Australian state border restrictions

He will have to deal with his own residents or they might prove him wrong and get to 90!
I don't think the residents by & large care. There is no urgency to get vaccinated, at all. It is a sorry state of affairs but the government would be happy to see little urgency, as it gives them more time to complete the roll out & fix their disastrous hospital system.

Mentally preparing for Victoria to transition to "extreme risk" within the fortnight. It beggars belief that a government has the power to stop people being by the side of loved ones before they pass or attend their funerals. Astounding. My heart goes out to anyone in NSW who has been vaccinated and willing to quarantine in WA but cannot and misses out on events of this magnitude.

Not everyone can deal with being locked up for two weeks. This is Australia, everybody.

They showed that last night. Apparently the bloke has anger issues and lost it when they told him he was due to get out of quarantine at midnight that night rather than midday as he believed.
Think he may be now serving some time in another type of government quarantine

That'll do him wonders.

I have seen numerous instances of this type of behavior in a work capacity and none of it was due to being quarantined.

As have I (obviously in a non medical setting) however it doesn't detract from the challenges of quarantine. These people were from 600km away, not Chicago.

Oh agree I’m not at all negating the effects on people of quarantine.
There are people who react way beyond what one would typically see in anger regardless of the situation.
This video seems to show an example of that.
Nothing excuses that behavior IMHO despite what sympathies I may have for the circumstances that are alleged in the video.

We can’t blame WA residents lack of urgency, the delivery system is a huge issue in WA as well and is all on WA Health.

We are working with primary care there and they are furious about the lack of action to drive vaccination from WA Health - most pointing to the fact WA Health is quite literally falling apart in front of our eyes even with zero covid patients, they can’t even run the hospitals now let alone mount an efficient vaccination program.

WA desperately needs help.

Hence the increasingly strict measures on travel to WA.....Must keep it out at all costs, especially if the population thinks you're doing a marvellous job.

I just heard that our Prime minister "had" to fly to Sydney on the weekend in the VIP jet for a meeting (that was canceled). No quarantining and then posts pictures of he and his family together for father's day.
Not a good look when so many others could not see there fathers who were only in the next LGA but more than 5k away. Or on the Tweed border or anywhere else in lockdown.
So out of touch with the everyday people.

Most people vote on impressions and the occasional people I communicate with in WA are under the impression that the entire eastern half of Australia is falling apart and they are living in the last bastion of safety. I encounter surprise that I'm allowed out of the house, let alone that I can travel.
If I said that I was falling over dead bodies in the street, it'd probably be accepted!
The first stage of gaining help is admitting a problem and the majority in WA do not see a problem.

The 'çancelled' meeting is a well-known political trick. Abbott, Bronwyn Bishop and Susan Ley all got caught out doing this in order to attend to private business. It is one of the ways politicians distinguish themselves from us, the hoi polloi.

For people who don't see any cost to closed borders (all family and friends are in WA, no need to travel for work, etc) then life being 'normal' is seen as a preferred alternative to masks, restrictions, toilet paper shortages and a small but real risk of grandma and grandpa dying.

The 'costs' of border closures - economic, mental health, otherwise - are too far outside of most peoples' direct sphere of observation or influence to make them act.

The terrible case of a girl dying in the childrens' hospital waiting room shone some light on this (I am surprised Roger Cook managed to keep his job). Ambulance ramping hits the front page from time to time as well - but again, because the numbers of people impacted are low - and it's outside of most peoples' observation and influence - it doesn't reach a tipping point of causing a public outcry.

It's much easier to throw stones.

Every couple of weeks or so the local rag shine a light on it, this is today's front page

This article was discussed on the Front Page (the video below has been set to start at the relevant point towards the end of the clip)

'Internal documents have revealed just how short staffed WA's health system really is... a "desperate need" in ICU'

WA is hopelessly unprepared for a major COVID outbreak despite having 18 months to prepare for one. This has to be a major part of why Labor in WA is keeping their borders shut.

I completely agree. Everything else is smoke & mirrors to distract from the sad reality.

As I said elsewhere, if you're not affected, you're not affected, and that is most people.

And if you are, it's somehow the fault of the bad people over east.

That makes me so angry, we haven't seen my dad since Master TC was three days old, and bub hasn't even met his other grandpa.

Yes it's appalling behavior for a PM, especially given the criticisms from various federal politicians on the border closures in Qld and WA. . He's supposed to be leading the nation not taking advantage of the privilege. Bad decision bad ethics and bad publicity and bad form.
