Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

ABC just announced they have linked it to an overseas strain...

Genomic testing has revealed the Northern Beaches outbreak is an international strain of COVID-19 but authorities still do not know how it got into the community.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the latest number of cases would be announced by 11:00am AEDT.

But does the driver have the same strain?

I’m really hoping that SA at least looks at this sensibly and if restrictions are required we don’t blanket the whole state.

The Queensland border rules are very weak:
  • Anyone who was in the Northern Beaches region on or since Friday 11 December 2020 and is already in Queensland should get tested and quarantine in their home or accommodation for 14 days from the date they left the Northern Beaches.
  • Anyone who was in the Northern Beaches region on or since Friday 11 December 2020 and arrives in Queensland on a flight from Sydney after midnight tonight (Thursday 17 December 2020), must get tested and quarantine in their home or accommodation for 14 days from the date they left the Northern Beaches.
  • Anyone who was in the Northern Beaches region on or since Friday 11 December 2020 and arrives in Queensland on a flight from Sydney after 1am on Saturday 19 December 2020 must go into hotel quarantine at their own expense for 14 days from the date they left the Northern Beaches, and get tested.

If you were in Queensland before last night, quarantine is requested but not mandatory (should vice must)
if you arrive in Queensland today via a flight from Sydney, home quarantine is mandatory
if you arrive in Queensland tomorrow and beyond, via a flight from Sydney, self funded hotel quarantine is mandatory.

if you drive to Queensland or fly from another city - eg Newcastle or Canberra, according to this, there is no mandatory quarantine. I assume this is because they don’t want to reinstate full border controls so will only monitor direct flights from Sydney.

I doubt its linked directly to the driver, as no obvious overlap in movement. But as i stated yesterday would not surprise me at all if flight crew have been staying on northern beaches, or someone working where they are staying hws been exposed.

When cleaner was announced on 3rd journalist investigations at the non quarantine hotel she worked at next door to Novotel stated some US crew werent staying inside their rooms as required. They had been spotted in bar and gym i think.

Time for air crew to be placed in supervised quarantine hotels and subject to test on arrival.

Apparently many cases identified overnight which is hopefully a sign the northern beaches community has taken it seriously and they can jump on them quickly.

Only thing being reported in the media is border closures 🙄.

I just realised 14 day quarantine since last day on Northern Beaches (from 11/12) means miserable isolated Christmas for some......sigh

Drive to Newcastle and fly from there. Quarantine only applies on flights from Sydney.

In the EU it seems positive cases and contacts only isolate for a week.

When we were prevented from leaving the house last month it was shower in morning or evening or even 😈 both times.

7 days seem fine in most cases but 14 days will catch most of the outliers, they have had people test positive outside of 7 days, but then they have had 1 or two outside of 14. I think our medicos have gone for the safe option, which might explain why we have almost no cases while EU is a basket case.

Yes. Conservative in many ways but leave open opportunities in other situations. And then there are those states that want 28 days clear.
