In some states, however walk-ins are not a thing in NSW, you need bookings at state run hubs or GP. AZ is not recommended for under 60s, yes you can go to a GP and ask for it, but why would you if eligible for Pfizer which gets you fully vaccinated much faster?

Yes you do still need to make a booking here but for many clinics, you can make that booking online for an appointment the same day. So whilst you can't just "walk in" and get the jab, you can still get it same-day for AstraZeneca. So really, NSW Health is offering same-day Prime delivery of AstraZeneca jabs whilst you have to wait weeks with second class international mail to get your Pfizer dose.

In terms of vaccination speed, I would argue AstraZeneca is faster. You can get your first dose right away and get some protection for this latest outbreak, and wait the 8 weeks or so to get your second dose to receive the full suite of protection. With Pfizer, who knows when you'll get your first dose, could be next week, could be next month depending on where you book and vaccine supply availability. Perhaps you could get fully vaccinated faster than AstraZeneca but again, that's assuming all the stars align in your favour. Say what you will about AstraZeneca, but at least you know you'll get some protection right away.

My brother and SIL in SA have not seen their son, DIL and three grandchildren for almost three years as they live in remote WA. Then Covid. They were due to fly to Broome to see them this week. I’ve stayed away from them as husband returned from Sydney but the week before.

Time the medical community (especially ATAGI), governments and the public woke up to this unavoidable fact. Especially in the context of the spread of the virus, wherever it started from (multiple sources it sounds like)

There's no wondering in NSW. If you want Pfizer you can book online today and you will have both of your appointments secured. Last I checked the first appointments are in the first week of August, so you'd have your second by the end of August or very early September.

Exactly, there is a several wait at Olympic Park for Pfizer but if you choose some of the hospitals you can get in much faster - within a week at RPA, St Vincents and fastest is St George. The fed site tells you when next appointment is available before you start the booking process.

With current arrangements in NSW where 2nd dose is booked at same time, you will always be fully vaccinated with Pfizer within 3 weeks of first dose and the wait for Pfizer is less than 9 weeks anywhere (as short as 2 days in some venues) so you will be fully vaccinated faster than if you get AZ today.

But if some 40-50s choose AZ and have a much a lsower journey to full protection, then that leaves more Pfizer for those who want the faster path to full protection.

That's it, New South Wales needs shut down our border with Queensland, the risk of disease transmission is far too high, to say nothing of another OzFest being held in Brisbane (the only thing worse would be holding it in Canberra, a city whose main attraction is a large administrative building).

Joking aside, why on earth are they revealing the identity of this case. I can understand wanting to identify the case location and date but doesn't revealing such information run afoul of privacy laws?

I mean from a risk standpoint they're about the same. Both sets of travellers are coming from areas where there is widespread community transmission of COVID.

Meanwhile, for AstraZeneca it's a whole other story. If you're willing to get the jab, you can walk up today and get one. I'm still dismayed that the government has done everything in its power to downplay the importance of AstraZeneca, to the point of saying only the elderly who should be put on an ice floe and sent to Antarctica should get it.

You're absolutely right, having never been to Canberra (and hopefully never having to go there), I can certainly understand the appeal of wanting to get away from the dull dreary landscape that is the greater Canberra area and visit more hospitable climes like Sydney or Melbourne. Heck, I suppose many Canberrans would even stoop to visiting Perth for a week. Anything to avoid having to stare at Parliament House for a week will do!


Respectfully disagree with your assessment. Canberra tourism has taken a beating since Parliament House was there, arguably the only attraction most Australians can think of when having to name something...anything in Canberra! Canberra the only city that makes Perth look good

Technically they don't have cases of Corona, since that would imply their figures would be in multiples of 24! From what I'm reading they just have a single Corona. As a Sydneysider who is living through literal cases of Corona right now, let's hope it stays that way!

Only one of the 26 state run sites has a wait list that long and that is the very popular Olympic Park. Can get in at many of the hospitals this week, plus there are commwealth run sites too. Encouraging people to disregard health advice and go for AZ due to wait times that dont exist in most venues isnt necessary.

ATAGI did state that their advice re AZ may change. I presumed at the time that this kind of situation may be a reason. Just get vaccinated with whatever you can as soon as you can.
