Australian state border restrictions

OMG people on Anna's FB freaking out over "cases" which have resulted in very very few ICU and even less deaths..... and probably most of those unvaxxed or comorbidities. Does anyone think she will cave and close the borders? Honestly, if I wasn't traveling next month and have to return a negative test, I wouldn't be the least bit worried if I actually got the bloody virus! Thankfully the new CHO is level-headed and logical! But I do agree they should have stocked up on more RATs.

The CHO is excellent and had a good message this morning. Just hope AP listens to him.

What will closing the borders achieve? They have significant (5K/day) and escalating community transmission - a large amount going untested or not counted in the official statistics due to lack of PCR access and even more due to lack of RAT as a diagnostic tool.

The best thing for open borders and borders staying open is widespread community transmission on both sides of that border.

The freaking out is as a result of the conditioning of the public. We haven't seen anything yet, just wait for WA.

Reading social media really does give you a good idea as to the hysteria of the masses. They’re not entirely to blame, the politicians caused this and the media fueled it. “Close the borders!!!”. It’s scary that so many people can’t understand what a fruitless exercise that would be.

It’s times like this I dislike democracy. But I guess it’s the least worst system we have.

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail
When you won the last election on the pitch of "Keeping Queenslanders Safe" - seeing case numbers in the thousands per day - indeed in one day more cases than you've had the entire pandemic and then some - it's going to be a tough sell.

I do note that the premier is distancing herself from the case numbers to some extent, with the last case number retweet being 30 December.

I wish they would do a better job of selling it to the masses. Are people in other countries begging for their borders to be shut? UK, USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Germany, etc? Anna is a pollie, does she really listen to fruitcakes on social media? They are probably a small minority but they sure are "noisy". The last thing in the world I want is more restrictions. The govt kept us safe (at draconian measures) until they got the weapons for individuals to protect themselves. Vaccines, treatments, masks, hopefully soon RATs will be more easily available. I don't know about diseases. I do know that bird species are often split from the original and made a new species if there are enough differences. It would be nice if Delta was the end of Covid proper vanquished by the mild Omicron and stop labeling Omicron as Covid19. And stop calling positive tests "cases". It should only be a case if it ends up in hospital. Didn't people use die from the flu and common colds many years ago until we learned how to treat them? Omicron should be in this normalized category. No one freaks out of the spread of colds and the flu. But people do die from these.

It wasn’t a tool used for division in other countries, so no.

I clearly remember driving around northern Brisbane in about March last year when there were still election billboards up. There was one that just said in giant letters “xx_ - the number of time Deb Freckles asked for the border to be opened”.

It plays to a narrative that suited the powers that be at the time. Sadly, it’s brought out the worst of Australian culture. I still maintain my position that this country will never recover from this.

Tasmania is scrapping the requirement for seven days quarantine for international arrivals. Now going to be the same as domestic.

Does that just leave Queensland now? I’ve got friends on the way back from Europe now. Land in Sydney then a domestic up to Brisbane to enter 14 days quarantine 🙄. I’ve told them to lick every tile at LHR, as it’s only 7 days if they catch it.

I expect the same here in WA, we've had others sharing bad news the last couple of days, Roger Cook fronting as we speak.

Even though I was at home throughout this pandemic, I don't think I will ever get over how the country fell apart into bickering states. I never even heard the term "Queenslander" used much except for State of Origin and a type of house. I always identified as an Australian and here was the Aussie passport being virtually worthless. People stranded for months on end, I can't imagine what that was like. AFAIK Americans were Americans, not Caifornians, Texans, Oklahomans, etc. Canadians not British Columbians, Albertans. I can't think of any country that was more divided than Australia.

I don't know if Australia will ever feel like a united country again.
