you could be right, I tend to be quite cynical about politics at the best of times. I hope I am proven wrong!
