Swan calls for mandatory masks, lockdown of Sydney metro, says WA contact tracing simply not up to task

Dr Norman Swan has told RN Breakfast there is no question NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian should put Sydney into lockdown and make masks mandatory.

“Christmas will be a superspreading event in Sydney if we don’t get this under control.

Asked on RN Breakfast whether state premiers have made the right decisions around border restrictions, Dr Swan said: "If I was them, I would've made exactly that call”

"Mark McGowan is twitchy because I suspect that West Australian contact tracing is not up to an outbreak at this point”

And Adelaide Airport a mess now as people leaving Adelaide to return to Sydney didn't hear the commissioner this morning and are asking police. Some are saying they can stay, some are saying they have to quarantine. People who know they can stay are trying to get their luggage off. Others have boarded not knowing they could stay. Awful for them. Everyone who stays though must get tested three times.

The bolded bit is rubbish.
Quarantine leaks have happened everywhere except those that have not taken OS arrivals until recently.
Note NSW has taken just over 50% of OS arrivals but 45% of cases of OS origin. So how is the problem of their making?

I suggest that as a Queenslander you should be more afraid of your government's mistake.A QLD public hospital turning away the woman from the northern beaches because she arrived just after 4.30pm but with symptoms.Just luck that that didn't turn into a cluster on the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane.
🤣 A classic "look over there" ? Just because there have been mistakes made in all States doesn't absolve NSW from owning its own ones.

But SYD is the hub of air freight in Australia with nearly 50% of Australia’s total. MEL is a very distant second on about half of what goes through SYD

I was talking total freight and logistics where VIC is much bigger but anyway way off topic!

10 months on and no up to it, so he says.

Let's assume he's correct....oh dear. Better keep that border shut to ensure that re-election in March :)

This has been well known for a while... and a disgrace because if a Sydney happened in Perth their population would be at severe risk.

I just don’t get why they aren’t pulling the trigger on masks in Sydney. The bus union has come out and said do it after reports people still not wearing masks on PT!

More speculation from Hazzard that patient zero could be a traveller from Los Angeles on 1 December - not a HQ breach, could have been luggage.

ABC is reporting that Victorians will not have to do double quarantine after arriving in Sydney from overseas. Special procedures will be put in place to transfer them directly to the airport.
Good news. What about residents of WA, SA, NT, QLD, etc?

But you haven't said what was NSW's mistake.A Quarantine breach is not necessarily a mistake.Governments really shouldn't be responsible for some peoples stupidity and selfishness. At this time there is no evidence of a mistake.

But the QLD was a definite inexcusable mistake. The problem is it has happened before so should not have happened again.

Not that great news...new cases spawning at different sites - Rose of Australia, Turramurra Salon - it means the residence of some cases are now outside the Northern Beaches

No cases outside Northern Beaches.
Some venues outside the northern beaches have been flagged as close (requiring 14 day quarantine and testing) and potential contacts.

Note also today is 15 cases out of 38,578 tests.
That's under 0.04% or 1 in 2500

Edit: Does appear that a few sites outside of NSW have had transmission - CBD workplace (1), Hair salon in Turramurra (5), Pub in Erskenville (2+).
But all connected to Beaches cluster

Out of 38,000 tests. That has got to be a record? This almost seems like it’s going “China style” and testing the entire population. I wouldn’t be surprised if everybody on the Northern Beaches has been tested by Xmas.

This will be the big difference between this and the crossroads issue. Virtually all of the impacted sites this time are in wealthy, educated areas where people clearly are complying. Crossroads was almost the exact opposite.

Sydney - city of villages. Really shines through sometimes
