Australian state border restrictions

you think if we used the term Vic had 1600 positive test results today it would lighten the thought process??? or have any effect whatsoever?

don't matter what term we use, we all know what the number represents.

The rhetoric needs to change. And I’ll give the NSW premier points for pushing that.

Realistically, we just need to stop testing. If someone presents to hospital, test and treat. Otherwise, it’s a waste of time and resources.

Agree, but even UK still reporting cases...
78k cases today (I think).

Same everywhere.

ah ok fair enough. Makes sense.

But how is McGowan going to manage the high number of cases, you think the number will be sort of sidelined & deaths or even hospitalizations / ICU's will be major focus?

I find it difficult to see how coming from keeping covid out completely, claiming safest place on earth, then allowing hundreds of cases & deaths in will be acceptable, Will the border not be closed again after Feb 5 or even be delayed when NSW & VIC start having anywhere near the reported possible 25k daily cases??

I don't see WA accepting covid & deaths. QLD & SA having early issues with it so far & WA in another league of safety.
No state or country should "accept deaths" they way you are saying, although deaths were part of the pandemic. Yes, COVID will come to Western Australia, we will wear masks, positive cases will initially keep increasing, and some vaccinated people will become ill. I certainly do not expect there will be masses of "deaths coming in"! Not even sure what you mean by that?

Certainly don't mean masses of death.

Just interesting how it'll unfold, that's all.

Indeed and in many ways human health is a convenient term for state economy. WAs opening will depend on what happens in other states by Feb 5. Not so much in cases / hospitilasations but level of economic / social restrictions. If there is a need for lockdowns or even heavy restrictions i think border opening will be postponed.

I agree. I think the narrative is changing and only an overwhelming number of hospitalisations / deaths would cause that date to change at this stage. A lot of what is being said now is simply doubling down on things said earlier.

The one wildcard would be if we see many young children hospitalised or worse. I believe the community would not accept that, and restrictions would follow.

Although the BBL teams seem to be able to move freely between states, including WA
There's some quarantine bubble thing going on.....
Burst already...

“the Big Bash League said it had to make the decision to move the upcoming games because from Saturday, both New South Wales and Victoria will be classified 'extreme risk' by WA.

It said the games would not have been possible because all teams would have travelled through either New South Wales or Victoria in the 14 days before their games in Perth.”

I think the whole check-in system needs a rethink. Many people want to check-in so that they have a peace of mind that they haven't been exposed to COVID. But then enforcing all these constraints on us the moment we are in the same building as someone who has COVID is insane. And look I've received Casual Contact warnings on the ServiceNSW app a while ago. I monitored for systems, and did an at home test which thankfully came back negative. The whole point of check-ins is to provide a warning that you can use to raise your guard above and beyond the normal level. It means for people like me who are immunocompromised, that we have everything at the ready should we do end up testing positive. It doesn't mean we get locked in our rooms because we passed by someone who had the 'Rona.

You're quite right on that front. The whole purpose of the vaccine wasn't to prevent you from getting the sniffles, it was to prevent us from getting hospitalized and overwhelming the healthcare system. And to this day be it the Omicron, Delta, Xi or whatever variant comes around, there has not been much of a dip in the efficacy against hospitalization and death. This only reinforces why it's so important people get vaccinated, and why the shift needs to go there. The second the government starts changing the rules and not following the plan is the moment the public loses faith in what they do and say. Why would anyone go out and get vaccinated if your vaccine status means nothing?

Western Australia is free to set whatever travel rules they want. But they shouldn't be surprised if fellow Aussies are left with a bad taste in their mouth from this whole incident and decide further down the road to visit Melbourne, Brisbane and other more beautiful and frankly accessible parts of the country before setting foot in Perth. And by keeping the state closed, the Prime Minister of WA is undermining the national plan for dealing with COVID. He is using these border closures as a crutch as to why people in WA aren't getting vaccinated. After all, if you can keep COVID out of your community, what's the point in getting vaccinated? At some point, WA will learn just as NSW did that you can't keep COVID out forever. At some point a cab driver, footballer or someone else will end up spreading it around. And if your populace aren't vaccinated, good luck!

As a Tasmanian, I regard it as a badge of honour to be locked out of WA!

Speaking of, I better check my passport. Does WA still accept Australian passports with just 6 months of validity remaining? Also do they do visa on arrival or do I need to go to a Western Australia embassy? 🤔

Again tough poo for WA but again I feel desperately sorry for those WA residents income and livelihood being slammed from this ridiculous and ongoing behaviour from their state government.

Based on your obviously deep knowledge of this, would you like to elaborate on exactly which group of WA residents "income and livelihood are being slammed"?

Is it those in tourism-related industries, I wonder. I think everyone else is doing just fine. Sad, but in the broader view of things, not the end of the world.

We have 3 containers of product arriving Jan 4, 5 and 6 which have been delayed in transit literally for months - 578 electric bicycles and tricycles in total with over 450 already committed to retailers - risk
I suspect you know the answer - in my opinion if you must be there for the container then don't go.

It has taken the announcement of a date for the border to open to cause a rush to immunise. That is good, of course, but I still don’t understand why someone would wait until now when they want to visit rellies in Melbourne in January or because a nephew has an autoimmune disease? Anyway, on track for 90%.

Just landed in SYD on Scoot from Amsterdam, Singapore.
Took me just 5 minutes to to get taxi to hotel.
All they did is gave everyone a paper with NSW requirement to self isolate for 3 days.
But what if I fly to BNE tomorrow? And have to stay 14 days at home any way?
Confused....🤪

Yep decision made to cancel within last hour - flts were / are a consideration - but news of Aust Cricket Captains predicament in ADL last night casts another long shadow over the risk in QLD - wotif…………. - 14 days? Nope - risk however remote is just too great - and I am the tiniest worry wart on the planet - so plenty top shelf Champs / Reds on offer in Parkdale over festive season if you dudes wanna wander up?

Cannot understand for the life of me why WA Leadership didn't provide a date months ago. You need the stick to motivate people. Smart in some ways, dumb as a post in others.
