And by cancelling - worse damage. Any positive teams or tourists will now spend more time in Melbourne city
Surely they must cancel the first few rounds of AFL as well.

Don’t know about other clubs but as Essendon members our CEO emailed us a message and it sounded very much like he thinks there could be games played behind closed doors.
I mentioned on another thread earlier today that I’ve heard from a couple of people that the AFL is seriously looking at suspending the first 5 rounds and playing a 17 game season

The 17 game season is eminently sensible and would avoid the chaos of having one - or two teams having to forfeit, spend 2 weeks out of the game and then mess with the draw. Could almost get the situation under some kind of control.

What's changed within 5 weeks though unless you go to a China style shutdown (and even then I don't believe the reporting).

Pointless just shutting down big events unless you also shut down every social gathering - every shop, restaurant, school, office etc

No, the useless VIC gov would rather scare the population by threatening to close schools.
Not scaring but practical - closing these petri dishes will slow the inevitable spread of Covid-19, enabling hospitals to have more of a chance to treat the influx of serious cases.

It very much looks like it worked in China .... and now the Italians are attempting a carbon copy. It's never too late.... unless your Gov is totally useless and allows it to be so.

Our EFC membership is $315 per month for our family: I wonder what compensation might need to be offered to us members if games are played to empty stadiums (stadia?)

"pointless shutting down big events"???

The writing has been on the wall, in capitals, for weeks now.

Yep, all sensible ... but bugger it, lets go and host an F1 event. Incompetence and cowardice on a grand scale.

The published figures at least support this.

But their alleged success will last how long? How long can they stay locked down and without industry? Or do they think that they will completely eradicate the virus?

Yes, remains to be seen. Taking their numbers on face value - they did the business. Time will tell.

But if you look at FR24 China isn't shut down outside Wuhan. Heaps of planes still flying, high speed trains running. Factories reports back in production.

I think if the AFL calls it off we would be able to be compensated but if government calls it off then it’s bad luck and would be up to individual clubs to decide if any compensation is handed out
