Australian state border restrictions

And the QLD Home Quarantine is not exactly going gangbusters.Only 407 people out of 1000 places.2000 were invited to apply and over 8000 border exemption request outstanding.

Well the conditions on it were just totally ridiculously onerous.

Feeling incensed today that ACT CM is again banging on about not fully opening for ACT residents to go anywhere other than border bubble until 99% vax rate achieved (yes really) - so I did my first civil disobedience almost 2 months ahead of my self allocated deadline of 1 January. I'm such a rule breaker 😆 😆 - I "forgot" to check in at my local supermarket today. I also noticed that I was not alone in that approach.

They do realise that the numbers aren’t that accurate enough to even measure to get to 99% anyway. Honestly the brain cells I lose with these brain dead state politicians can’t wait to never hear from them ALL again :)

I have family in Queensland that I do want to see, but on principle I won't be going to Queensland any time soon. All of them can travel here when able, except possibly my 90 yr old father-in-law. I guess I will have to make an exception and go see him sometime, but it certainly won;t be soon after the shameful behaviour of the Queensland government.

I share your frustration with the Queensland Government, but I don't think it's fair to take it out on the people of Queensland.

I'm certainly not going to punish my family for it.

Family is a different concern. I have no desire to support the policies of the WA government by spending money there (sorry to the people - but the vast majority voted for it). However my entire family and friend base is there so I will still go there.

Fly in your own groceries and provisions... /s

After being the only Mexican in the family for over 40 years now, I have a lot of "insider" experience of the people of Queensland. Pretty much, they hate tourists, even including some who have tourism businesses. It's a very weird pass-agg vibe.

I've been up twice in 2021 to see the family, and the vast bulk of the populace that I encountered in the Gold Coast area were very negative towards "southerners". I'm not going to spend my money or my time going where I am not welcome, unless absolutely necessary. See family - will have to. Holiday, no way. Work, not going there anymore - a luxury I have of being COVID-retired, so I will now decide how and where I return to work to pay for the additional overseas breaks I will now be taking. FWIW, I feel the same way about WA. Disproportionate, parochial behaviour needs to be met with a sledgehammer because they simply don't appear to care about or understand anything less.

YMMV.

Yep. It’s a very odd place. I lived there for a number of years and was prepared to accept I’d always be an “outsider”, but the genuine hostility received from a huge portion of the population (boomers and above in particular) was quite shocking. Add on a long surname and it wasn’t a pleasant experience.

I distinctly remember filling a script in a pharmac_ once and the older lady (who’d been pleasant thus far) read it, had a weird look appear and said “where’s Drummoyne?”. When I said Sydney you could just about feel the thickness in the air push against you 🙄

Going to take something stronger than a sledgehammer to get the WA border open (and most of the populace seems happy with that)

I think that attitude has been on the slide for the last 30 years, and I never really noticed it. A large slice of the population hail from elsewhere, particularly NSW, particularly on the urban margins where I spent a lot of that time.

Understand the feeling though. I am also oddly unenthused about visiting WA. Just crossing the border into NSW seems quite exotic now.

Yep and I am definitely a boomer. And if you think it's bad to say you are from Sydney, you ought to see the sneers when you say you are from Canberra!!

Please don’t hang us out to dry because of 3 or 4 of our ‘leaders’ with a collective IQ less than my shoe size. I can say with 100% certainty, any people involved with our tourism industry, directly, up or down stream are aghast at the way things have played out and will be over-welcoming to compensate!!

We will be open before Christmas, easily. The movement up here is really strong now to get rid of the state border restrictions.

Just listen to the language now being used in our press conferences…

If they open before 11 November 2021 (date of my flight), I'll come.

I didn't really encounter much of the hostility when I was holidaying in Qld, both Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Hamilton Island, even for an Asian. Maybe I didn't care.

I worked in FNQ many years ago and you weren't considered a local unless your grandparents were buried in the local cemetary.

I've long said that I'm from Australia. And when people say, "but where", I simply repeat Australia.
It helps to have lived in every state and territory: I can assure you that the S and T's are as near as possible irrelevant. They do stupid things to try to make themselves relevant...

Qld is already replete with escaped Mexicans and it is indeed a common line of reasoning that we have enough.
Tourism needs chaff and to that extent even mexicans are made welcome as grist for the mill….. bring your money...
After that I guess we won't lose a lot of sleep about wingers who don't like the Qld vibe..

Chuckle. But which part of Queensland are you talking about? FNQ (the real Queensland), or the hanger-ons down 'south'. When I was running national associations, the people in Cairns/Townsville/Emerald preferred to deal with me in the national HQ as they hated Canberra less than they hated Brisbane.
