Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

For Victoria, I don't know whether the DHHS essential worker list applies at the moment and whether there are any other versions in existence, but a version I read said dentists could only conduct dental services to treat facial swelling, facial trauma and severe unrelenting pain.

A Victorian dental association says:

Dental restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne

The lockdown for metropolitan Melbourne was extended until midnight Thursday 2 September 2021.

A curfew operates from 9pm to 5am every night. Permits will be required to leave the house for authorised work, consistent with the arrangements that were in place last year. Authorised workers will be required to carry permits when working and when travelling for work from 11:59pm Tuesday 17 August. The permit needs to be certified by an employer. Permits are available from the coronavirus website.

Dental practitioners in metropolitan Melbourne are still only permitted to provide dental services for the management of patients with urgent needs or care where failure to do so in a clinically appropriate timeframe will lead to adverse outcomes. These restrictions are part of the Restricted Activity Directions issued by the Victorian Government under the authority of the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 (Vic) and are legally binding. Penalties apply for failure to comply with these restrictions.

Restrictions on dental services are designed to balance the need to access necessary dental care with the reduction of movement of people in the community. This should guide clinical decision making. Clinicians should take a risk-based approach during this period. There is more information here to provide guidance. The ADAVB won’t provide specific advice on what treatment can or cannot be provided – dentists must exercise their clinical judgement to determine whether a delay in care will lead to adverse outcomes.

For NSW, the authorised worker list is vague on dental. Dental is not specifically mentioned in the list. Only healthcare and social services is the closest relevant broad category. You need a lawyer or industry association to find out if dental is a health or medical service as defined by a specific State legislation that more generally applies to public hospitals. While the authorised worker list only applies to residents of LGAs of concern, a person could only safely said everything in that industry is open if the authorised worker list applied to that category.

Interestingly, a NSW dental association says (their bolding):

Updated advice from the Dental Council of NSW

As of Thursday 12 August, the Dental Council of NSW released advice for all dental practitioners in NSW regarding the regulatory requirements for limiting dental practise during this current outbreak.

In accordance with this advice, all NSW dental practitioners should take a risk-based approach to deferring dental care with a view to reducing movement of people in the community. During this time, dental practitioners must exercise their clinical judgement to determine whether a delay in dental care would lead to adverse patient outcomes.

All dental practitioners across NSW at the moment are limited to the provision of either essential or urgent/emergency dental care only. The reason for this dental care should be clearly documented in the patient record.

Practitioners outside the 12 LGAs of concern in NSW are limited to the provision of essential dental care.

Practitioners within the 12 LGAs of concern in Greater Sydney are limited to the provision of urgent/emergency dental care only.

*The 12 LGAs of concern include Bayside, Blacktown, Burwood, Campbelltown, Canterbury-Bankstown, coughberland, Fairfield, Georges River, Liverpool, Parramatta, Strathfield, and 12 suburbs of Penrith.
The Vic Gov website specifies that, during the current lockdown, “authorised providers” in dental services covers only:
“dental services undertaken by oral health professionals in the management of patients with urgent needs or care where failure to do so in a clinically appropriate timeframe will lead to adverse outcomes“.

Friend of mine has a wisdom tooth issue that needs to be extracted in Melb. Cannot be done under lockdown. On and off antibiotics, only choice is a dental surgeon who may be able to within the rules - but $$$

In NSW some dentists are open i know people who have had a root canal & crown or fillings or braces removed since lockdown began. Outside of LGAs of concern, essential (not just emmergency) consults can occur - the dentist defines what is essential.

At the practice i go to in the cbd only hygenist appointments are on hold unless you live in an LGA of concern, in which case referrals to a dentist in those areas is provided. All the staff were already fully vaccinated when i went for my last check up in May, as they qualified under 1B.

Most practices have dental surgeons on staff. Even if doing wisdom tooth extraction in chairs (rather than under GA in hospital), you would be using a dental surgeon as if impacted they may need to cut gums, and do need to administer stitches.

"Severe mouth pain that keeps you awake" qualifies as a dental emmergency according to the royal dental hospital in Melbourne, so your friend is eligible for treatment during covid.

My 80 year old Mum had to have a tooth extracted during the Melbourne lockdown last year. She had to have it done by an Oral Surgeon. Interestingly enough she needed 2 small fillings done this lockdown and it was no problem doing them at the Dentist

NSW return to school plan to be announced today

Guess: vaccinated HSC can return to practicals 13/9 to end of term 3, primary return in term 4, vaccinated and unvaccinated HSC sit exams, after HSC ends, rest of high school returns. Teachers across State now formally added to prioritisation for vaccines, HSC students across State now formally added to prioritisation.

Didn't know there was any restrictions in seeing a dentist in Sydney...saw mine yesterday

I did two days ago… to their credit, they did say they’re not taking bookings for cleans/checkups (I had to get a crown reattached). They did, however, do my clean given I was there anyway. I guess if one were desperate for a clean, you could break something.

Dentists decide what is essential, so can decide who to see, your dentist obviously assessed risk and decided it was ok to continue to operate, nothing unlawful about that.

The Wharparilla Lodge aged care home in Echuca is in lockdown after a worker tested positive.

Vaccination Evidence, yes i understand the missing part here is a two-three week lag of current cases that may have fatalities, but really the difference with the aged population having a high vaccination coverage is undeniably good.

Yes it is.

All deaths in this current NSW outbreak have been in those not fully vaccinated except two (both very elderly with serious co-morbities). All but 5 have been in people eligible for vaccination for months, so entirely preventable. If those eligible had got vaccinated promptly the number of deaths would only be 7 (less if you ignore those who were in palliative care for other conditions or died from meningitis with covid)

Just because someone is old is not proof that they were eligible for vaccination.Chronic diseases are much more common in the elderly.Cancer is very common. They may be getting chemotherapy and their oncologist has recommended they not get vaccinated or wait until the evidence was clearer with vaccine safety with cancer and chemotherapy.

These people are often highlighted as being unvaccinated in press conferences, you would imagine there would have been some pushback if your loved one passes away and is touted as "unvaccinated" if they had been advised by a doctor to not get vaccinated ... you would think a journo would have been told if that were the case and guarenteed they would have used that stick to beat people over the head.

Why.A person's medical records are private and should not be used in a press conference.
Right, but if the family members of people who had passed wished to contact a journalist and say "they said my xx_xx_ was unvaccinated ... but this was only due to advice they received ..." you really think a journo wouldnt be able to turn that into a question to make a member of the press conference squirm?
